At least 260 people have been killed and 60 injured in an oil pipeline blast in Nigeria's commercial capital, Lagos, Nigerian Red Cross (NRC) officials say.

Officials say they are still counting bodies and it is feared the death toll could be much higher.

The blast in the Abule Egba area happened as hundreds of people were scooping fuel from a pipeline punctured by thieves, officials said.

Some 2,000 people have died in similar incidents in the past decade.

Bodies 'scattered'

NRC officials said they had counted 260 dead so far, adding that efforts to recover the bodies were being hampered by the intense heat.

NIGERIA PIPELINE DISASTERS
May 2006: At least 150 killed in Lagos
Dec 2004: At least 20 killed in Lagos
Sept 2004: At least 60 killed in Lagos
June 2003: At least 105 killed in Abia State
Jul 2000: At least 300 killed in Warri
Mar 2000: At least 50 killed in Abia State
Oct 1998: At least 1,000 killed in Jesse

"We can only recognise them through the skulls, the bodies are scattered over the ground," NRC's Ige Oladimeji was quoted by the Associated Press as saying.

Akintunde Akinkleye, a Reuters news agency photographer at the scene, said he had counted about 500 bodies.

NRC secretary general, Abiodum Orebiyi, told the BBC that a number of houses had been destroyed, along with a mosque and a church.

He said the blaze had now been brought under control.

Some of those injured in the blast are believed to have gone into hiding to avoid arrest. Others may not have gone to hospital because they lack money to pay for treatment.

Lagos journalist Adeyinka Adewunmi witnessed the aftermath of the explosion.

"The pipelines are in a popular neighbourhood, very close to the express road, which I normally use for my journey to work," he told the BBC News website.

"I could see fire, state ambulances, ambulances of the Red Cross, firefighters, government officials. There were scores of dead bodies on the ground and injured people being carried into ambulances.

"I heard officials saying that the nearby hospitals were full."

Despite being Africa's largest oil producer, Nigerians often suffer fuel shortages because of corruption, poor management and infrastructure problems.

Pipelines often pass through poor communities, who break them to steal the fuel.

"There hasn't been a regular oil supply in Lagos for more than a week now," said Mr Adewunmi. "This has led to people's agitation and some poor people have become determined to get fuel by all means, including by bursting the pipes."

Wow...what a bad way to end the year. :(

Maybe. But if there's any way to end your life and the year I'd want it to literally be with a bang.

Sounds ****ing sick though, damn depressing stuff.

That's the most ******ed thing I've heard today, and that's saying something.

What do you think all the billions we blow on aid is?

A great portion of the money on aid not given through direct aid agencies ends up in the hands of dictators and thieves who crush the common person and live off their misery.

The pipelines in question are owned by the chinese I believe as most Western Nations refuse to deal with some of these nations as they know where the money goes to ... rebels and extremists ...

Sad that we don't actually do anything directly to aid the common person but rather throw money at the problem to ease our troubled consciences ...

And tomorrow someone will post a vid on the internet

Delivered directly by an agency as I suggested. Monies raised that are not put into a direct activity by an agency ... ie United Nations / Monetary Fund / G8 hand-me-downs does not get spent well.

Just google the names of the leaders of the poorest nations and see what they drive ...

We're resonsable for those nations, I don't see why we bother when there's homeless people in America.

Spend the same amount on the needy in the United States and see what happens.

ouch. :wow: Homeless people vs. starving people caught in genocides and epidemic and systemic poverty ... interesting comparison.

We've been trying for decades to make Africa a better place, we keep failing.

Sorry, but they were better off being European colonys.

At least there wasn't cannibals running around skinning pygmies like in the Congo at the moment.

Maybe that is the root of the problem. A people that wants to be free will be free when they are ready to be free.

I just wish that somehow Africa, as with so many places around this small orb, could be a place of hope. It is so hard to hear my daughter praying at night for the child we sponsor in Rwanda knowing how difficult a life there is compared to here.

Maybe this year? :yay:
