Painter comic book artists

Paolo Riviera of the Mythos books.

Tommy Lee Edwards to some extent.

Greg Horn does mostly covers, but has done some illustration work. His work is awesome.

If you are looking for comics by painters here is a really good list of guys who's work you should really track down.

Simon Bisley
Sam Kieth
Kent Williams
Paolo Rivera
Bill Sienkiewicz
Stuart Sayger
Travis Charest
Essad Ribic
Joe Chiodo
Dan Breton
Gabrielle Dell'Otto

Try to avoid Alex Ross if you can.

Have to disagree,Alex has done fine work during his career.Sure he can go a bit masculine on WW,Dinah and most of his female figures alot, but I hate it when people complain about his figures looking like 30 and 40 year old men in tights. It's like what the hell do you expect them to look like?

I have an assignment for my painting class where we have to make an exact copy of a painting. I want to a comic artist. I was thinking of Ross, but he uses watercolor and I don't work well with that medium. Any suggestions of someone who uses oil paints?

Hmmm for your art project I would suggest doing Lictenstein (spelling) he wasn't a comic book artist but he did a lot of paintings that looked like comic panels and you can easily re-create one using acrylic paint. He would be a very easy artist to do a project on if your not a skilled painter and he is just plain fun anyways.

Ross is extremely overrated and his out put is mostly cover work while the other guys I have listed have actually put out a half decent resume of sequential work. Seriosuly..Marvels. Kingdom Come. Justice (which he didnt even pencil). Thats about it. And yes sorry but Ross can't paint a woman to save his life and the way he ages people..well lets just say that there should be a bit of a differnce between old age KC supes and regulear Supes other then gray temples.

Yeah. That might be a little too easy.

Well you want to play to your strengths as well as work on something that will interst you so it's a thought to keep in mind.

But if you really want to focus on a comic artist I would suggest looking at guys like Joe Chiodo, Dan Breton, Dave Johnson, Paolo Rivera and Essad Ribic.

Also you don't have to make it so "easy" if you decide on Lictenstein. Challenge yourself and look at painting on things other then a canvase. For example, when I was in high school I did a project on him and took a painting of his (a guy getting punched..very 60's adam west batman) and painted this on an old tv and painted the tv as well.

Thanks^ I like Essad and Rivera.

Well, the project is basically to recreate it using the same medium and size.

In terms of painting, I usually work with oil, ink and color pencils on illustration board. Not really a canvas kinda guy.

Sounds cool and best of luck on it..be sure to post he results.

And hey your talking to a guy who painted a tv lol I'm of the mind that anything can be used to make art. In grade 10 geography I used the bristol board to do an awesome giant batman piece and used pencils and pens and whiteout and a ton of stuff include a bunch of make up I borrowed from the girl who sat beside me.

I wish I had kept it but I gave it away :(

Thanks a bunch everyone! These'll get me started, but do keep them coming! :)

Some of these I actually knew, even with the 10 years away from the superhero scene. I guess it was Ribic's stuff that reels me back in - his colours are freaking amazing.

That sucks. :csad:

Meh its ok...nothing I can't do again. And it's funny because I use to be big on giving away art...even a simple head sketch but now I'm alot more relaxed about it.

I'm not as nice. I once sold a bunch of crappy gesture drawings on newsprint for $100 bucks. But that may just be the illustrator in me. :p

Cassaday, Del otto, Ross (of course), and Larroca (sp)'s style is something paintish-like  I don't know if he paints or not, but his art rules. :yay:

EDIT: Ribic! I forgot Ribic. :yay:

to some extent you can also look at Frank Frtizetta, but he mostly illustraits books
and Horley has done some fine work.
I also like Jai Lee

John Cassaday and Jae Lee are both pencilers and inkers. They don't paint. Sometimes Cassaday will play around with with ink washes, but that's something different entirely.

spelling has never been my strong suit. I think thats why I became an art teacher rather than an editor.
