I recently rewatched this. Verhoeven pretty much ends the whole romanticized view of the middle ages in the films that came before. His vision is cold, dark, brutal, filled with disease. Rutger Hauer is simply great here. Jennifer Jason Leigh here is sexy as hell. Verhoeven knew how to film her. A great score by Basil Poledouris (Conan The Destroyer). This film is often forgotten when talking about great flicks from the 80s. This is a classic.
