Peanut allergic teen dies after eating cookie he thinks is peanut free

I literally just read this. Half a cookie! HALF A COOKIE. My mind can't wrap around a peanut allergy.

To only eat half a cookie with something you're allergic to on it and you die, I would never go outside. This is the only way I'd ever travel

Packing Peanuts....the Pork Rinds of the Peanut.

After reading the article, the mom had an expired epi-pen in her cupboard and the people on the line told her not to use it. Later, she was told it would've been ok to use but they had no idea if it would have worked. I know people are freaking out at the time but if she was in the right state of mind to check the expiration date, I would've just used it.

Man, not just Peanuts, as if that's not bad enough, but he was allergic to all nuts.

It's pretty scary how powerful a peanut allergy is.

I have a peanut allergy too (not the same kind though), and it's a shame this happened. That stated, growing up with this affliction from an early age too, I know that you cannot trust any dessert item, and you are taking your life into your hands every time you eat any confectionary product that is either made in someone else's kitchen or from a bakery.

Though as a hobby baker, I have to wonder who the heck uses peanut oil in a cookie recipe? I mean, come on, FFS.

This is tragic, and my thoughts go out to his poor mother who had to watch her child die. Peanut allergies are ****ing terrifying! I have to be careful 24/7, and if I eat something that even remotely tastes like peanuts I'm paranoid. Are EMT's not allowed to do emergency tracheotomies? I know there is a bunch of stuff that are no nos for them.

I wonder what that bastard Mr. Peanut has to say about this... I know he did it. I've never trusted those soulless black eyes of his.

I would have had an up to date epi-pen.....

Thats true also. But the article states he was visiting from college so he probably wasn't living there for a few months.

My ex-bf was deathly allergic to bee stings, and he had an epi-pen in his dorm room AND his car's glove compartment. He even showed me how to use it. If the son was visiting, he shouldn't have packed in so deep that nobody but him could have gotten to it. And yeah, expired epi-pen is better than nothing.

And obviously, he should have read the ingredient labels. Due to manufacturing processes, there could be remnants of peanut on anything. You really do have to read the labels.

According to the article, there was no label though and he decided to risk it.
