THE BEAR AND THE BOW (Domestic Release Date: Christmas 2011, Disney Digital 3-D(TM))
Pixar Animation Studios
Director: Brenda Chapman
Producer: Katherine Sarafian
Voice Talent: Reese Witherspoon, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson

A rugged and mythic Scotland is the setting for Pixar's action-adventure "The Bear and the Bow." The impetuous, tangle-haired Merida, though a daughter of royalty, would prefer to make her mark as a great archer. A clash of wills with her mother compels Merida to make a reckless choice, which unleashes unintended peril on her father's kingdom and her mother's life. Merida struggles with the unpredictable forces of nature, magic and a dark, ancient curse to set things right. Director Brenda Chapman ("The Prince of Egypt," "The Lion King") and the storytelling wizards of Pixar conjure humor, fantasy and excitement in this rich Highland tale

wow, pixar's a busy little company isn't it? i like the sound of this one. too bad i'll have to wait til 2011

AICN literally threw up a description of the presentation for this film:

THE BEAR AND THE BOW This will be Pixar’s first fairy tale. It’s an original story from writer/director Brenda Chapman (PRINCE OF EGYPT). Chapman says it’s a fairy tale in the tradition of Hans Christian Anderson and the Brothers Grimm set in Scotland. She took her love of those two things and combined them with her love of her young daughter and came up with this story.

The film is set for a Christmas 2011 release, so there wasn’t much done. I saw some
pre-production art of a witch (short and squat, one eye squeezed shut… very Disney inspired, warts and all), her hut… which was hobbit-hole like, not evil. Saw some art for the fiery haired princess character and a cursed creature, a 15 foot bear.

There is a royal Scottish family in the center of it. King Fergus, Queen Elinor, Princess Merida and the royal triplets (three little brothers). Merida is the heroine of the film. She’s a warrior, a dedicated archer. Hence the “bow” of the title.

They have cast a few people. As the witch (or “wise-woman” as she prefers to be called) is Julie Walters (HARRY POTTER), King Fergus will be played by Billy Connelly, Queen Elinor will be played by Emma Thompson and Princess Merida will be Reese Witherspoon.

Hmm, could be interesting. Totally different than what we're use to from Pixar. We'll see. Two films from them in 2011. They're going strong.

"Reese Witherspoon says her character in Pixar’s 2011 release The Bear and the Bow as 'a girl from royalty who would rather be a great archer and has a Scottish accent'..."

"I get offered a lot of animated movies. I don't know why. Is my voice funny? But something about Susan and Ginormica reached me. And right after that, Pixar came along with another great character. A girl from royalty who would rather be a great archer? And she has a Scottish accent? Who could turn that down? You always go for the great character to play, even if she's animated."

Sounds like a classic 1940s Disney movie made with Pixar's technology.

Sign me up!

It's Pixar's first real attempt at a leading female character (and a female director in Brenda Chapman), and focuses on Merida (Reese Witherspoon), a princess in 10th century Scotland. She's something of a wild girl who's most at home in the Highlands rather than in the family castle, and is somewhat alienated from her family: King Fergus (Billy Connolly), Queen Eleanor (Emma Thompson) and her much younger triplet brothers. We don't know many details of the plot, except that it's less about finding a prince and more about Merida's relationship with her mother (Yay!), but we do know that there will be a baddie, who's a witch (she prefers "Wise Woman") and is voiced by Julie Walters. Only concept art for that one, but gorgeous concept art.

Brenda Chapman has been announced as the writer and director of Disney and Pixar's Summer 2012 feature "Brave" says The Hollywood Reporter.Previously titled "The Bear and the Bow", the story focuses on medieval Scottish princess Merida (Reese Witherspoon) who is a wild girl alienated from her family. After a fight with her mother, she makes a reckless choice that has serious consequences to her father's kingdom and all their lives.
Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson and Julie Walters also star. This marks the first project, Pixar's 13th, to be directed by a woman.

Since the title of the movie has changed, so has the name of the thread.

Looking forward to this one. Interesting to note that this is the first Pixar film with a female lead character, as well as the first of their films to be directed by a woman.

Is it me or is every movie being made coming out in 2012 & nothing beyond it ? :o Does Hollywood know something we don't in terms of the whole 2012 fiasco ?

Love Pixar. Hate Reese Witherspoon. We'll see how this turns out.

Haven't seen a Pixar film that I dislike (yet). Looking forward to this one.

They are stacking up for the end of the world on December 21st 2012.

So, if that's in 2012...what's coming out next year? Don't they do a film a year or something?

They only have Cars 2 planned for June 2011(teaser is rumored to be on the Toy Story 3 Blu-Ray), they got Brave, Monsters Inc. 2 and John Carter of Mars(Live action) planned for 2012.

Looks pretty good to me. Pixar can do no wrong in my opinion.

they did wrong by not making Newt

I agree, and the logo was awesome.

But it's Pixar, apart from Cars it never dissapoints (and Cars weren't bad lol, they were just not as good)

I watched Cars for the first time last week and I cannot believe people don't like that movie. It was really entertaining and funny. It didn’t have any annoying characters like Finding Nemo. I don’t understand the hate for Cars.

Mark Andrews Replaces Brenda Chapman as Director on Pixar’s ‘Brave’?

Our friends at Cartoon Brew are hearing from their “reliable sources” that Brenda Chapman is no longer directing Pixar’s Brave (previously titled The Bear and the Bow).
We hear that she was pushed aside from full directing duties a while back, and that story artist Mark Andrews (who also co-directed the Pixar short One Man Band) has taken over directorial duties. We understand that the change officially happened last week, although it had been inevitable for some time.

This is sad news. If I'm not mistaken, Brenda wrote the story for her daughter. Also, she WAS going to be Pixar's first female director. :(
