When it comes to making movies based on comic books, video games, TV shows, cartoons, etc. do you think there's a point where the filmmakers may do things that try to please that particular genre's fans way too much?

I don't think they even try to satisfy the fans

:whatever: :whatever:

They don't try to satisfy them ALL, if that's what you mean...and that's because you can't, because every individual person will want to see more of something and maybe less of something else and the other guy might want the opposite, even if it's all there in the material.

I meant to post something better but was lazy to edit my own post.. oh well :o

What about what they did with MK: Annihilation?

I think the idea of adapting comic storylines for the big screen isn't always the best.

I guess it depends on how important the character's origin is to the original story.

Personally, I would prefer a format where the origin tales are dealt with before the release of the film with some tv footage kinda like the clonewars cartoon and have them as build ups to the actual film. maybe even an online series or something, something that adds and doesn't crowd the film.

I think all films should be original stories with characters based off the comics with their own twists on things. Also far too much time is spent with the heroes, much more time is required for the villains.

They still don't realise a film is only as good as its main villain.

I think the answer to this in an obvious "yes." I just point to Sony squeezing Venom into the Spider-Man 3. I'm not saying that he shouldn't be included in the franchise, but it didn't seem to work for that movie.

That being said, I think the studios absolutely have to listen to fan input, as they are the custodians of these characters. Writers come and go, as do interpretations, but the fans stick around forever. The fanboy nitpicking aside, they generally know what's best.

I don't think that's true, if fans knew best than why are comic book readers in the minority still, why isn't it a market dominated extravaganza?

and why oh why do so many comic books suck.

If you look at the figures, less than 1% of all comics ever released are any good (nostalgia aside). Yet we continually plough our life savings into them regardless.

Yeah, I think the biggest examples of listening to fans and making it suck have been said, X3 and Spider-man 3.

X3 was just brutalized beyond belief though with the most random logic ever, they listen to fans about the Juggernaut line, but not Callisto? They call Quills, Kid Omega?

Porcupine Man!

Anyway, X3 was directed by Ratner so.. everything's was meant to go wrong

I personally hate when film makers deliberately try to appease the fans. Look at Spider-Man 3 and X-Men 3. 2 horrible films, in large part because they tried to cram so many things into them to please the fans, and the films were jumbled messes. This is also what worries me about the upcomming Wolverine film.

I would much rather see a good film with liberties taken, Iron Man and The Dark Knight both had notable diffrences from the source material, than a movie that tries to please the fans through gratutious cameos and refrences.
