Summit Entertainment has closed multiple presales on Roman Polanski's "Pompeii" after negotiating a co-production and financing deal with Constantin Film says The Hollywood Reporter.

The big-budget epic is an adaptation of Robert Harris' best-selling novel set in the final days of the ancient Roman city before Mount Vesuvius erupted, covering it volcanic ash for centuries.

Casting is under way and Polanski is in preproduction on the feature and plans to begin principle photography late this year or in early 2008 in Alicante, Spain.

The deal will allow "Pompeii" to go ahead without a U.S. distribution deal in place. Worldwide theatrical release is planned for 2009.

Bloom said he's sick of sword-and-sandals genre after eight films and wants to do some theater. But c'mon, it's Polanski. Dunno if he wants to turn that down.

yeah Bloom should go back to theater, develop some talent then maybe come back to the movies.

honestly he's an embarrassment to his British peers.

Polanski Ditches "Pompeii" Epic

Roman Polanski has left his forthcoming production of the epic drama "Pompeii" due to scheduling conflicts reports Screen Daily.

The director pulled out after Summit International indicated it may have to postpone principal photography in Europe next summer due to the possible industry strike.

Polanski's schedule does not allow him to accommodate an uncertain start date beyond 2008, despite having worked for nearly a year on the project's pre-production stage.

Based on Robert Harris' novel, Pompeii centres on a young engineer caught up in political intrigue as Mount Vesuvius is about to erupt.

Summit International is selling worldwide rights and is searching for a replacement director.

Wow, I was watching a thing on the History Channel yesterday about Pompeii and was thinking that it could make a good, big-budget movie. I didn't realize one is actually in the pipeline.

Paul W.S. Anderson Heads to Pompeii

Paul W.S. Anderson looks to be headed to Italy sometime in the first century. The Hollywood Reporter has word that the Resident Evil director has signed on to helm an epic period disaster film entitled Pompeii, to be based on the world's most famous volcanic eruption.

In the year 79 AD, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius wiped out the city of Pompeii, preserving much of the architecture and inhabitants in pumice. The film version is said to incorporate a love story against the tragedy as a slave fights to protect the woman he loves from the disaster.

The film was formerly in the works in 2007 with Roman Polanski attached to direct. He left the project in September of that year and little has been heard from it since.

Anderson, whose next film is the 3D adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' The Three Musketeers, would likely begin production on Pompeii early next year.
