People will pirate anything these days, even public toilets.
Oregon LiveThe Portland Loo doesn't want competition.
City officials filed a copyright infringement lawsuit this week against a Roseburg company making outdoor restrooms that, according to the federal complaint, are "strikingly similar" to Portland's Loo.
Portland wants to block the company, Romtec, Inc., from selling its restrooms. The city also wants Romtec to destroy any restrooms it has made and hand over any profits from the restrooms, among other things.
As first reported by Willamette Week, Romtec sells its "Sidewalk Restroom" for $38,500 -- less than half Portland's $90,000 price.
Former Portland Commissioner Randy Leonard registered the Loo's copyright in 2008. The city has six Loo locations and has sold a handful of restrooms to jurisdictions in Alaska and Canada. But city officials are considering whether Portland's sales efforts are paying off, and a recommendation on the future is expected by year's end.
