Project X Zone Is Getting A Sequel Because The First One Actually Did Pretty Well. April 13, 2015 . 2:33pm

Bandai Namco provides shipment figures.

This past weekend, Bandai Namco announced that Project X Zone, the RPG featuring Namco, Capcom, and Sega characters, is getting a sequel. Said sequel is being released in the West this Fall, too. Crazy, isn’t it?

Maybe not, actually. In their press release, Bandai Namco say that they’ve shipped 400,000 copies of the original Project X Zone worldwide. That’s a figure most Japanese role-playing games can only dream of. So, with that in mind, perhaps the fact that we’re getting another Project X Zone isn’t so crazy after all.

Like the first game, Project X Zone 2 will be developed by Nintendo-owned Monolith Soft, makers of Xenoblade and Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Project X Zone 2 Will Have Better Combat, But The Producer Won’t Say How. June 19, 2015 . 12:00pm

Siliconera had a chance to catch up with Project X Zone 2 producer Kensuke Tsukanaka yesterday at E3.

Siliconera had a chance to catch up with Project X Zone 2 producer Kensuke Tsukanaka yesterday at E3. When asked about how the battle system has changed since the first, he replied:

“We haven’t officially announced this yet, but, we are going to include some new elements to the existing battle system. We actually took it out of the hands-on demo here at E3, but, we’ll be announcing it soon! We know it’ll add more depth to the battle system.”
Project X Zone 2 uses a smoother version of the combat system that debuted in its predecessor, where players use a combination of the A Button and the Circle Pad to input commands and execute tight combos. When asked If they were adding additional commands, Tsukanaka declined to comment on specific details, insisting: “whatever it is, it’ll add depth!”

Stay tuned for a full interview with Kensuke Tsukanaka.

Project X Zone 2 Elaborates, Improves On Its Predecessor. June 25, 2015 . 1:03pm

Project X Zone 2: Brave New World touches upon its predecessor’s weakest points, and emphasizes its best.

The original Project X Zone had some glaring flaws. Its story was a hot mess, the combat was relatively shallow, and battle scenarios followed a very specific formula. Now, those may be harsh criticisms, but there are also a lot of things that it did so, so right—and from what I can tell after playing the demo at Bandai Namco’s showcase this year at E3, Project X Zone 2: Brave New World touches on its weakest points, and emphasizes its best.

The E3 scenario drops you right into a fight outside of what seems to be Kogoro’s headquarters In Shibuya. Juri Han (Street Fighter) and V-Dural (Virtua Fighter) appear here, reprising their roles as rival units in Brave New World, while Sigma (Mega Man X) makes his debut. Juri brings a newly animated special attack with her, Kaisen Dankairaku, while Sigma stays true to his Mega Man X4 design by utilizing his scythe and eye lasers.

The greatest highlight, though, was seeing the new pair units in action. The Virtua Fighter cast is mixed up a bit, as Kage-Maru replaces Pai Chan to make a new pair unit with Akira Yuki. In the first Project X Zone, Akira excelled at launching enemies upward. In Brave New World, both of his side combos launch an enemy horizontally, and only his neutral attack seemed to launch them vertically.

On the Tekken side of things, Kazuya Mishima replaces Ling Xiaoyu to make a pair unit with Jin Kazuma. Their neutral move is Leaping Side Kick & Rising Uppercut, their left attack is Spinning Flare Kick & Hell Lancer, and their right combo is Savage Sword & Roundhouse to Triple Kick Spin (what a mouthful!). Their moves launch the opponent horizontally and excel at keeping the enemy at mid-height in combat.

New to the game is Yakuza: Dead Souls pair Majima and Kiryu. Their neutral move is Double Yakuza Kick. Their right attack is Backbreaker & Knife Combo. Their left attack is Anti-Materiel Rifle & Shotgun. These two hit fewer times, but do a lot of damage, and the left attack keeps the enemy floating at mid-height just before the last hit, if you want to use a solo unit to deal cross damage.

And then there’s X and Zero, together from the last game but playable from what seems to be the beginning. Their neutral move is X-Buster and Z-Saber. Their right attack is Triad Thunder and Ryuenjin, which can be followed up by their left attack, which is Frost Tower & Hadangeki. Their neutral move keeps launches an enemy horizontally, but their directional attacks send enemies straight into the air. Bandai Namco nods heavily toward Mega Man X3 here, as the pair unit gets a remixed version of the game’s introductory stage as one of their themes.

At the end of every fight scene in the demo, I was awarded with a “Charge Bonus.” Though I couldn’t discern what exactly it did, it seemed to power up one, two, or even three of a pair unit’s attacks the next time they fought in battle. In addition, to the bottom right of the XP gauge on the battle screen, there is a turn counter, so players can see how many moves they can execute before moving on.

The battle system has been sped up, even if it’s only in a small way. In the original Project X Zone, if the player K.O.’s an enemy, they’ll be stuck in the combo until they touch the ground. Now, when lethal damage is dealt to an enemy, they will simply disappear in a puff of smoke soon afterward. This helps move battles along a bit faster. In addition, clearing the scenario yielded no second wave of enemies – so perhaps they made it so each chapter is one sweet fight, and not wave after wave of enemies.

Stay tuned for a full interview with Project X Zone 2 producer Kensuke Tsukanaka.

Project X Zone 2 Will Release This November In Japan. June 30, 2015 . 5:15am

First-print bonuses for Project X Zone 2 will include a challenge map DLC titled The Girl from 10 Years Ago, which will give you a special item called “Black Hot Pants” upon clearing it.

[ Bandai Namco have announced in this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine that their crossover Nintendo 3DS RPG will release this November in Japan, along with some details on additional bonuses for the game. [Thanks, Game Jouhou]

First-print bonuses for Project X Zone 2 will include a challenge map DLC titled The Girl from 10 Years Ago, which will give you a special item called “Black Hot Pants” upon clearing it. A special 3DS theme will also be part of the first-print bonus.

The limited edition of Project X Zone 2 will go for 9,980 yen plus tax. This version is called the “Original Game Sound Edition,” and it has a special feature that lets you play using over 60 tracks from the first Project X Zone game.

The limited edition also includes a DLC for “Valkyrie no Boken: Toki no Kagi Densetsu with Xiaomu” which is basically a special arrangement for Valkyrie no Boken’s version of Xiaomu as a playable character.

There will also be a special 3DS theme called “Namco X Capcom 10th Anniversary” as part of the limited edition version. The report also details a new battle system called “Mirage Cancel,” which allows you to press the B button during a regular attack to cancel it, along with a slow motion that works other than with pair units. This makes it easier to get critical hits afterwards.

Project X Zone 2 will release in Japan on November 12, 2015 for Nintendo 3DS.

Project X Zone 2 Demos Mirage Cancels, Monolith Soft’s Bullet Time. July 2, 2015 . 1:01am

The latest Project X Zone 2 trailer shows a lengthy look at some of the game’s characters in action, along with a peek at some of its new features.

Bandai Namco recently revealed the latest of their crossover RPG series with Project X Zone 2 for Nintendo 3DS. The latest trailer shows a lengthy look at some of the game’s characters in action, along with a peek at some of its new features.

The video starts with a look at some of the crossover characters seen in games by Capcom, Bandai Namco, and Sega. At the 5:13 mark, we get to see the new “Mirage Cancel” system, that lets you make everything go into slow motion, making it easier to land critical hits.

Getting more Cancel Points during a Mirage Cancel will get your more XP; however, if you mess up your timing, it’ll decrease your XP and the amount of damage you can dish out, so you’ll want to focus on getting it right while it’s active.

Project X Zone 2 will release in Japan on November 12, 2015 for Nintendo 3DS.

Update: Here’s a look at the Mirage Cancel video in English:

Project X Zone 2 Producer On Bringing More Complexity To The Sequel. July 17, 2015 . 12:32pm

After beating up Juri, Sigma, and V-Dural in Project X Zone 2, I had the chance to sit down and talk with the series producer Kensuke Tsukanaka.

After beating up Juri, Sigma, and V-Dural in the Project X Zone 2 demo this year at E3, I had the chance to sit down and talk with the series producer Kensuke Tsukanaka. I noticed the combat had undergone some subtle changes, and decided to begin by asking the producer himself how the system had been tweaked since the first title was released.

How has the battle system changed since Project X Zone?

Tsukanaka: One of the big differences is, of course, the presentation and graphics. A lot of the sprite animations have been revamped and the New Nintendo 3DS hardware has let us to a bit more on that end. We made the combat flow—both in terms of encountering enemies and simply in doing combos—a lot faster than the previous title.

In terms of the combat specifically, we revamped a lot of the groundwork we laid in the original. We haven’t officially announced this yet, but, we are going to include some new elements to the existing battle system. We actually took it out of the hands-on demo here at E3, but, we’ll be announcing it soon! We know it’ll add more depth to the battle system.

[Note: This was revealed as the Mirage Cancel system.]

How do you make combos flow together? With such a variety of combinations in terms of Solo-Support attacks and Pair-Support attacks, is it difficult to get them to work together without feeling clunky?

Tsukanaka: Originally we had this idea that Project X Zone wouldn’t have these kinds of combo attacks tied to one button. For example, hitting a button would only be one attack—but, that wound up being very clunky, so we decided to use the system we have now. A player really has to pay attention to a few things: the enemy’s position in the air, cross attacks, and which attacks launch enemies in what direction. This made it much easier to chain combos together and, consequently, made the gameplay feel a bit simple. The combo itself though is really dynamic, and each pair unit has a different feel. That was our aim with the combat system and, while it does feel simple, it also feels really satisfying, and pairing solo units with pair units does actually change how players use combos.

When I played through the demo, I got to beat up Sigma with X and Zero. That’s a really great bit of fan service. How do you come up with these kinds of ‘cool’ moments?

Tsukanaka: I’m glad you asked that! The scenario writer for the game, Monolith Soft’s Souichiro Moizumi, puts a lot of thought into these moments. He’s actually quite a courageous guy. Two things he thinks about are where the story can crossover, and what pairs of characters can help those stories cross over, but also make sense. Before he thinks about a scenario, he asks himself ‘if this character appears here then we should make one of their common enemies appear,’ so he thinks about these patterns and makes note of them.

After that, he tries to incorporate each appearance directly into the scenario. So, from the base, he thinks about these encounters, then builds a scenario around them, and then finds a way to link them together in one story arc. That’s how he approaches creating the game’s story.

Now that we’re talking about story, you’ve mentioned that Project X Zone 2 will put more emphasis on its story elements than its predecessor. Has this approach to making “cool moments” made it easier to approach the game’s story?

Tsukanaka: When you compare the scenario and story of Project X Zone and Project X Zone 2, I think that the first title was much simpler. The game had a definite formula of people meeting, getting transported somewhere else, fighting a powerful enemy, and then repeating that process. Some fans weren’t so hot on that, and fans said they wanted to see more depth and complexity. Naturally, we’ve tried to move away from the simple patterns that haunted the last game. We added some more complexity to the story line, including making the player wonder who is going to join the team next, which we didn’t necessarily do in the previous title. The volume of the game, in addition to having more crossovers, actually made it a bit easier to develop a story.

Are there any characters from each of the publishers in this game that you really wanted to use, but didn’t get the chance to?

Tsukanaka: It’s hard to say, really. When we first select the characters, we think about a few things: equal representation from all of the publishers, but also making sense of the character choices in terms of story. I don’t feel we’ve shoe-horned anything in for the sake of fan-service (he chuckles here), everyone has some pull to the story and the roster reflects that. Some suggestions get shot down, but really the ones that wind up in the final game are characters whose worlds have some common ground. This is actually why some of the pairs got mixed around – originally, the pairs were assigned differently. When we were thinking about what we wanted to do with the story, we noticed that using the same pairs would limit what we could do drastically. In fact, it was after re-organizing the pairs that we saw the story unfold, and we used that freedom to make the title better.

Kazuma and Goro from Yakuza Dead Souls appear. What inspired that decision? Is this a pair that just made sense for the story?

Tsukanaka: They definitely came into the story as a result of looking at where the scenario would crossover. For example, and we haven’t officially announced anything like this yet, but Kazuma and Goro have some common ground with some of the characters from Resident Evil, don’t you think? Zombies are a key factor in those games, so maybe you’ll see some kind of collaboration or crossover between these two characters. You’ll be able to find out when you play it!

Project X Zone 2 was a worldwide announcement. Has that changed how you’ve marketed the game? For example, Sakura Wars isn’t exactly popular outside of Japan, and they don’t really appear in the demo or footage you’ve shown.

Tsukanaka: I don’t really think we’ve changed how we advertise the game, at least not In comparison to how we advertised the first. We do consider which characters are more popular for western audiences, though, and we do show them off a bit more since they have that huge fan following. We keep this in mind when we propose character rosters to Sega and Capcom.

Also, some characters like those from Sakura Wars aren’t that popular outside of Japan, but we hope that the popular characters they do like expose them to these characters, and make them say ‘oh, man, these two are kind of cool, I wonder where they come from…?’ That’s one of the goals we have with this title. We don’t think that unfamiliar characters scare off fans, we think it draws in new ones. Think about it: if we didn’t pay attention to these characters, and they didn’t get as much attention as other fan favorites, then doesn’t that reinforce their lack of popularity abroad? The game is about doing the characters justice, and I think getting players to go out and look into those characters’ worlds is an honor.

You mention Monolith Soft, who also did the Baten Kaitos series. Are fans ever going to see that name again, inside or outside of Project X Zone?

Tsukanaka: (laughs) So, do you remember that KOS-MOS and T-elos, from Xenosaga, were in the first Project X Zone game? We didn’t include them just because Monolith Soft was developing Project X Zone, we put them in there because there were so many fans of their games on the team, and that they happened to make sense for the world of the game. The reason there’s not Baten Kaitos characters in the story is because they just didn’t seem to fit in anywhere.

As for the title itself outside of Project X Zone, well, I can’t really say much about that yet, but I think we need some substantial feedback from fans before moving forward with a project like that. What do they want to see from it? What platform do they want to see it on? If we can gather more voices for Baten Kaitos, then maybe we can start something with Bandai Namco Entertainment. That’s about all I can say right now!

How did Summon Night’s Aty become a part of Project X Zone 2?

Tsukanaka: So with Aty, you know that she comes from a world that’s pretty heavily based in fantasy, right? Well, there are a couple of other characters in the game that come from a fantasy world—Yuri Lowell & Flynn Scifo—so she came into the picture because the categories of Summon Night and Tales of Vesperia overlapped. Another reason is that Summon Night is an important intellectual property of Bandai Namco’s.

How do you form a move set for a character like Phoenix Wright, who hardly moves in the games he stars in?

Tsukanaka: Right now we’ve only released screenshots of Wright and Maya talking to other characters. You’ll get to see how he plays in a trailer we’ll be releasing soon, but just to give you peek, we designed his move set closely around how he moves and acted in the courtroom in Ace Attorney games. We’re going to reproduce some of his famous actions in battle, and I think big fans of the game will be really pleased with it.

Project X Zone 2 is a crossover title that brings characters from Bandai Namco, Sega, and Capcom’s franchises together to fight against a common evil. The game is slated for a 2015 release.

Project X Zone 2 Has A Vehicle Made By Gundam 00 Mecha Designer. August 11, 2015 . 3:30pm

Project X Zone 2 features characters from different video games, but it also features guest designers, like Naohiro Washio, known for his work on Mobile Suit Gundam 00 and other series.

Project X Zone 2 features characters from different video games, but it also features guest designers, like Naohiro Washio, known for his work on Mobile Suit Gundam 00 and Square Enix’s now defunct car arcade game Gyrozetter. Monolith Soft producer Koji I****ani shares more on the official blog.

Dr. Chizuru Urashima is the character in red shown in the above image. She’s the head of the Shinra’s Equipment Division and pilots a new vehicle called the “Ryuki Ichi-go/Ryuki #1” or also called the Dragonturtle MK. 1 in English.

The Dragonturtle Mk. 1 is a well-equipped transport vehicle that can travel to various worlds. While we’ll learn more about it in the near future, I****ani wanted to take a moment to show us the vehicle and its designer a little more.

The above images shows the Dragonturtle Mk. 1 in its terrain mode and also in its flight mode.

I****ani said that he’s known Naohiro Washio for quite a while now, and previously talked about how it’d be nice to some day work together. Before he realized it, it’s been several years, and he felt that now that they could use some of his mecha designs, it’d be now or never.

The Dragonturtle Mk. 1 will be like a mobile base of operations where the characters will gather. As far as what kind of scene we’ll get to see it appear in and how it’ll work in the game, I****ani writes on the blog that he hopes we can look forward to finding out more about it later.

Additionally, he mentions that similar to Naohiro Washio, there are other guest designers, and we’ll learn more about them in the near future.

Even Project X Zone 2’s Shopkeepers Are Crossover Characters. August 19, 2015 . 3:30pm

Project X Zone 2 is a buffet of fanservice down to the shopkeepers.
Sylphie, who runs a shop in Capcom’s arcade game Forgotten Worlds,

Project X Zone 2 is a buffet of fanservice down to the shopkeepers. Sylphie, who runs a shop in Capcom’s arcade game Forgotten Worlds, is in Project X Zone 2 as a weapons seller that appears in unexpected places.

The item shopkeeper, Miyuki, comes from a Namco shooter on the TurboGrafx16 called Ordyne. Ordyne has shops in the middle of stages players can fly into and the idea carried over to Project X Zone 2.

Here’s how the store in Ordyne looks as a comparison.

Famitsu also revealed a new character, Sheath. This rabbit girl comes from the North American branch of the same villainous group as Saya. Saya returns from Namco X Capcom as a Project X Zone 2 enemy too. Together, the two characters plan to guide the world into chaos.

Project X Zone 2 Just Got More Badass With A Playable Segata Sanshiro. September 8, 2015 . 7:14am

All the other Project X Zone 2 characters can go home now, Segata Sanshiro has been announced as playable solo unit character.

Segata Sanshiro was the face that advertised the Sega Saturn in Japan back in the ‘90s, and he’ll be a playable character in Project X Zone 2. This week’s issue of Famitsu magazine shares more on what’s new. [Thanks, Hachima.]

For those of you wondering, Segata Sanshiro was protrayed by actor Hiroshi Fujioka, best known for playing the hero Takeshi Hongo, the face of Kamen Rider 1.

As for Sega’s fictional character Segata Sanshiro, while the Sega Saturn wasn’t around that long, those who grew up playing around then now see him as a nostalgic figure in Japan. Segata Sanshiro is a dan holder for multiple Japanese martial arts (see: complete badass).

In addition to Segata Sanshiro, Project X Zone 2 adds Captain Commando from Captain Commando, June Lin Milliam from Star Gladiator, and Heihachi Mishimafrom the Tekken series.

Project X Zone 2 will release in Japan on November 12, 2015 for Nintendo 3DS.

Introducing Project X Zone 2’s Aty, Ciel, and Hibana. September 8, 2015 . 1:30pm

Project X Zone 2 has many new characters joining the cast, so today we’re going over heroines from God Eater 2, Nightshade, and Summon Night.
Part of the fun of entries in the Project X Zone is getting to see how characters from different companies and franchises interact with one another. Getting to see people we love banter with others we care about is entertaining. But, sometimes the games can stump us with unfamiliar faces. Project X Zone 2 has a few of them, which we’ll be reintroducing today.

The first is Aty, from Summon Night. She’s actually so popular in that series that she’s appeared in multiple installments. Our first encounter with her will be Summon Night 5, when GaijinWorks localizes it, but her first appearance was Summon Night 3, where she was the lead heroine. There, she was a kind woman who was part of the army, but resigned after her mercy toward an enemy spy had her set him free, only for him to take a hostage. She then ended up becoming a tutor for the family of the hostage she rescued, but eventually ended up wielding the magical sword Shartos and became guardian of the Forsaken Island. In Summon Night 5, we’ll see her as the Savorle Resonance School principal.

Ciel is another Project X Zone 2 heroine, and originally appeared in God Eater 2. She’s a member of the Blood forces of Fenrir, which means she’s one of the few people in the world who can awaken the Power of Blood and use Blood Arts. (The hero of God Eater 2 is a member as well.) She’s a little socially awkward, due to a strict upbringing where she was taught to only and always follow the rules. Her trademark abilities in her original game are Sensitive and Enemy HP Vision, which show Aragami on the map and their health.

Hibana is the last Project X Zone 2 heroine we’ll meet today, and she might actually look familiar. She’s the protagonist of the PlayStation 2 game Nightshade, sequel to Shinobi. Her goal in her original game is to gather pieces of Hotsuma’s Akujiki sword. She’s a government agent who hopes to use the sword to banish hellspawn from Tokyo after it’s restored, and also happens to be distantly related to the Oboro family. Perhaps she’ll still have the sword in Project X Zone 2?

Project X Zone 2 will be released on the Nintendo 3DS in Japan on November 15. It will come to other regions in early 2016.
