have a mate who's very much a music purist, and dismisses remixing as ruining too many songs, objects to it in principle.

I've always thought 99 percent of remixes are a bit rubbish, but are completely worth it for the occasional gems you get. Things like the Lionhead remix of Start Beginning by Nizlopi (can only link the (admittedly lovely) original cause the bloody thing is still in the shops and theyre keeping a lid on it) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0jik2Vd88g, and this sweet disco remix of Rihanna - Umbrella http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tvxIaF3jzA make me glad there's people who don't mind having their music played with.

Any other genius examples, or anyone anti putting beats over their faves?

I think it depends on who did it. One of my best friends is tired of me saying "hey I have a techno version of that". But she almost fell to the floor when I told her I heard a techno version of something I did not like. It was "Seasons of Love" from Rent. OMG it was HORRIBLE!!! Just made up all fast and sounded like crap. I did find "Defiying Gravity" from Wicked...done very well.
And I tend to not like the ones that go on much longer than 8-9 minutes or so...I'm sorry an 11-12 minute song is just too long =(

This thread is completely obsurd. Remixing can be a very great artform and put a contemporary edge on some old songs which may not have been able to get the light of day otherwise.

Sure there are people who are crap at it and pretty much just sell out yet there are other people who manage to completely re-envision a song and give it a whole new lease of life and perhaps a meaning it wouldn't have been able to have before hand.

It's just like people who direct good music videos or adverts and use certain songs for them to give them a new meaning.

saying one doesn't like 'remixes/covers' is like saying one doesn't like a whole genre of music.

heck, your friend probably does like some remixes but don't even realise they've been released before. It's happened to me so many times.

Well i'm on your side with thinking that dismissing remixes is a bit daft, am curious to see how many people will do that dismissing though

Remixes are great, especially techno and dubstep mixes. Even I do remixes.

I think that Flavor in Your Ear's remix is the best remix I've ever heard. I think that remixes can be good, some can be bad. I cant really think of any specific ones that come to mind [samples aside]

I don't mind some, a few and I do mean a few I've heard I actually enjoyed better than the original version.

Only thing I can't stand is how many remixes Trent Reznor does, he does it to the point where I think he kills the originality of the original version. He seems to have so many of those "Halos" out but most are just remixes of old material.

I love remixes if done right. However, I'm not a fan of mash ups.

Oh man...... talking about remixes..... I heard a TERRIBLE one this past weekend

I LOVE Dave Matthews Band to death! Some BLUEGRASS group had done a remix (or a cover) of "Ants Marching". It was so terrible. I just wanted to scream at the MC of the event to TURN IT OFF. It almost made me cry it was so bad :waa:

And, they played it like 3-4 times in the span of a 6 hour event

they are like movie remakes. I'd rather they just leave the original alone but everyonce in awhile I have enjoyed a remix, rarely better than the original though.

It all depends really. You can't just dismiss entire genres. I think Rob Zombie has some great remixes and actually dig his version of "Blitzkrieg Pop" to The Ramones' (which I know is some kind of blasphemy).

I'll admit it does get to me when people ask "Hey, have you heard this?!" and I have to reply "Yeah...8 years ago." and then explain to them that what they heard really isn't anything new.

Isnt that more of a cover song than a remix.

When I think remix i think like that song that mizes Missy elliot and ACDC and stuff like that. Same song with extra additions.

I always figured covers and remixes were one and the same. They're both someone else's interpretation of someone else's work (although sometimes they flat out copy the entire thing).

Oh and when Black Label Society covers Black Sabbath or Ozzy it is always awesome. Same goes for Ozzy covering anybody.

well, when it comes to Rihana's Umbrella, the remixes I have are actually better than the original... I like remixes more sometimes than the original because it has a dance feel to it, and I like dance music

BLS covers of Sabbath or Ozzy are awesome because Zakk Wylde rocks!

Zombie's version of The Ramones was more of a cover but yeah his White Zombie and Solo remixes were pretty damn good.
