Not as high on this movie as others. Not bad. But I guess I expected more.

Third week in and it stayed number 2 in an insanely crowded weekend. Wow.

I loved this movie. Some of those quips just hit home big time. I don't think it's the greatest ever movie or anything but it's a damn good movie!

Just got back from watching this and I really liked it. Equal parts hilarious, tense and uplifting. My only gripe is the heavy exposition throughout the movie, but most of it didn't detract my enjoyment.

9/10

Just saw this myself, loved it! Way better than the other recent space movies like Interstellar and Gravity, IMO. The landscape imagery on Mars was breathtaking and it was unexpectedly funny with Matt Damon's quips and charisma.

Oh and I can't believe I didn't recognize Sebastian "Bucky" Stan until the credits rolled. :o

Saw this recently and LOVED it! It's such a good film! I got through most of the book before going to see the movie, and not knowing what was going to happen at the end, while at the same time being quite familiar with all of the characters, made the last few minutes incredibly suspenseful for me.

I did the same thing! Had no idea it was him.

Loved the movie. Damon was hilarious throughout the movie. 8/10

Just getting back home after seeing this. Wow. Just excellent across the board. Damon obviously anchors this with his screen presence but the rest of the cast and the screenplay bring it to another level and Scott brings his incredible talent and wide experience to then put it over the top.

I could see how some might want some more meat on the supporting characters' bones, but I think the balance of characters serving the plot while being engaging and interesting in and of themselves was what defined this tale in the end. Epic in ideas but also personable and entertaining. I think Drew and Scott made for a very good combo and I would enjoy see them pool talents again on another project. Glad I saw it before it got out of theaters.

Saw it ages ago --don't remember if I posted my rating but it's a solid 4.5/5 stars for a sci-fi film. I also mentioned that it was one of Scott's best works since Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut and best sci-fi since Blade Runner (all way back to 1982).

I was pleasantly surprised by this, I tend to find Astronaut movies dull and dry, I prefer my sci-fi with X-Wings and Aliens, but the witty script and eventful pacing made this a cut above the recent space travel movies for me.

Mark Whatney is the MacGyver of Botany, a one man A-Team of agriculture! The aforementioned script makes his diary updates a driving force of the film, I don't claim to understand the science of what he was doing, but the likable performance from Damon armed with the sharply humorous script makes the character very relatable, and the recreation of Mars really makes this a visually immersive experience.

The suits and boffins back at home trying to mount the rescue mission are thankfully a lot more engaging than they often are in these things, and Mark's fellow crew members of the Ares are also a lively bunch, and I think that's the key to the film, it doesn't shy away from Mark's plight and the challenges that face him, but there is a light touch to the whole movie that actually keeps you entertained while delivering the science and the stakes.

8/10

One of the best movies of 2015 for me... 9/10.

This is probably the best 2015 movie I've seen last year. It was amazing! An instant 10/10 to me!

Watched this again on BD, it stands up to repeat viewing very well, still a great flick.

I'm probably going to be alone in this, but I had some problems with the characterization. Why should I care about Mark Whatney? I get that it's Matt Damon, who has a charming presence, playing a stranded astronaut. That's a solid premise, but that alone isn't enough reason for me to care about him as a character. Who is he? What's his life like on earth? Outside of the "assumed empathy", why should I want him to return? All I know about him is that he is good at what he does, and his parents are alive.
The rest of the characters weren't much better. I couldn't tell you a single thing about the numerous generic scientists whose entire role was to spout exposition at each other. I thought some of the astronauts on board the ship (Michael Pena, Jessica Chastain) were better developed, but I still left that movie going, "I just watched a bunch of strangers figure out a problem". It was a very interesting problem, no doubt, and watching them figure it out was certainly well-crafted, but I didn't care about anyone involved.
Again, I know I'm probably alone on this, but I was pretty disappointed.

You're not alone. I liked it but didn't love it. I found some parts boring. I am a big fan of space sci-fi. So this film is up my alley but it just didn't work as well for me as most others.

I wasn't emotionally invested in the characters. They were doing things particularly Matt Damon's character but there wasn't a lot of heart there and that's when I felt bored in parts . I enjoyed the Sci fi part and the exposition was fine. But I had no emotional connection to them at all. As a result some parts were slow because I'm watching scenes without feeling. I didn't know much about him other than he's stranded on Mars, he's a botanist, hates disco, that kind of thing

I had a mostly ok experience but it was an empty feeling. Unlike when I watched Apollo 13 or the movie with Tom hanks. I loved those movies.

So glad I'm not the only one. I couldn't get into anything because it was just watching a bunch of strangers figure out how to save a guy I don't know. I didn't care one bit when he got back to earth because I don't know why I'd want him there to begin with besides the assumed empathy and the obvious "It's Matt Damon! Everyone loves Matt Damon!" crutch they were leaning on.
It was a mediocre movie that was showered with praise, and took the best comedy golden globe away from what was truly the best comedy of the year, Trainwreck.

I respect your guys opinions but I have to disagree, I was invested in his journey from the off and the stuff he had to go through to survive.

I do think things came to him a bit too easily at times during the movie but my investment in the maim character has just increased when I watched the movie again. By the end when we what he has endured right up until his rescue made me happy when he was rescued.

Some of yall may have heard that a special edition blu-ray is in production and would include a feature length making-of documentary and other new special features. Welp, according to easydvd.com.au it will also have an extended cut of the film. It has a release date of June 8. But that date isnt official yet so that may change or be different in America.

Wonder how long the EE will be? Wish they had released it with the normal release instead of making us double dip. I like the theatrical cut a lot though personally so may skip this.

A lot of that has to do with the streamlining involved in the adaptation process. There's a lot of problem solving that just takes place in kind of montage form or off screen. In the book every step of the way is an onslaught of misfortnue and problem solving.

The film doesn't have much rewatch value for me, but I want to watch the Charles de Lauzirika making-of doc. He always makes great documentaries of Scott's productions.
