Just saw this myself, loved it! Way better than the other recent space movies like Interstellar and Gravity, IMO. The landscape imagery on Mars was breathtaking and it was unexpectedly funny with Matt Damon's quips and charisma.
Oh and I can't believe I didn't recognize Sebastian "Bucky" Stan until the credits rolled.![]()
I'm probably going to be alone in this, but I had some problems with the characterization. Why should I care about Mark Whatney? I get that it's Matt Damon, who has a charming presence, playing a stranded astronaut. That's a solid premise, but that alone isn't enough reason for me to care about him as a character. Who is he? What's his life like on earth? Outside of the "assumed empathy", why should I want him to return? All I know about him is that he is good at what he does, and his parents are alive.
The rest of the characters weren't much better. I couldn't tell you a single thing about the numerous generic scientists whose entire role was to spout exposition at each other. I thought some of the astronauts on board the ship (Michael Pena, Jessica Chastain) were better developed, but I still left that movie going, "I just watched a bunch of strangers figure out a problem". It was a very interesting problem, no doubt, and watching them figure it out was certainly well-crafted, but I didn't care about anyone involved.
Again, I know I'm probably alone on this, but I was pretty disappointed.
You're not alone. I liked it but didn't love it. I found some parts boring. I am a big fan of space sci-fi. So this film is up my alley but it just didn't work as well for me as most others.
I wasn't emotionally invested in the characters. They were doing things particularly Matt Damon's character but there wasn't a lot of heart there and that's when I felt bored in parts . I enjoyed the Sci fi part and the exposition was fine. But I had no emotional connection to them at all. As a result some parts were slow because I'm watching scenes without feeling. I didn't know much about him other than he's stranded on Mars, he's a botanist, hates disco, that kind of thing
I had a mostly ok experience but it was an empty feeling. Unlike when I watched Apollo 13 or the movie with Tom hanks. I loved those movies.
Some of yall may have heard that a special edition blu-ray is in production and would include a feature length making-of documentary and other new special features. Welp, according to easydvd.com.au it will also have an extended cut of the film. It has a release date of June 8. But that date isnt official yet so that may change or be different in America.

I respect your guys opinions but I have to disagree, I was invested in his journey from the off and the stuff he had to go through to survive.
I do think things came to him a bit too easily at times during the movie but my investment in the maim character has just increased when I watched the movie again. By the end when we what he has endured right up until his rescue made me happy when he was rescued.
Wonder how long the EE will be? Wish they had released it with the normal release instead of making us double dip. I like the theatrical cut a lot though personally so may skip this.
