Well, I only laugh at movies because I want everyone to look at me and see/hear how funny I think things are.

I disagree. It's like saying people shouldn't laugh during a movie because the actors can't hear you.

If someone likes a movie and it's not hurting anyone let them applause, that's how I look at it. It's a human emotion to applause because it just creates a positive experience.

But that would be denying that laughter is involuntary. We're just splitting hairs. I think I'll stick to sitting in theaters with my arms crossed. :woot:

I'm looking forward to seeing it soon, after reading the comments on here. It's nice to see, too, after Ridley Scott getting some poor reactions to some of his more recent films - though I really did like Prometheus, personally - that he's hit one that people like.

Just watched it. The whole family liked it, including the wife.

The Martian is at the top of this weekend's box office:

Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up: October 4, 2015

http://screenrant.com/the-martian-sicario-box-office/

Coming in first is The Martian (read our review), which posted $55 million in its first three days. That’s just below the October opening record that was established by Gravity in 2013 ($55.7 million), meaning this film marks a much-needed comeback for star Matt Damon and director Ridley Scott. Critically hailed as the best film they’ve been involved with in years, it’s also on track to become one of their top commercial earners. The Martian has the second-highest debut for any movie Damon has starred in (trailing only The Bourne Ultimatum), and it’s also the same for Scott.

One would expect The Martian to hold well in the coming weeks. The word of mouth is enthusiastic , meaning it should continue to bring in large crowds throughout the month. It’s true that in October the multiplex will start to get a little crowded as projects with aspirations towards awards open, but The Martian is riding high after a strong weekend and is certainly off to a rousing start. It has the widespread appeal and generally positive reception that’s needed to become the blockbuster hit of the season.

I loved it... read the book this week as well, before hand.

All of the cast, and Scott respected and brought the book alive greatly.

I luckily blocked out all video/photos of the film and went in blind. Was surprised to see Donald Glover, Mackenzie Davis, and Sean Bean (wish they let him more on that LOTR joke).

Slightly disappointed in the exclusion of the
Aquaman joke, the rover rolling, and some more of Mark's science knowledge especially concerning the rover manipulation and cross-country traveling. As well as the initial error SOL date/way it went about and the Iron-Man thing actually happening.
Yet, none of those effected the film.

Even though the prologue was added, I really enjoyed it. It was nice seeing past the book's finale and the way Ridley added the 'credits' into it was the best I've seen of something along those lines. Usually films use footage we'd seen earlier or photo fade-ins, this was neat and different.

I felt the same as antsman41, but I never read the book. Furthermore, the director had good choices for actors and it portrayed such a beautiful and diverse cast.

It did have a lot of suspense and great acting, but I think in general, I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10 for general movie goers. For those who like science-rich movies, you will ultimately be giving it a higher rating than that.

I must apologize for my skepticism about Damon and Scott. My attitude turned around in the first 15 minutes during the staple scene. Damon was a perfect Watney; And the movie was beautiful and well directed.

My oldest son spent the whole movie griping about the scientific inaccuracies. He was really upset about
the USB Port in the airlock that was supposed to power the bomb, especially because they called it a lighting panel.

He would despise "Gravity". He refuses to watch that one.

There are plenty of Earth bound Ridley Scott films i have loved Blade Runner,Gladiator,Someone to Watch Over Me
to name a few,but there is just something about his Sci Fi space adventures and thrillers that really appeal to me
From the tech, spacesuits, and vastness of a planet it's always great to behold.
In The Martian RS gave me all of the aforementioned and then some.

Mat Damon is great as astronaut Mark Watney, thought to be deceased after a severe storm on Mars causes an accident
his friends and fellow astronaughts leave his"remains" behind ,but when they and NASA find out he is alive, the mission becomes
all about his rescue and survival

This is an all around great movie, sharp and interesting script by Drew Goddard based on Andy Weir's 2011 novel, and its
also laced with a good amount of humor and with some great edge of your seat moments ,and an outstanding cast which includes
Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Sean Bean, Benedict Wong, Mackenzie Davis, Donald Glover,Jessica Chastain, Michael
Pena, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan, and Aksel Hennie.

This is Ridley Scott at his best

Scale of 1-10 a 10

Your son must be fun at parties...

While that was a bit of an odd production design choice, I've seen all kinds of things powered by USB plugs.

That is the weirdest gripe to have about that finale.

This is easily Ridley Scott's best film since Gladiator. I'm not only hoping, but expecting an Oscar nod for Best Picture.

Loved this movie. Not quite as much as Sicario, but it was certainly more straight-up enjoyable and easily one of the year's best, imo.

In his "10 Movies to watch after seeing the Martian" article on FilmSchoolRejects, Christopher Campbell refers to the Martian as an "Expressionless space program infomercial" while recommending Interstellar.

The Martian is many things but to call it "expressionless" is idiotic.

Sicario and The Martian are both the extreme end of the spectrum when it comes to tone and both manage to be amazing.

Even though it didn't get as detailed as it was in the book (which would've been impossible) I'm happy how accurate it is, with the science. It gives the movie more credibility.

I bet the movie "Armageddon" makes him lose his mind.
