Given how this series isn't exactly known for it's happy endings, anyone else think that IF Franco came back for the sequel that they'd kill him off at the end?

Or he's already dead from the virus and we follow a new lead.

I hope to see this again before it leaves theaters.

I think the lead in the next film should obviously be the astronaut. But Franco should be alive and working WITH the apes as sort of a slave/assistant to a scientist ape. A traitor to his people.

I think I'd like to see how the apes managed to rule the human race while the astronauts are out in space (being lost like the newspapers said). Maybe a time lapse (or in the third movie) towards the end as we see the spaceship coming to earth before cutting to the end credits.

Nah not feeling it, i prefer to not see any anything relating to the original. Plus wasnt that 100 years in the future?

More than that it was a few thousand years in the future wasnt it?

The original Apes timeline does get muddy.

I'd rather they not try and line this movie up with the original series. I think things could become quite confusing and continuity will be tough to maintain.

I'd rather see them keep it loosely connected. I liked some of the "nods" to the original series that this movie had.

True.

Finally saw this today, apart from a couple of weak moments, this really did live up to the hype, great film and I will be in line when the sequel comes out.

I was really impressed with this movie, I guess I wasn't expecting a whole lot. I already can't wait for the DVD to come out, so i can watch for all of the little things I missed.

^I'm pretty sure it will be announced soon when BD/DVD will be out, I for one will be buying it as I think the movie will warrant re-watching.

This being very good didn't come as a surprise to me as it initially did to many, as so many people whose movie views I trust rated it highly.

Franco is solid in his role as are Freida Pinto and Lithgow in their supporting parts, but the film is all about Ceaser, perhaps the greatest piece of performance capture and CGI work ever committed to film, Andy Serkis is the movies lead.

The story is pretty similar in inception to Deep Blue Sea, but the character drama that develops is extremely engaging; never have I felt for a CGI character as I did for Caesar, it's hard to have your lead be a CGI ape, yet it felt as natural as a human character, such was the quality of the script and performance.

Obviously we know a turning point will come and when it did I was little surprised at the Ape prison (Are there really that many apes in captivity in San Francisco?) that felt like a Cruella Deville type deal, a bit heavy handed for sure but watching Caesar adapt to his environment and slowly formulate a plan and recruit his fellow apes was fascinating.

When the movie hits it's crescendo Wyatt delivers a wonderful running battle/escape, visually stunning, great shot selection and superbly executed moneyshots on the Golden Gate Bridge section of the finale.
I thought the final scene between Will and Caesar was also beautifully done.

The after credits scene sets a sequel up and how the fact we wiped ourselves out rather than the apes will play in a sequel interests me, as Will in particular must be carrying a lot of the guilt.

For me this was probably the best blockbuster of an average summer.

According to Box Office Mojo, this film has made $175,394,199 domestically and $255,400,000 overseas, for a worldwide box office of $430,794,199! All of that on just a $93 million budget! (And it hasn't even hit China yet!)

And here's the DVD/Blu-Ray press release, which also displays the DVD/Blu-Ray cover:

A single act of both compassion and arrogance leads to a battle unlike any other when RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES makes its worldwide debut on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download on December 13th in North America and starting December 7th Internationally. From the Oscar-winning® visual effects team that brought to life the worlds of Avatar and Lord of the Rings comes revolutionary new ground - a CGI ape that delivers a dramatic performance of unprecedented emotion and intelligence, and epic battles on which rest the upended destinies of man and primate.

James Franco (127 Hours) stars as Will Rodman, a neuroscientist living in San Francisco trying to develop a cure for Alzheimer’s disease by testing on chimpanzees, giving them a human level of intelligence. After a test subject’s baby, Caesar, is orphaned, Will decides to raise him at home on his own with his Alzheimer-stricken father (John Lithgow; "Dexter"). What begins simply as a continuation of his experiment quickly turns into a problem for Will, as Caesar is taken away from him and forced to live in a primate facility. As Caesar’s intelligence continues to grow, he begins to stake his claim as the leader of his new primate counterparts, which will ultimately lead to the RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES.

Directed by Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist), this special effects blockbuster features fantastic supporting performances from Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), Brian Cox (Red), Tom Felton (Harry Potter films) and Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) in a ground-breaking performance. The RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Blu-ray is loaded with bonus material including deleted scenes, making-of featurettes commentaries and more.

There we go now that is a nice selection of Special features, I was so disappointed in TF3's special features. I cant wait to get this.

That's a lot of Special Features, and the cover art is great!

I love that cover art, I can't wait for the second one.

Definately buying this when it comes out, cant wait to see it on BD, especially Caeser and the finale.

Looks like a sequel is taking shape at Fox. The studio has locked in Andy Serkis to return, a multi-film contract that ensures him a seven-figure salary. Rupert Wyatt's contract includes a sequel option, so he's returning as well. Screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are returning to write, alongside the original producers. They're in the idea stage, so no release date or production date is set yet.

Fox will also organize a big Oscar campaign for Andy Serkis' performance as well.

As much respect as I have for his work, I'd still be a bit sketchy towards giving Serkis or any other mocap artist an acting oscar. Their performance is integral but it is one part of many involved there. Its not quite the same as makeup. However given the increase in use of this technology I think its about time AMPAS starts recognizing this work in another way.

Great that Serkis will return, and so is many of the core crew. Seven figures is a lot of money but it's worth it because if the sequel doesn't have Serkis, it would be pointless to make it. I'm very interested to see where the sequel will go next.

Regarding the oscar campaign for Serkis, I curious to see if it'll get noticed or ignored by the academy voters.
