Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams Lose Copyright Lawsuit

At least this outcome makes more sense than that whole thing with Sam Smith's song supposedly sounding like Tom Petty's.

Which it didn't.

At all.

This probably wouldn't have happened if Thicke hadn't filed a lawsuit against Marvin Gaye's family for saying they copied in the first place. :whatever:

EDIT: Regarding Smith/Petty, I do hear it in the chorus.

Exactly what I thought when I first heard about the Tom Petty thing yesterday. Nothing like it.

Was I the only one who didn't find the song "rapey"?

I didn't like the song but maybe I need to listen to the lyrics more. But the whole "i know you want it" line didn't seem bad to me. Ive heard songs use it before with no complaint.

On the actual case, Im reading people say this is a bad thing for music producers

You're not the only one. Whether it's a good song or not can be argued, but I never once thought the lyrics were "rapey".

I mean I just understood the line as saying "Youre throwing me all the signals. I know you want to hook up but you don't wanna be 'that kind of girl' I hate those 'blurred lines'/mixed signals"

It's not like the "put a molly in her champagne" line where there is no way to take that any other way

That's what happens when you don't ask for permission and wear a stupid hat.

It's the melody.

When I first heard Blurred Lines the first thing I thought of was the Marvin Gaye version.

Nothing is wrong with being influenced by other music but flat out stealing without getting permision is a no-no.

What's even worse is when they act like their song doesn't sound like what they've been accused of stealing from.

Looking at you, Vanilla Ice. :o

oh yeah that ICe Ice Baby/Under Pressure thing is ridiculous

It's a slippery slope, man. I think they may start doing this with a lot more songs now.

the thing about music is that there's a finite number of chord progressions and if you look hard enough eventually you'll find something that your "new" song sounds similar to

Kanye does it all the time, but he pays the folks he samples.

Thicke and Pharrell straight up acted like they came out with some new ****. Pharrell talkin' about how he wrote the song in about an hour. Oh lawd.

Emily Ratajkowski is the only reason to see the video anyway. :oldrazz:

Anyone seen Big Eyes from Tim Burton?

Anyone reminded of the court scene?

Haha, 7 million.

While the family was just awarded $7.4 million -- and is currently seeking an injunction against the song -- that doesn't mean their legal battle is over. According to some online, Williams' 2014 mega-hit "Happy" bears a similar sound to Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar."

"I'm not going to lie. I do think they sound alike," Nona Gaye, Marvin's 40-year-old daughter, said. However, she added that she wasn't thinking about the legal implications right now. "We're not in that space."

Ridiculous. A song is bound to sound like another song. Who the hell cares.

Yep. I actually think Sam and his writing team got influenced by Eddie Vedder's rendition instead. It's startlingly similar from the YT clip. Anyway, it's settled amicably and Tom Petty is getting some royalty.

it was kinda similar but I'm not really happy about the result. I write songs and sometimes I get scared if my songs might be similar to other songs.

If the Gaye/Thicke song is kinda similar, the SamSmith and the other song was more similar in the chorus part.

If they can get an injunction against that POS Blurred Lines song I'd be even happier. While we're at it how about someone gets an injunction against Swift and her endless regurgitation of her shallow vapid dating life.

is there a version of the video where she's totally naked?

That's what shows up on google images, but ... is it photoshopped?

There's an uncensored version where she's topless.
