Does The Fabled ROBOTECH Movie Have A Writer??

Merrick here...

A "good source" for the folks over at CHUD says that Lawrence Kasdan has been drafted for scripting duties on the Tobey Maguire-led ROBOTECH live action movie adaptation. You can read their report HERE.
Fascinating choice, if correct.
Geeks will remember Kasdan as a scripter on THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (with Leigh Brackett), RETURN OF THE JEDI (with Unca George), and RAIDER OF THE LOST ARK (from a story by Lucas & Philip Kaufman); he's also written/directed a raft of titles including SILVERADO, GRAND CANYON, WYATT EARP, and the awkward adaptation of Stephen King's DREAMCATCHER. He's recently been associated with the long-brewing remake of CLASH OF THE TITANS as well.
ROBOTECH is about the development of giant fighting machines (mecha) that are back engineered from alien technology found here on Earth; said tech is subsequently used to fend of extraterrestrial invasions (this is an extremely simplified description). The long-lived franchise has previously been realized via numerous animated installments that looked like this

I just finished watching it last week on Netflix

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the show, despite it's strangeness and frankly the usual anime translation stupidity of that era when they just re-wrote the original Japanese series, ala Voltron. For me, Robotech will always remind me of my Grandma. Grandma used to get me ready for school in the mornings. At the time in NYC Robotech was show WAY early in the mornings, well before 7am usually. I always liked watching stuff like it. I knew there was a difference between stuff like Speed Racer, Battle Of the Planets (Gatchaman) and Voltron and the other toons even before I know what anime was precisely. Grandma for some reason really got into the show, noticing how it differed from the other cartoons of the time. I think she understood that it was a mix of sci fi and soap opera. Of course my Grandma, who is still alive and turning 85 this year, is also a big fan of the Netflix Daredevil show, and believe it or not, Archer.

song was stuck in my head, really loved The Next Generation.

Man, Robotech was a staple of my early teens. Friends and I would gather after school to watch it , and even played the Palladium Robotech RPG.

A truly great sci-fi saga. Personally, I hope they don't try and remake it and then ruin it.

Technically... Wasn't Robotech itself a bastardization though?

The Robotech theme was glorious! :hmr:

If I recall, Robotech was edited differently for the US/EU than Japan and other mecha series were added as follow-up, MACROSS Southern Cross and Mospeada. MACROSS was the original name of Robotech.
I checked for details on wikipedia.

I wasn't a huge fan of Southern Cross, Dana was annoying, also kinda wished they would of focused more on Marie and Sean

I had tons of Robotech comics from Comico, Eternity, Antartica, and Academy but then I decided to pare my collection down and kept only what I felt was worth keeping and while I still love Robotech (I have DVD's CD's artbooks) the artwork on many of those comics is just downright awful that I eventually gave them to my local comic store for store credit.

As for the live action movie, we've been hearing these talks for years that you have a better chance of scouring for a bootleg copy of Robotech The Movie at a convention.
