Rodea the Sky Soldier coming to Wii U, 3DS in spring 2015
Published 11 hours ago. 14 comments.

Prope's long-awaited action game finally set for release.
Rodea-Wii-U-3DS-2015.jpg

Rodea the Sky Soldier, formerly a Wii and 3DS title, is now coming to Wii U and 3DS in spring 2015, the latest issue of Famitsu reveals.
The Wii U version will cost 7,200 yen and the 3DS version 5,800 yen.
In Japan, the game was previously known as Tenkuu no Kishi Rodea. It is now called Rodea the Sky Soldier. However, Japanese blogs list the first-print Wii U version of the game as including the Wii version of Tenkuu no Kishi Rodea.
The Prope-developed, Kadokawa-published action game features free 360-degree movement throughout the skies and colossal-size boss battles. It puts players in the role of Rodea, a machine soldier who lost his memory and is discovered and reactivated by Ion. Both characters, as well as a mysterious girl named Cecilia, appear in Famitsu.
The game is produced by Kadokawa Games’ Yoshimi Yasuda and directed by Kadokawa’s Zin Hasegawa, who was formerly the producer. Development is 85 percent complete.
Given that we haven’t heard from it in a while, we took the liberty of translating the story and character details from the game’s old website. Get that below.
Story
A special day and a special promise made to a certain someone…. In an adventure that will cross time and space, when the Naga Empire comes to attack the floating land of Garuda, Rodea, a legendary machine, wakes up from his 1000-year slumber to fight back.
Characters

  • Rodea (voiced by Yuichi Nakamura) – The protagonist. A high-performance robot with the ability of flight developed as part of the top-secret “R Project.” One day, in order to keep his promise with a certain someone, he passes through time to battle the machine soldiers of the Naga Empire.
  • Ion (voiced by Kana Hanazawa) – The heroine. A likable girl who tinkers with machines and lives in the floating country that is Garuda. She sets off on an adventure to protect Rodea and Garuda. Her face is similar to that of Cecilia, a princess rescued from Garuda 1,000 years prior.
  • Cecilia – The legendary princess. 1,000 years ago, carrying a dark secret of some sort, she attempted to flee her native land the Naga Empire and go to Garuda. Her wishes are the catalyst for the storyline.

Rodea the Sky Soldier Lives; Coming To Wii U And 3DS Spring 2015. November 11, 2014 . 3:47am

Rodea the Sky Soldier was originally announced back in 2011, as a NiGHTS style game by Sonic the Hedgehog creator Yuji Naka and his studio Prope.

Rodea the Sky Soldier was originally announced back in 2011, as a NiGHTS style game by Sonic the Hedgehog creator Yuji Naka and his studio Prope. This week’s issue of Famitsu magazine confirms the game is still alive. [Thanks Game Jouhou]

To give you an idea of what the game is like, think of it as a NiGHTS-style flying action game, where you get to shoot down all kinds of aerial machines.

While it seemed like the game had been cancelled after going so long with little information, Kadokawa Games mentioned last year that Rodea was still in development.

According to the magazine report, Rodea the Sky Soldier was originally in development for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii, but it will now release for Wii U and 3DS. There was also an original Wii version of the game, which was completed back in 2011, but never released. Since then, they began new developments for a Wii U version of the game.

The Wii version of Rodea the Sky Soldier that never released will also be included in first-print copy of Rodea the Sky Soldier for Wii U when it releases in Spring 2015 in Japan.

See how Prope's flying action game looks on Wii U.
Famitsu has gone up with its first online preview of the newly resurfaced Rodea the Sky Soldier for Wii U and 3DS.

The action game begins on the floating continent of Garuda, in the ruins of which a curious girl named Ion discovers and reactivates Rodea, the legendary “Majin” machine soldier, after a 1,000 year slumber. Rodea lost his memory and is found with his right arm completely destroyed. All that remains of his memory is a “fierce battle from the past” and “a girl with facial features similar to Ion.” He and Ion join forces to fight against the machine empire of Naga, who are approaching Garuda with the aim to capture the continent’s “Gravity Energy.”

Rodea the Sky Soldier will launch in Japan in spring 2015. First-print copies of the Wii U version will include Tenkuu no Kishi Rodea, the original and unreleased Wii version of the game.

Rodea the Sky Soldier’s cast, setting detailed
Published 18 hours ago. 0 comments.

Get to know the characters and world of the game a little more closely.
rd1-600x337.jpg

Coming off of the recent trailer released earlier this week, Kadokawa Games has released more information on Rodea the Sky Soldier, the Prope-developed action game for the Wii U and 3DS, focusing on the major cast and setting of the game, as well as detailing a small amount of information on some of the gameplay. Catch our translation below.
Story Overview
In the Naga Empire, everything has become mechanized, a feat made possible thanks to the power of what’s known as “Gravity Energy.” Not all is well in Naga, though, as it sets out to invade Garuda, a floating continent filled with natural beauty, for the first time in a millennium. The last time this happened, Cecilia, the princess of the Naga Empire, entrusted her will to a robot by the name of Rodea and disappeared without a trace.
After being found in some ruins in the present day by a mechanic named Ion and undergoing repairs, Rodea is awoken once again, his knowledge of the old princess’ whereabouts hidden somewhere deep in the recesses of his memories.
Characters
rd2-400x610.jpg

Rodea
Rodea is a humanoid robot with the power of flight. Having formerly been Cecilia’s escort, the two once attempted to escape to Garuda, but ultimately failed, with only Rodea making it out to somewhere else after being forced to flee. The next time he awakes, 1000 years have passed. Together with Ion, the girl who finds and repairs him, he once again faces down the Naga Empire, whose vigor has returned to it.
rd3-400x565.jpg

Ion
In spite of old legends long making her fellow villagers deeply wary of machines, believing them to be demonic apparitions, Ion is a precocious girl with a deep interest in machines and as such loves tinkering with them. After finding Rodea in some ruins and bringing him back to life from his 1000-year slumber, she stands beside him, working to stop the Naga Empire’s advances into Garuda. Physically, she greatly resembles Cecilia, especially her eyes and face.
rd4-2-400x373.jpg

Cecilia
Cecilia was the imperial princess of Naga. Intent on stopping her father Geard’s invasion of Garuda, she and Rodea attempted to flee the empire, but she ultimately had to leave him behind and disappear. She’s a kindly girl with a big heart.
Take to the Skies!
Rodea’s gift of flight lets him soar in the air not just in a straight line, but also in arcs. He can propel himself especially quickly by making good use of his Boost Attack, which is also a great way to deal massive amounts of damage to enemies.
Each stage in the game is designed with a number of special gimmicks, with clever navigation opening up alternate routes that can players can roam through. Gimmicks can include things such as special switches placed throughout stages, as well as rope lines that Rodea can latch onto with his anchor functionality to get around, which were originally designed as a means of allowing locals to traverse between areas with great disparities in elevation.
Fight Some of the Toughest Enemies in the Fiercest Fights in History!
In one rocky, lava-filled area of the game lives Zol en Darc, a gigantic fiery bird who presides over it as its guardian. Should the bird be consumed with rage, its body becomes enveloped in flames, making it a highly dangerous enemy that’s sure to prove to be a spectacular opponent to fight against in the skies.
There are also a band of enemies in the game that bear strong resemblances to Rodea. Like Rodea, they, too, were created in Naga to be Knights of the empire and the prospect of fighting his own kind weighs heavily on him. Indeed, with their own unique powers and special Gears, they’re sure to put up even more of a fight than the Guardians he’ll be facing over the course of the game.

Rodea The Sky Soldier Screenshots Show More From The Mecha Empire Naga. January 11, 2015 . 9:32am

They’re the main enemies of the game, and Rodea will have to find a way to fight them, with the help of his new friend Ion.

After being asleep for 1,000 years, Rodea finds himself in a completely different world after being awakened by a young girl named Ion. 4Gamer shows a little more of this world in the latest screenshots for the game.

The Machine Empire Naga is all about machinery, and they need something called “Gravity Energy” to keep everything running. They’re the main enemies of the game, and Rodea will have to find a way to fight them, with the help of his new friend Ion.

The above image shows Rodea in what appears to be Naga territory. He’ll take flight to take on enemies from the air, but Naga also have plenty of anti-aircraft weapons they’ll use in attempt to shoot him down.

Rodea was originally a personal guard for the imperial princess Cecilia, daughter of the Garuda emperor. She entrusted Rodea with her thoughts before evacuating him to safety and vanishing without being seen afterwards.

The former guard wakes up after his long sleep, confused without his memories intact and his right arm completely destroyed. This is where the mecha-curious Ion will help him remember his purpose, along with the events that unfolded in the past.

Additionally, Kadokawa are hosting the “Rodea: The Sky Experience Tour 2015 ~First~” on January 17, 2015, as the game’s first event, where 30 selected winners will get to experience the game’s first playable demo.

Rodea the Sky Soldier will release in Japan on April 2, 2015 for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

Rodea the Sky Soldier video introduces basic actions

Flying and boosting consumes your flight gauge.

Rodea_02-12-15.jpg
Kadokawa Games has released part one of a new series of Rodea the Sky Soldier videos, this one introducing the Wii U flight action game’s basic actions.
Target the direction you want to go and press the A button to fly towards it. Flying consumes your flight gauge, which can be restored mid-flight by collecting Graviton, or by landing on the ground. You can also use techniques like wall kicks to recover your gauge. You can boost with the B button, both during flight or while targeting an enemy. Boosts consume a significant chunk of your gauge. The Y button rises Rodea vertically, and by holding the left stick down and pressing the Y button, you can perform a trample attack. Hold the left stick left or right and pressing the Y button will perform an evasion action.
Rodea the Sky Soldier will launch for Wii U and 3DS on April 2 in Japan. The game will cost 7,200 yen on Wii U and 5,800 yen on 3DS. First-print copies of the Wii U version will include the original, unreleased Wii version, Tenkuu no Kishi Rodea.

How Sonic’s Creator Struggled For Years To Create Rodea the Sky Soldier. February 20, 2015 . 12:32pm

Naka was spending his time doing research and development for a game that would allow you to fly around the skies more freely, and that was when he came across the Wii console.

Kadokawa Games recently hosted the “Rodea: The Sky Experience Tour 2014 ~First~” as the game’s first event for fans to try the game out, and 4Gamer have shared their report on what director Jin Hasegawa and Prope’s Yuji Naka had to say about the title.

The Rodea discussions began with “what thoughts went into the creation of Rodea?” As it turns out, director Hasegawa always wanted to make a game where you can fly, and it’s something he dreamed of doing ever since he was a child. Again, prior to developing Rodea the Sky Soldier, Hasegawa had always been involved in the development of games with violence, so making an all-ages game is something he’s been wanting to do for a while.

It was those two thoughts that prompted the would-be director to meet up with former head of Sonic Team, Yuji Naka, then felt like he might be able to make two of his wishes come true.

The above image reads: “A dream I saw when I was young, ‘a grand adventure on the never-ending skies’.”

During his tenure in his position with Sega, Naka was known for his work as the producer and lead programmer for NiGHTS into Dreams. While he never made a sequel to NiGHTS, which was highly demanded by fans across the globe, Naka said that it was sort of for the same reason that Steven Spielberg never made a sequel to E.T.

“I didn’t want to do anything that could possibly take away from the good that was NiGHTS,” explained Naka. Instead, Naka was spending his time doing research and development for a game that would allow you to fly around the skies more freely; however, making a game that lets you freely fry around in 360 degrees proved to be difficult, even with access to a gyro sensor-equipped controller.

One day, while going about his usual trial-and-errors for finding a way to make something work, Naka came across the Wii. By using the Wii Remote, he felt that he might be able to make a new type of action game that would give you the freedom of flight in 360 degrees. While Naka now had an idea of how to make the game, he still had one obstacle ahead of him: For several years, Naka tried to show his plans to various game companies, but none of them were willing to work with him on it.

It wasn’t until he crossed paths with Kadokawa Games, and they saw the plans for a game where you get to fly the skies, that they responded with “let’s do this together.”

“Our wavelengths matched up perfectly,” Hasegawa added.

From then on, the development of Rodea began… or so it seemed. As it turned out, opinions held by the developers at Prope clashed with those of the publishers. According to Naka, out of the 9 years of existence since the establishment of Prope, they’ve never had as many arguments as they did while working on Rodea.

In the end, though, things worked out and both the publisher and developer were able to come to an agreement, but Naka still remembers all the trouble that went into the making of the game.

Rodea the Sky Soldier is slated for release in Japan on April 2, 2015 for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

Rodea the Sky Soldier
is just a month away from release in Japan, and Kadokawa showed off some basic gameplay in in the latest Nico Nico Live broadcast of Denjin Getcha.

[YT]5yGh5KZlDR0[/YT]
After the wacky intro, the gameplay footage begins at the 8:22 mark of the video, starting with some of the basics with the player learning Rodea’s controls on how to fly around and do other basic actions.

For more details on the controls, you can check out our earlier report. At the 11:50 mark, they show us a little bit of Rodea’s basic attacks, as they rotate through some weapons, and show what it’s like to shoot while in mid-air.

You get a better idea of how the battle works at 12:40, where the player uses the targeting system to take out various enemies in little time, followed by a look at some more flying, which looks reminiscent of the NiGHTS games.

At 19:20, Rodea goes up against a giant enemy for a boss fight. In order to fight these, you’ll need to find their weak spots to take them out. In this fight, it’s located on the monster’s head, but hitting it results in the monster going into a frenzy and changing its looks and weak spots, so it seems like you’ll have to adapt while fighting.

After trying out the game, the Denjin Getcha player exclaimed how his hands got sweaty while playing, and how the controls are smooth and easy to understand, but it’s something that he feels will also require some thinking to go with the action.

Rodea the Sky Soldier will release in Japan on April 2, 2015 for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. The game is also headed West later this fall. You can read more about how Sonic the Hedgehog creator and his struggles that went into making the game a reality, in our previous report.

Wii Version Of Rodea the Sky Soldier To Be Included With First-Print Copies In North America. March 4, 2015 . 11:29am
First-print copies of Rodea the Sky Soldier on Wii U will come with the Wii version of the game.

First-print copies of Rodea the Sky Soldier on Wii U will come with the Wii version of the game, NIS America announced this morning.

Rodea the Sky Soldier is developed by Sonic the Hedgehog creator Yuji Naka. Naka originally teased the game’s existence in an interview with Siliconera all the way back in 2011. Following this, Famitsu reported that the game was in development for the Wii.

Days later, Kadokawa Games announced that they were publishing the game for both the Wii and Nintendo 3DS. At some point, Kadokawa ceased talking about Rodea—likely because the Wii software market was no longer healthy enough to make the game’s release worth their while. Then, last November, they revealed that the game was still alive, and was now coming to the 3DS and Wii U.

In case you’re wondering, the Wii version of Rodea includes a competitive multiplayer mode, which isn’t in either the Wii U or 3DS releases, which actually does make it something of a worthwhile collectible. In Japan, the Wii version is being included with first-print copies of the Wii U version, so NIS America’s scheme is identical to the one Kadokawa are employing in Japan.

Rodea the Sky Soldier will be released in North America this Fall.

Rodea the Sky Soldier Shows More Boss Fights Against The Rival Characters
. April 1, 2015 . 4:40am

Rodea the Sky Soldier’s bosses are more evolved forms of Rodea himself.

Rodea the Sky Soldier
is releasing tomorrow in Japan for the Nintendo 3DS, and Kadokawa Games put together a last trailer that introduces us to the other “Sky Soldiers” of the game, known as the R-Series.

[YT]QbCe7NB2r3Q[/YT]
The video starts out showing bits of action from Rodea, and his aerial combat style. They then introduce the rival villains known as the “R Series” group. The green-haired R-1 is considered to be the Rodea’s evolved form, and uses a defensive barrier. He attacks using giant energy balls, so you’ll need to avoid them, find R-1, and use burst attacks to damage him up.

R-2 refers to Rodea as “R-0”. He was created to specialize in mid-air battles as a high-speed model. He has an even more powerful version of R-1’s barrier that does more damage. R-2 uses a beam that looks like spinning blades, which you’ll need to look out for. You’ll also need to do your best to keep an eye on him, as he’s a speedy one.

Finally, R-3 is the white-haired female Sky Soldier, and she seems to be more of a balanced form with everything from tricky maneuvers to an offense-based barrier to go with speedy beam attacks. She doesn’t leave too many openings, so you’ll need to take advantage of every opportunity you get.

Finally, gameplay part of the video ends with a look at a silhouette of the R-Series’ “perfect form” that appears in front of Rodea.

Rodea the Sky Soldier will release in Japan on April 2, 2015 for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

When asked if the Wii version would have its own case with Wii-branded artwork, a NISA representative responded: “Don’t know yet! We’re still finalizing production things, but I’ll tweet an update when I get one. :)”

Rodea the Sky Soldier details story, characters, and gameplay

Wii U and 3DS flight action game due out late September.

Rodea_06-01-15.jpg

NIS America has released a slew of Rodea the Sky Soldier information, detailing the game’s story, characters, and gameplay.
The Kadokawa Games- and Prope-developed Wii U and 3DS flight action game is due out in North America on September 22 and Europe on September 25.
Get the new details below.
Story
Once upon a time there existed two countries—Naga, the terrestrial machine empire, and Garuda, a floating kingdom in the sky…
Thanks to their advanced technology, the Naga Empire thrives. Seeking the power contained in crystalized Graviton energy, Naga gazes skyward at the neighboring kingdom of Garuda and launches a full-scale invasion.
Princess Cecilia, the daughter of Emperor Geardo, ruler of Naga, attempts to flee to Garuda alongside her robot bodyguard, Rodea. Trapped by her pursuers, she entrusts Rodea with half of the Key of Time—an artifact that is integral to the success of Naga’s invasion. Using the remaining half of the Key’s power, she teleports Rodea to Garuda, depriving Naga of the intact Key of Time, thereby preventing the earthbound aggressor from successfully carrying out its invasion.
Since then 1,000 years have passed, and Garuda’s citizens regard Naga’s failed invasion, as well as the Naga Empire itself, as little more than a historical footnote in the pages of history. At a small village in Garuda, a young woman named Ion lives a peaceful life with her grandfather, where she spends her days tinkering with machines and inventing all sorts of odd gadgets. One day, Ion is surveying an ancient ruin when she discovers a deactivated, broken robot—Rodea. Though Ion repairs the damage to Rodea’s body, the damage to Rodea’s memories is too extensive. He remembers next to nothing about his past, save for his mission to save Garuda, and the face of a young woman who bears a striking resemblance to Ion.
Characters

  • Rodea – A humanoid robot with flight capabilities. He attempted to flee to Garuda alongside Princess Cecilia, but failed. After Princess Cecilia teleports him to safety, he suddenly finds himself waking up 1,000 years in the future thanks to Ion, who recovered his body and repaired him back to full functionality. With this new ally by his side, Rodea takes to the sky to defend Garuda against the Naga Empire once again.

With this new ally by his side, Rodea takes to the sky to defend Garuda against the Naga Empire once again.
  • Princess Cecilia – The pure-hearted princess of the Naga Empire. She fled Naga with Rodea in an attempt to stop her father, Emperor Geardo, from invading Garuda. When that plan fails, she teleports Rodea to safety and is never seen again.
  • Emperor Geardo – Geardo was once a kind father who showered his beloved daughter, Cecilia, with love and affection. It was for her sake and the sake of his empire that he spearheaded Naga’s development into a mechanized civilization. To this end, he has replaced the majority of his physical body with the most powerful technology his empire can produce, further cementing his status as an immeasurably legendary ruler.
Soaring Across Garuda
Rodea is equipped with a gravity manipulation device that allows him to fly. This device is fueled by Graviton energy, which is restored simply by landing on the ground. It can also be restored by collecting Graviton crystals, or by destroying certain objects.
Gravitons
Gravitons are not only used to restore flight energy, but they also serve as directional guides for reaching the goal in the shortest amount of time. Follow the trail of Gravitons if you’re not sure which direction to go in a stage.
Collect a row of Gravitons. Locate and collect the next row of Gravitons without landing, and you’ll receive a CHAIN bonus!
Flight Basics
The flight energy gauge inside the reticle will slowly diminish as Rodea stays airborne. If the gauge reaches 0 and there’s no landing spot beneath Rodea, he will lose one spare part (life) and restart from the most recent save point.
Flight energy can be restored by the following methods:

  • Collecting Gravitons
  • Landing
  • Kicking / Charging a wall
Basic Attack Actions
Aim at a target and press the A Button to enter flight mode. Move the control stick to arc your flight trajectory.
Press the B Button to use a Boost Attack… If once doesn’t work, attack the enemy multiple times!

Rodea the Sky Soldier Impressions: Take Your Time Learning To Fly. June 5, 2015 . 12:28pm

I felt some influences from some of Yuji Naka’s previous games while playing Rodea the Sky Soldier.

Prope’s Rodea the Sky Soldier has been a long time coming. Announced back in 2011, it only saw its Japanese release earlier this year, with the western release coming later this Autumn. I recently played an early stage of the game on both Wii U and 3DS, and while I can’t speak for the whole game, from what I played, both versions seemed identical in terms of content,

The only major difference appears to be that the Wii U version is the better looking of the two. Controls were similar for the most part, since you’re mainly controlling Rodea via the touch screens on both platforms.

I felt some influences from some of Yuji Naka’s previous games while playing. The homing attack feels like it did in Sonic. The green natural world and flying around, speeding through objects felt a lot like Nights. But despite these Sega influences, the greatest sense of familiarity came from my experiences with Gravity Rush—only you’re actually flying through the air, not changing your centre of gravity.

Unfortunately, the controls didn’t feel intuitive and were hard to grasp. I felt like I was working against them for the most part. Using the touch screen, you set a direction to head in and while you’re on course you can move the camera around to change your course or target enemies. A button press lets you take off and stop, but I often found myself falling out of the sky and unable to take off again. That said, I feel given more time with the game, I’d be able to get used to the flying controls. As I was nearing the end of the levels, I felt myself become more stable with the flying controls and I was able to freely roam the level.

Not all action takes place in the sky, though. Levels have a mixture of sky battles and land battles. In the level I played, the land battles had smaller enemies that I could use the homing attack to quickly take them out and switch targets. There is also some effort put into providing replayability with the ability to replay levels to collect everything and improve your score.

While I felt a bit disappointed and confused at first, the more I saw of Rodea, the more I adjusted to its way of doing things and enjoyed it. I’m also left keen to try out the original Wii version of the game that used pointer controls to direct Rodea around.
