House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 8 - "The Queen Who Ever Was"

Directed by Geeta Vasant Patel

Written by Sara Hess

Well, here we are at the season two finale. This season kinda flew by. I haven't seen any of the leaks save for one plot point but I'm hoping it sticks the landing.

Immediate thoughts: As an episode it was good but as a finale it was weak. It's pretty clear now that this season should have been 10 episodes. This felt like if they ended Game of Thrones Season 6 on the eighth episode and saved the Battle of the Bastards and The Winds of Winter for the beginning of the following season.

Also, why was Otto in a cage at the end? Huh?

Episodes 7 and 8 should've switched places, I think. This finale felt more like the penultimate episode, at least until the last few minutes, with all of the chess pieces being moved into place for the third season.

Also, that mud fight? Exactly what Tormund wanted to do with Brienne for sure.

Yeah I cussed loudly when it went off. That is not a finale. And now we gotta wait two more years? Ugh.

That said. Loved the Daemon visions scene but with what happens to Dany and even the war with the night king being underwhelming it was a bitter sweet fast forward.

As a book reader, in my mind the pacing is just right . . . . . buuuuutttttt HBO should've thrown in the money for 2 more episodes. This is right where I like the show to be for the 8th episode, I just selfishly wish they gave us a big episode 9 and 10 to really make it a satisfying payoff. Instead we're blue balled while we wait for the next season.

This was one of the weakest season finale’s in recent memory. I couldnt believe the episode just …ended the way it did. For a season finale i felt no sense of urgency and escalation in the scenes like i would think a climax would.

I enjoyed the episode in itself but as a finale its just not nearly as satisfying as the Season 1 finale. When I heard about all the leaks that happened earlier this week, I knew some people were really going to be disappointed with this episode but honestly I figured they blew most of their budget on episodes 4 and 7.

Here's to hoping HBO gets all the money they need for the next season though because it sounds like stuff only gets crazier from here in terms of BIG battles which is going to be super expensive.

All that being said I can definitely say that after these last two episodes I'm really looking forward to seeing what they do with Ulf and Hugh down the line since I really like them as new additions.

Gwayne is another new character that I ended up really liking this season especially after his scene with Christian Cole and while it was a bit fanservicey the Daemon vision stuff was pretty cool.

Also, I know it didn't make a whole lot of logical sense and ended up being very anticlimactic, but I actually really liked the acting in the last scene between Rhaenyra and Alicent.

Great performances from both Darcy and Cooke.

There wasn't a whole lot that I didn't like from this episode, apart from it not being a sufficient finale. I should have known by the amount of time we spent with Temu Kenneth Branagh Lannister mud wrestling in Essos that we weren't going to get a big explosive finale. :o

But leaving out the fact that this didn't feel like a season finale, I did like it.

I really got a kick out of Daemon coming to his senses thanks to a weirwood binge of the entire series of GOT. I did like his inspiring speech too.

Helaena was also an MVP this episode and I really hope they bring her to the forefront in season 3 now that Aegon has gone into hiding.

I also liked that Alyn was finally given something interesting to do in the scene where he lets Corlys have it.

Was it just me or did Ulf feel like a completely different character in this episode? It's like they flipped a switch and made him an arrogant d***.

As much as I love seeing Emma D'Arcy and Olivia Cooke act with each other (because they both killed it last night), one does have to question why Alicent is even bothering sneaking off to Dragonstone when she could use those resources to escape King's Landing and maybe Westeros altogether with Helaena and her granddaughter. I get that she doesn't want any further bloodshed but at this point it's beyond inevitable.

Apart from the mystery of how Otto got locked up (a waste of an appearance for Rhys Ifans but good for him for collecting that paycheck), did I miss something or was it blatantly revealed that Gwayne knew that Cole was sleeping with Alicent? He's no idiot so I'm sure he had his suspicions but to blatantly threaten Cole like that in front of their men made it seem like there was some big offscreen reveal. As far as I can tell, the only people who definitely knew were Helaena who's kept it to herself anyway, the Grand Maester (since he gave Alicent the moon tea) and I assume Larys since he pretty much has dirt on everyone.

Overall I liked season two a lot and would consider it to be among the best shows of 2024 but there's a big difference between the first half of the season and the latter half where the pacing issues started. Had they gone all out and given us two more epic episodes then I might have put it up there with the first season.

Not going into book spoilers but there are two big events that happen at around this point in the story that would have made for an excellent episode 9 and 10 this season but for reasons, HBO was stingy with the budget even though this is a cash cow franchise.

Oh well, at least season 3 should be epic but it just sucks that we'll have to wait another two years or so. If it were only a year long wait (you know, like how shows USED to be) then it wouldn't sting as much.

This felt like a true episode 8 where it leads us to an epic episode 9... so that was a bit unfortunate.

The episode overall was pretty good and the overall theme of them second-guessing their place in the world was done well.

It's like I said, imagine if GOT S6 ended with this:

And then we had to wait two years to get the Battle of the Bastards, Cersei blowing up the Sept, the Jon reveal, Daenerys going to Westeros, etc.

He may have had nothing to do with it and he's too popular a whipping boy, but I would not at all be surprised if we learned David Zaslav wanted HOTD to not do an episode 9 and 10 because he wanted to save the money.

Regardless, unless they really stretch things out, the budget for Season 3 is going to be massive.

I waited for season 2 to get to its last episode. So I spent the last week rewatching season 1 and watched all 7 episodes of season 2, to get ready for the finale. It really was a disappointment. It lead to nothing. There was no payoff in the last episode. It should've ended with the battle at the gullet.

The only real payoff we got in this was that Daemon finally stopped fooling around which gave us this hilarious screenshot:

Phia Saban has definitely been underutilized in this show so far but at least they gave her a BIG moment in this episode, which was awesome, but I want to see a lot more of her going forward.

I get that they are going for more of a child like innocence with her character, but I feel like she was sidelined way too much this season which is shame because she's a pretty interesting character IMO.

Oh well I still thought this was a great season for the most part.

Totally agreed. Part of the problem is the source material because she's got even less to do in the book but this is a promising start. I have a feeling that we'll at least see her flying around on Dreamfyre next season, for better or worse.

@Drizzle I couldn't be more sure. It left me thoroughly satisfied. Different strokes for different folks I guess.
I liked the episode myself but as a finale I was disappointed. I was just curious because it seems even the staunchest fans of the show feel like there should have been more, at least what I'm seeing online.

My personal problem wasnt even a lack of ACTION per se. I just felt like this episode was a collection of meandering dialogue with no momentum or agency to them. Dialogue can and should be as engaging as action, but i felt so bored through all of these exposition scenes. You could literally FEEL they were buying time to fill the runtime up.

It pretty much ended the way I expected. Everyone heading towards war, but the war not being started, seems like the proper cliff hanger for a season ender.
