I think it would be interesting to compare two recent kid superhero movies. They're definitely not rip-offs of each other and absolutely cover different themes, but they both also embrace the idea of a superhero kid loving his powers along with a funny sidekick. I think they're both movies that are ripe for younger audiences to connect with on a relatable level.

Now, where's that Michael Jackson 'eating popcorn' gif.....

Shazam. Not even a question.

I gotta see Shazam soon, I've heard good things like it being further from the standard modern fare which is nice. I have a feeling I might like it more than Homecoming.

Shazam is a fully self contained movie. Homecoming is an episode of a sprawling theatrical TV series. You can’t really compare, because they fundamentally come from very different narrative places. If you’re going to compare Shazam with a Spider-man film, it should be Raimi’s first movie.

Shazam has more flaws but at the same time more heart. Homecoming is a very good movie but in the end I just feel like it lack a purpose.

Billy Batson is 15 year old in Shazam, how old was Peter Parker in Spider-Man Homecoming ? I think he was older than 15, right ? That would change the way story is approached, so the sequel to Shazam might provide a better comparison (if we get a sequel in next 2 years) with Spider-man Homecoming as both Billy and Peter would be in a comparable age group.

I don’t agree with that at all. Movies are movies. There are special circumstances that surround Homecoming, but it can and should be judged just like any other.

Hmmm. I liked both films quite a bit and the lead characters in each are great. I'd probably say Billy and Peter are about even. Both films have a lot of heart, but Shazam probably has more. Homecoming clearly wins in terms of action sequences, and Keaton's villain is better than Strong's. Freddie is a better sidekick than Ned, but Tony Stark easily edges out any of Shazam's supporting cast members. Aunt May is better than Billy's foster parents. Neither film has a particularly great score (though neither one is bad). The bullies in Shazam and Homecoming's Flash Thompson are equally insufferable (and not in the way their intended to be). I don't know. I'd probably say the films are dead even for me.

Shazam. This shouldn't even be a debate, if you ask me.

a better debate would be Shazam vs Spider-Man (2002) in which case I'd have to go with Spider-Man (2002)

Peter is 15 in Homecoming.

I think I like Shazam! more but Homecoming is the better film. I need to watch Spider-Man again though.

Homecoming.

But I am being slightly biased here as I like the Spider-Man lore more than Shazam's. As movies they're equal footing for me as good movies.

Really!?

That’s the difference I guess in casting an actual 15 year old as opposed to a 20 year old playing a 15 year old.

Holland did go undercover to an actual high-school for a few days and no one there could tell that he was older, so I don't think it matters that much.

Yeah he states his age to Stark after the ferry incident. And he only would’ve recently turned 15 as his birthday is in August and the movie takes place in September. So he’s technically 14 in Civil War.

Funnily enough, I had no idea Billy was supposed to be 15, I must’ve missed that when they said that. I just assumed he was slightly younger than that.

I thought Billy was 14.

And if Peter was actually only 14 during CW...****ing yikes.

MMMMmmm that new movie smell. Homecoming is the better movie... heart be damned.

Shazam wins this particular competition for me.

(Says the die hard Spider-Man fan who really digs the MCU Spidey.)
