Shovel Knight Sells 180,000 In First Month, 60% Of Sales On Nintendo Platforms. August 6, 2014 . 8:58am

Yacht Club Games have provided a detailed breakdown of the sales numbers and budget for Shovel Knight
Yacht Club Games have provided a detailed breakdown of the sales numbers and budget for Shovel Knight. In addition to the sales figures, there’s a lot of other interesting info to wade through as well. That said, let’s begin with the sales.

In its first week, Shovel Knight sold approximately 75,000 copies. A month after release (June 26th – July 26th), it had sold roughly 180,000 copies. As the pie chart above indicates, Nintendo platforms accounted for the majority of sales.

The 75,000 copies sold during the first week was actually beyond Yacht Club’s expectations, they developer says. Shovel Knight had 15,684 backers on Kickstarter, and other developers that have used the crowdfunding platform estimate that first-week sales of a game are generally 2-4 times the number of Kickstarter backers. In the case of Shovel Knight, this would be 30,000 – 60,000 copies, but instead, it sold 75k.

Additionally, Yacht Club point out that 64% of the game’s Kickstarter funds came from PC backers, with Nintendo backers only providing 36% of the support. However, once the game was actually released, Shovel Knight sold more on the Nintendo platforms than it did on PC (indicated in the pie chart above).

“We think due to the PC nature of Kickstarter, we saw a higher amount of sales on Nintendo’s platform when the game actually got released,” Yacht Club wrote in their breakdown analysis. “Nintendo users are more inclined to buy the game day one rather than through a preorder on Kickstarter.”

Shovel Knight hit the #1 spot on the Nintendo eShop for 3DS, the #2 spot (behind Mario Kart 8 and its free game promotion) for Wii U, and was also among the top 10 games on Steam, despite launching in the middle of the Steam Summer Sale, when a whole bunch of other games were being sold at discounted rates.

While Yacht Club are happy with the game’s sales, they point out that getting to this stage was far from easy. In their breakdown, they go into great depth about the game’s development budget and reveal that for five whole months during development, none of the team’s six members was being paid because they ran out of funding when they decided to delay the game by a couple of months for further polish. You can read the full sales breakdown on this page.

Shovel Knight is currently available internationally on Steam, but launches in Europe, Australia and other territories on the Nintendo devices are still pending. Getting the game to those regions, along with fulfilling the game’s stretch-goals, are part of Yacht Club’s immediate plans for the future.

Shovel Knight Sold Best On Windows PCs And Nintendo 3DS. September 28, 2015 . 12:09pm

Shovel Knight struck gold on Windows PCs and the Nintendo 3DS.

Last week at Gaming Insiders, Capybara Games’ Nathan Vella revealed sales information discussing how various games from independent developers have performed on various platforms. One of the titles was Yacht Club Games’ Shovel Knight, which is set to be the first indie game with amiibo support. Such a move is easier to understand why, considering the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Wii U both had strong sales performances for the game.

Shovel Knight performed best on Windows PCs, with 32% of people playing it via Steam. However, 30% of people played it on the Nintendo 3DS, and 20% of the audience came from Nintedno Wii U owners. Vella went on to say that, “Shovel Knight broke the impression that indies don’t sell so well on Nintendo…” To compare, 14% of Shovel Knight players used a Sony platform, and only 4% of people were playing it on a Xbox console.

Vella also presented sales figures for various Capy Games’ titles and Double Fine’s Broken Age. Sword & Sworcery was most played on iOS devices, with 50% of its audience there, 44% of Super Time Force Ultra players were on a Xbox 360 or Xbox One, and Broken Age saw its largest audience on the Windows PC, with 61% of people heading to a computer to play.

Physical copies of Shovel Knight will appear on store shelves for the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Wii U, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on October 13, 2015. The Shovel Knight amiibo has a 2015 release window.

Understandable that Shovel Knight sold so well on those platforms. It looks better on 3DS than it does on my Wii U, though that's not to say it looks bad on Wii U by any means.

so is Shovel Knight a digital only game?

I've heard so many good things about this, I'd like to check it out.

Shovel Knight Xbox One physical release cancelled

PS4, Wii U, and 3DS price updated; strides for PS Vita version.

Shovel-Knight-XB1-Retail-Cancelled.jpg

Yacht Club Games has cancelled the retail version of Shovel Knight for Xbox One, the developer announced. It will now only be available physically for PlayStation 4, Wii U, and 3DS.

“We really gave it our best effort, but unfortunately, because of publishing policies on that platform that are totally beyond our control, we couldn’t make it happen,” Yacht Club Games explained. “We’re very sorry…we know there is a lot of interest – the pre-orders were really good and we thank everyone for their support!”

The studio also said it’s ‘working its hardest’ to make a PS Vita retail version possible, though if it happens it won’t be coming this holiday.
Additionally, the publisher announced a price change for the retail version. It’s been raised from $19.99 to $24.99.

“Although everyone initially agreed to a $19.99 price point, some retailers ran into trouble with limited space to show off their wares, and the rules in place about where games with certain prices are displayed. We didn’t want our ‘bargain priced’ game to go straight to the bargain bin of obscurity, so we had to raise the price.”

If you pre-ordered Shovel Knight at $19.99, your retailer should honor the original price, however.

Finally, Yacht Club Games confirmed that all physical copies of the game will include a free download of the original soundtrack.

“We know this is a bit redundant, as the soundtrack is ‘pay what you want’ online, but this provides a guilt free way to formally obtain the full, high-quality version of the soundtrack for free!”

Best Buy Now Has A Shovel Knight amiibo Listing. November 5, 2015 . 10:00am

Best Buy’s Shovel Knight amiibo product page is online and offers a possible December release date.

Yacht Club Games’ Shovel Knight amiibo will be the first third party NFC figure in the line. While it has a November 27 release date in Europe, North America has yet to receive any confirmation about the collectible. However, Best Buy has become the first domestic retailer with a listing.
Best Buy prices the Shovel Knight amiibo at $12.99, the standard price for the figures. It also offers a December 18 release date. This has yet to be confirmed by the developer. Pre-orders are not yet available.

Using the amiibo in-game unlocks challenge levels in both the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Wii U versions. There will also be cosmetic options in both. In addition, the figure is the only way to unlock cooperative multiplayer in the console iteration.

Physical copies of Shovel Knight for the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Wii U, and PlayStation 4 are now available in-stores.

Shovel Knight amiibo Digs Into Europe Next Week, Surfaces In North America In January. December 3, 2015 . 6:30pm

The Shovel Knight amiibo will be released first in Europe, before appearing a month later in North America. This is help avoid supply issues.

Yacht Club Games has revealed the release date for the Shovel Knight amiibo. The NFC figure, which is the third being made by a third party for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, will help people dig themselves out of trouble in Europe starting December 11. North America will have to wait a month more, as he’ll be released here on January 8.

An explanation for the staggered release dates was offered by Yacht Club Games. The developer wanted to ensure enough Shovel Knight amiibo would be available to satisfy demand. It would have been possible to release him before Christmas, but it would have been a smaller amount than they would have liked. So there was a slight delay to make sure there would be plenty.

The amiibo unlocks additional modes, customization options, and bonuses in both the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U versions of Shovel Knight. In both games, you can level him up to 50, change his appearance, get new relics for additional abilities, and go through more Challenge stages. The Nintendo Wii U version also adds cooperative multiplayer to the formerly single player campaign and coop Challenge stages.

Yacht Club Games confirmed that there won’t be a limited run of Shovel Knight amiibo. The figure will cost $12.99, €14.99, or £10.99, depending on region.

Shovel Knight amiibo Can Be Read Through Its Box. January 8, 2016 . 12:00pm

People who like to keep their amiibo pristine will be able to use the Shovel Knight amiibo without taking him out of the box.

Some NFC figure collectors like to leave them in their protective packaging. This isn’t a problem for the Skylanders series, since they can be read through the boxes. However, Nintendo places a protective piece of material underneath every amiibo, which means someone must open or carefully tear through the box if they want to use it without opening it. That isn’t an issue with the Shovel Knight amiibo.

Yacht Club Games did not include the protective material. This means the amiibo can be held, in box, over the Nintendo Wii U Gamepad or Nintendo New 3DS touchscreen and read. A friend of mine told me he was able to do so with his, so I tried it for myself. While it is a bit cumbersome, especially on a New 3DS XL, it does work.

The Shovel Knight amiibo is immediately available for $12.99. It currently only works with both the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Wii U versions of Shovel Knight. As an availability advisory, the GameStop near my home only received three figures.

EP Daily Rundown for June 22, 2016

Today in the Rundown, we dig up the latest on Shovel Knight, have some bad news for fans of the Burnout series, get new details on the future of the Indiana Jones and Star Wars franchises, take a look at the new Jack Reacher movie with Tom
Cruise, examine a new update for Grand Theft Auto Online, and finally, say the name of the latest actor to join the big screen Power Rangers movie.

Loads of new content is being dug up for the retro side-scroller Shovel Knight. Developer Yacht Club Games has announced that they’re working on two new story campaigns for the game.
Like last year’s Plague of Shadows, which focused on the villainous Plague Knight, the two new campaigns will let players take control of two villains from the main game: the ghost-like Specter Knight and the pompous King Knight. Each one will come with unique moves, abilities, and weapons that help distinguish the gameplay from what you got out of the original Shovel Knight. Both of the campaigns will also come with new feats, challenges, and modes, and best of all, they’ll be free for anyone who’s already bought the main game. The Spectre Knight campaign will be released first,

although a launch window has yet to be named.
It looks like the new racing game from Criterion Games has crashed and burned. The Burnout developer had been working on an untitled open-world racing game, which was announced at E3 2014 and would have allowed players to race in a wide variety of extreme sports vehicles. There’s been little mention of the game since then, and now, it looks like it’s been cancelled. Speaking with GameSpot, an unnamed EA representative has revealed that Criterion Games has moved on from the project, and they’re no longer pursuing it. No reason for the has been given cancellation, and in retrospect, it seems it was a bit silly for EA to have publicly announced a project that was so early in development and still subject to being canned. Criterion Games is currently busy assisting other EA studios on games like Battlefield and the upcoming Battlefront VR experience. Given how awesome their Burnout series was, hopefully they’ll get back into the racing genre at some point in the future.
It looks like we can expect plenty more adventures from the world’s most famous archaeologist. Disney plans to continue the Indiana Jones franchise after the upcoming fifth film is released in Summer 2019. That’s according to Disney CEO Bob Iger, who tells The Hollywood Reporter that the new movie will be followed by “a continuum and then a reboot of some sort.” Those words are a little cryptic so it’s unclear exactly what audiences can expect; that could mean more movies with Harrison Ford, or a continuation of the same series with a younger character, or a complete reboot with a new and younger actor in the role of Indy. Either way, it’s good to know that Disney has long-term plans for the character. A reboot with a new actor seems inevitable at some point given that Harrison Ford will be 77 years old when the fifth movie arrives in 2019.
Over to the other big franchise that Disney bought from Lucasfilm. In the same interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bob Iger says that he’s already seen the Star Wars spinoff movie Rogue One, and he thinks it’s going to be a fine film. Of course he’s going to say that regardless, but this should come as some relief for anyone who might be nervous about the rumoured problems with the film. Reshoots are currently underway, but almost all of the other Star Wars movies have had reshoots as well, so there’s no reason to have a bad feeling about this. Rogue One takes place before the events of the original Star Wars film, focusing on the Rebels who stole the Death Star plans. The Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Vader himself will appear in the movie, according to the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, and other classic characters might also appear given the period that it takes place. Fingers crossed for a Jar Jar cameo.

Grand Theft Auto Online players can start feeling like superheroes thanks to the latest update. Rockstar Games has released a new PvP mode for the game called Power Play. It has power-ups scattered throughout the map that give you and your team new, superhero-style abilities like super jump, invinsibility, superhuman strength, and the power to slow down time. Unfortunately you won’t be able to use the new power-ups in the regular GTA Online freemode, although there are similar mods for single-player on the PC. Expect more new content for GTA Online in the coming months.

The Power Rangers are going up against the one who knocks… again. Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston has joined the cast of the new big screen Power Rangers movie. He’ll play Zordon, the mentor of the Power Rangers who mostly appears as a floating head, kind of like the Wizard of Oz meets Master Splinter. This won’t be Cranston’s first time in the Power Rangers universe. Back in the early 90s, before he was famous, he voiced two different characters in the English-language version of the TV series. Hopefully the new movie will be a lot less cheesy, or a lot more depending on your sensibilities. It hits theatres in 2017

Shovel Knight’s Specter Of Torment Designed To Be A Standalone Experience. December 2, 2016 . 10:30am

Shovel Knight’s Specter Knight campaign, Specter of Torment, will arrive in spring 2017.

6 comments Read >

When it comes to Shovel Knight, Yacht Club Games promised fans three free updates. Each one would follow one of the Knights of the Order of No Quarter. We’d already seen the Plague of Shadows expansion, which followed Plague Knight, and knew Specter Knight and King Knight expansions would follow. At The Game Awards 2016, we learned Specter Knight’s Specter of Torment would be the second campaign and arrive in spring 2017.

In Shovel Knight’s Specter of Torment, players get to follow Specter Knight before the events of the main game. The Enchantress has tasked him with founding her Order of No Quarter. His storyline involves all new areas, bosses, enemies, equipment, music, objects, and strategies for boss knights. Yacht Club notes it is creating this prequel expansion in such a way that it could act as a standalone experience.
