"Prisoners" Helmer Looks Into "Sicario"

By Garth Franklin Saturday December 7th 2013 09:33AM
"Prisoners" director Denis Villeneuve is circling the Taylor Sheridan-scripted drama feature "Sicario" at Thunder Road and Black Label.
The story deals with a murky legal loophole that allows mercenaries to cross into Mexico to corral drug kingpins, as long as they are accompanied by a legitimate law officer.
In this film, said officer is a Tucson female cop who is joining two delta force-type rangers trying to apprehend a drug lord. Once across, she encounters violence and depravity like she never imagined.
Basil Iwanyk, Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill and Thad Luckinbill will likely produce.

Thrilled that Prisoners paid off, things are looking up for Villeneuve now.

Haven't read the script yet but apparently it's really, really good. I'm all for Blunt being a bigger star than she is right now. I've loved her since The Devil Wears Prada.

Emily Blunt is in talks to star in the thriller “Sicario,” which will be “Prisoners” helmer Denis Villeneuve’s next pic.

Basil Iwanyk, Thad and Trent Luckinbill and Edward McDonnell are set to produce.

Story follows an officer from Tucson, Arizona who travels across the border to Mexico with a pair of mercenaries to track down a drug lord.

Taylor Sheridan penned the script.

Villeneuve will film later this summer, and then follow that up with the sci-fi pic “Story of Your Life,” which has Amy Adams in early talks to star. That will shoot in early 2015.

Blunt has two tentpole pics set to bow this year with Warner Bros: “The Edge of Tomorrow,” also starring Tom Cruise, bowing on June 6, and Disney’s “Into the Woods,” premiering on Christmas Day.

She is repped by CAA.

The director and leading Lady have me interested in this, I'm guessing the basic sounding story will have some twists to the concept.

Emily Blunt to Headline Crime Thriller Sicario

April 2, 2014

Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, Looper) is set to headline director Denis Villeneuve's (Incendies, Prisoners) next feature, a crime thriller titled Sicario, Variety reports.

Sicario (the Spanish word for "hitman"), was written by actor/scribe Taylor Sheridan and follows an Arizona police officer who heads across the Mexican border to take down a drug lord.

Villeneuve has been very busy as of late. He immediately followed Prisoners with Enemy, starring Melanie Laurent and, in dual roles, Jake Gyllenhaal. He'll shoot Sicario before tackling the sci-fi tale Story of Your Life which, earlier today, named Amy Adams as its lead. Blunt, meanwhile, can be seen coming up in Doug Liman's Edge of Tomorrow and Rob Marshall's Into the Woods.

Black Label Media's Basil Iwanyk, Molly Smith and Thad and Trent Luckinbill will produce Sicario alongside Edward McDonnell.

Benicio del Toro May Join Emily Blunt in Sicario

This week's news that French-Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Enemy) has cast the female leads for his next two films, Sicario and Story of Your Life--Emily Blunt and Amy Adams, respectively--may have had some wondering which movie might happen first.

Now word comes from Variety that Benicio Del Toro is in talks to co-star with Blunt in the crime-thriller Sicario (which literally means "hitman" in Spanish), making one think that film might go into production first. Written by TV actor Taylor Sheridan ("Sons of Anarchy"), the movie is about an Arizona police officer who travels to Mexico with a pair of mercenaries to track down a drug lord.

The story doesn't make clear which character Del Toro might play in Villeneuve's film, although he will be seen playing a very famous drug lord, Colombia's Pablo Escobar, in the upcoming Paradise Lost, as well as appearing in Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy and Paul Thomas Anderson's new movie Inherent Vice later this year.

Sicario will be produced by Basil Iwanyk, Thad and Trent Luckinbill and Molly Smith through their Black Label Media banner, and Edward McDonnell.

Deakins To Film "Sicario" & "Caesar" Next?

By Garth Franklin Sunday May 25th 2014 01:08PM
One cinematographer who has built a fan base all his own over the years is Rodger Deakins. It's no surprise though considering Deakins has been responsible for the stunning visual looks of films like "Skyfall," "Prisoners," "The Assassination of Jesse James," "Jarhead," and much of the output of the Coen brothers.
He recently wrapped Angelina Jolie's WW2 tale "Unbroken," and many are now curious as to what he's doing next. Asked that very question by fans on his website's message boards, Deakins revealed his next two assignments.
The first is a re-teaming with "Prisoners" director Denis Villeneuve, the pair are prepping "Sicario" which deals with an Arizona cop (Emily Blunt) who travels across the border to Mexico with a pair of Delta Force rangers turned mercenaries to track down a drug lord. That film shoots later this summer.
The second? "I hope to be working with the Coen Brothers later in the year." That project he's referring to is likely their proposed "Hail Caesar". Deakins also dismissed the rumor that the Coen brothers will shoot the film in digital for the first time, saying "Don't believe everything you hear."

Josh Brolin is joining Emily Blunt and Benicio del Toro in Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve's upcoming thriller Sicario, reports Variety.

In the film, an officer from Tucson, Arizona travels to Mexico with a pair of mercenaries to track down a drug lord.

Basil Iwanyk will produce the film, along with Thad and Trent Luckinbill and Molly Smith through their Black Label Media banner, as well as Edward McDonnell.

The script was written by Taylor Sheridan.

Big day in news for Brolin with his Thanos casting plus this. Happy to see Brolin in some good roles seeing as he's been in a slump success wise recently in the theaters.

Jeffrey Donovan has joined the cast of Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario, which is filming in New Mexico. In the Lionsgate actioner starring Benecio Del Toro and Emily Blunt, he will play Steve Forsing, a no-nonsense DEA Agent who engages in an all-out firefight at the Juarez border while transferring a prisoner. Donovan starred on USA Network’s Burn Notice, which wrapped its seven-season run in September. His credits also include the upcoming feature Welcome To Harmony as well as J. Edgar, Changeling and Hindsight. He is repped by WME, 3 Arts Entertainment, and Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum Matlof & Fishman

Denis Villeneuve's 'Sicario' has been rated R for strong violence, grisly images & language.

I hope we get a trailer soon.

Should be soon-ish.

Do you know when it's being released? Checked IMDB and all it say's 2015.

Not sure when but I just assumed this year since it's already been screen tested. That rating is a promising sign that it's ready. :awesome:

Lionsgate has set a September 18 limited-release date for Sicario, the drug-runner drama from director Denis Villenueve (Prisoners). The mini-major will follow with a wide release a week later. Emily Blunt stars as an idealistic FBI agent who is exposed to the brutal world of international drug trafficking by members of a government task force (Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro) who have enlisted her in their plan to take out a Mexican cartel boss. Jon Bernthal co-stars.

Taylor Sheridan wrote Sicario, which will go wide on September 25 against three new openers: Relativity horror pic The Disappoints Room, Sony toon sequel Hotel Transylvania 2 and the New Line comedy The Intern.

Wooohooooooooo! Can't wait.

A while back I heard this could even be Oscar baity but a September release probably means that's not the case.

Apparently, the test screening reports were very positive and Del Toro is the MVP.
