Sicario

Watched this today. It was enjoyable but doesn’t compare to the first movie.

One question,
what happened at the very end? Was he about to mull
That kid or make him work for him?

Thanks.

Based on his last bit of dialogue by Alejandro
he would be training him to become a hitman.

I am actually rather sad they left the first film's best character out of the sequel.
I was a bit upset at first that this was made without Emily Blunt but from a story standpoint her character does not make sense at all in this. Even Taylor said he was struggling to figure out a way to work her character in when he and the director then decided to not put her in. It would’ve felt forced it she was in this one.

I just watched this and I thought it was pretty damn good. Didn’t have the same feel as the first which is fine. Sequels aren’t meant to just rehash the first film. I liked the relationship between Benicio and the young girl. It was well done.

I am not seeing this until it comes out on home video, so I won't know for sure. But something that seems to come out in reviews and even reading the writer and director, they didn't really have a good sequel idea. They had a very standard sequel idea. They moved away from the nuance of the first film, and took it in a more obvious action film direction, with a bunch of bad people doing bad things, and thus some becoming the "good guy", with more guns and explosions. Which is kind of the opposite message of the first film. The people doing this stuff, are not good people, no matter the actions of the others.

You can definitely make a sequel to Sicario with Blunt. The reason she isn't there is the decisions they decided to make with the direction of the second film. The movie just sounds... well blunt, grim, and mean spirited. Like they removed the stuff that made the first film thoughtful.

I saw this yesterday, and compared to the first film I thought it was awful. Kate was way too compelling of a character to leave out, and I normally would've argued Alejandro was a strong enough character to carry it himself but his interactions with Matt and Isabel are nowhere near as interesting as they were with Kate. And I never really bought
his motivation for keeping Isabel alive. It seemed forced.

The most egregious thing about this was the side story and the teaser at the end for yet another sequel. Not only was that side story boring as hell, I give less than a damn about the character surrounding it. Sheridan really phoned all of this in.

I'm about to go look for some Sicario fan fiction, there's probably a better sequel out there somewhere. :funny:

I could think of a few ways to bring Kate back that would make sense (imo).

I think that the problem is, while expanding on Matt and Alejandro's characters is interesting in theory, in practice it becomes clear why them being so shadowy and cryptic in the first film worked so well. Because, things get less interesting here, and the movie feels more generic.

Not awful mind you, just more generic.

What was his motivation? A lot of the movie didn't make much sense to me.

I was definitely in the camp of thinking it didn’t require a sequel. And the trailers didn’t hook me in at all. No Denis, Deakins or Johansson (RIP) definitely hurts it’s chances from the start.

Maybe it’s because I love the characters from the first, because I really liked it despite all the flaws and story problems it had. Only wish Alejandro woulda did some more dirty work like the end of the first film.

Will definitely watch the third film if it happens.

I liked it too. Definitely not as good as the first, but still compelling all the way through. I will say though, I absolutely believe that Reddit post about them messing with Sheridan's 3rd act, because certain resolutions there didn't feel organic to me. But yes, I would watch a 3rd one if they go there. This world and characters are endlessly fascinating to me.

Soldado was decent but a huge step down from the first one. Also the magic of and mystique of someone like Alejandro is gone although I get hi arc in this movie.

What's this about the 3rd act? Could you fill me in please.

A few days ago Man in the Suit posted something from Reddit about the director and producers rewriting Sheridan's script, mainly in the 3rd act. Here's what that Reddit user said:
I saw this movie at a pre-screening followed by a Q&A with the Director and Producer of the movie.

What a lot of people suspect here is 100% correct per the Director’s and Producer’s own admission. They changed Taylor’s first draft of the script significantly, specifically the third act. In my opinion, this definitely shows. The movie was not in line with Taylor’s other epic screen plays, and it felt like the third act was completely missing.

If I recall the details of the changes correctly (which btw they were very proud of), they said Taylor’s original script had the third act culminate with BDTs character searching out the cartel boss, and continuing his rampage from the first movie. Instead, the Director determined the focus should be on character development. So the focus was shifted to BDTs relationship with the girl’s character, and they completely rewrote the ending.

The Director also did not see the relationship between JB’s and BDT’s characters as a friendship. He wanted to have them face off and go head to head in the movie instead of working together, resulting in the strange way JB’s character made the phone call to BDT to basically tell him they are enemies now. They also apparently took out significant storylines related to the terrorists, and instead resolved that storyline by saying the terrorists were actually US citizens.

If anyone has any leads, I would love to get a chance to read the original script. I have faith that Taylor’s original ending was much true to the story and the characters.

Thank you for this, what a shame...

Sollima Not Returning For “Sicario 3”

“Sicario” filmmaker Denis Villeneuve handed over the director’s chair of its sequel “Soldado” to Stefano Sollima after having to opt out due to his “Blade Runner 2049” commitments.
The results are visible in the film which is visually and atmospherically not on the same level as the first film, nevertheless, it is a taut, muscular and smart thriller which Sollima pulls off with a solid hand. With talk now turning to a possible third instalment, the obvious question arises as to who will helm.
Villeneuve has expressed a desire to return, but his commitments to his two-film adaptation of “Dune” may prevent it. Would Sollima come back? Speaking to Variety, he makes it clear he’s already ruled himself out and has an idea of where the franchise should go:
“Every movie in these series needs to be a standalone that stays in the same world. I’d love to watch another chapter of Sicario, but it should be from a different director who has their own specific style. You shouldn’t have more than one film from the same director. Then it would be too much like a real franchise.”
Costing an economical $35 million to make, the film opened last weekend to a $23 million domestic debut over its first three days. The first film made $84 million at the worldwide box-office and was a hit on home video, so the new one will have to make a comparable amount if the series were to continue.

They should have waited for him to finish Blade Runner and if they decide to move on to a 3rd and film and he wants it then freakin' wait for him. What the heck is the rush?

Saw this today and I liked it. It's not as good as the first one, but the acting, the music and most of the writing is there. Some brutal moments, some heartwarming moments. The ending left me hanging, though.

I thought the final scene was outright embarassing to be honest with you, with him approaching the kid with a title drop.
I literally cringed. Made Alejandro into a Nick Fury rip off. This was an oddly paced film and the characters were changed from the first film to suit the plot. Also there were no real stand out scenes like the border scene or dinner scene from the first one. The tension wasn't there this time around. Probably Sheridan's weakest script. Makes sense to me that the third arc was messed with. Not really looking forward to a third one unless Villeneuve returns. Have no interest in
Sicario Jr.

I echo these thoughts.

I just saw this and I thought it was still really enjoyable. Definitely not as good as the first one but I'll see a third one for sure. It'd be nice if Denis returned to do it but I wouldn't count on it
