Sicario

"Your American ears won't understand, your eyes will see things that make no sense, but in the end, you'll understand."

I feel like Silvio's "pointlessness" and Blunt's "doesn't know anything" WAS the point. The Drug War is murky, complicated, and a battle between "kings." Those two, they're pawns and in the end, their fates DON'T really matter in the grand scheme of things. They're just another statistic, and nothing really changes.
Bingo. That's what made the end scene so powerful to me.

Seeing this again in a couple hours.

Alejandro might be one of the better badasses put to screen. Reminds me of Tom Cruise's Vincent. He was the only character to understand both worlds and recognize that everything is completely out of control. He uses the US government while everyone else gets used by it. Stuff makes me think about the morality that exists in combat.

So went to see this today as its' finally out over here and yeah this is the bomb it's a great thriller. I loved how the whole cartel theme was explored, Such a thrilling atmosphere and that's because of the superb cinematography and the music.

I thought the three main characters were great but Del Toro just brought it. And when he's on his game, HE'S ON HIS GAME!

Oh another thing I liked was Denis didn't shy away from the horror of the cartels and it felt realistic you know.

9/10

I liked this. No messing with Alejandro. Insane.

That [BLACKOUT]dinner scene[/BLACKOUT] was tense as hell. Damn.

Just saw the movie. I quite liked it. Very intense overall although a bit long.

I was surprised to see Daniel Kaluuya as Blunt's partner. He seemed so familiar and then 20 minutes into the movie it clicked that I had seen him in the second episode of the Black Mirror. If you haven't seen the episode "15 Million Merits", check it out. It's a great if also depressing science fiction story with a moving performance from Kaluuya.

I wonder what the proposed Alejandro-centered sequel/spinoff/whatever (if it ends up being made) would even be about?

It won't be made. Every time there's popular character a movie, they talk about a spin-off. And it basically never happens. Granted, it's slightly more likely given we live in the age of shared universes and sequels/reboots, but I really don't think it will happen at all.

Taylor Sheridan ( the writer) said they're just at the development stage and have got ideas but Denis hasn't said he's coming back to direct it or anything.

I honestly don't want to see a spin off with that character. Leave some of the mystery be. He was fantastic.

You can do both. Ever seen Clint Eastwood's The Man With No Name trilogy? You find out pretty much nothing about Clint's character. He shows up, does his thing, and leaves. You can do a movie about a character without having to reveal tons about their backstory.
Besides, we already know quite a bit about his backstory, so there's not a ton of "mystery" there.

I've seen this twice already. Great movie.

I will likely see this another two or three times at the cinema. When the credits rolled and the theme played, my body was covered in goosebumps. Although that sounds cliche, it is a rare occurrence for me. This is a masterpiece, truly.

Probably seeing it for a 3rd time tomorrow.

Only seen it once but I'm dying for another viewing. I want my girlfriend to see this so the next time I watch it will probably be with her; that being said, a red box is far cheaper than a trip for two to the movies ;)
I hope they don't do any spinoffs. I'd probably watch it if they did, but it isn't necessary.

Just saw this today, wow what a great film and very well-made. Didn't know before that the director of Prisoners (from last year) directed this, but I should have known since the overall atmosphere & style was very similar. :o

Not much I can add that hasn't already been said, it was just a terrific film in so many respects! The acting from everyone was in top form (especially BDT), the minimalistic musical score was immediately (and fantastically) unsettling, and the directing & cinematography combined to make such a visually arresting film that not only put me in awe of the scenery at times but also made me fear what was out there at the same time.

And I loved, loved the scene when the US team donned the night-vision goggles and walked out into the night and the enveloping darkness, and everyone's silhouettes slowly sank below the horizon. Holy hell that part was just pure visual awesomeness—the directing in that combined with the cinematography just made for such a spectacularly artistic and awesome sequence that was almost unreal to behold.

Damn was this film good, could very well end up being my favourite film of the year, loved everything about it and every scene was intense.

Just got back from this. Excellent movie. It does a great job of building up tension, and I really disagree with Jeremy Jahns who said that those parts were "boring." They added to the film by letting the atmosphere and world sink in on you so that you're invested in what's happening. Not many films have the patience to do that.
Roger Deakins did an excellent job as usual. As someone who's spent some time in Arizona, I can say that he nailed the look of the region. Not too lush, but not too arid-looking either like a lot of films depict it.
Emily Blunt once again showed why she is one of my favorite actors working today and Josh Brolin was great as well. But Benicio del Toro was an absolute knockout. He had a very unnerving, mysterious presence, but he was also sympathetic in a way. Definitely an Oscar-worthy performance.
And that ending:
it was so simple yet so powerful. The way the boy and his mother just grudgingly accept that their father and husband are gone now to the casual acceptance of the nearby gunfire. Says everything about the situation in Mexico right now; the region is so engulfed with violence that the people there expect to lose their family members at some point and encounter violence on a daily basis. The way it was conveyed really drives the movies themes home.

Final Score: 9/10. I think it's safe to say that Villenueve is one of the masters now.

Went to see this for a second time today and it's just get's better. You also start noticing things' you might have missed first time round.

I'm down for a prequel/spin off of Alejandro. You can keep the mystery but start off when he was a prosecutor and maybe see his wife and kid and what happened to them. I also would understand why Emily Blunt might not be in that film seeing as the last word's spoken between the two characters at the end.

Question:

So who is running the new cartel at the end? Is there already someone established and left unexplained? Would it be Del Toro's character or the CIA themselves? The Medellin Cartel was largely disbanded in the 90's.

I loved the movie, it's drama, action, cinematography, acting performances- everything was spot on.

I would say it's left unexplained but in that world, the word is out (probably by the CIA) Alejandro just took out the big boss. Maybe the sequel which is in early development will explain that.

I don't think it needs to be explained.
The whole point is that these things keep happening and it's a cyclical thing. Someone will take the place and this will be a never ending, which is why the government needs people like Alejandro and why Blunt couldn't kill him. Because she knew his purpose and eventually hers in the grand scheme.

A nobody since the top 3 or 4 had been taken out. It doesn't matter. Main goal was to weaken them and empower the Colombian cartel which the CIA is confident they can control with their inside man at the helm.
