Smart Cups Detect Date Rape Drugs

Drink Savvy, a Boston-based company, has created a material that changes color when it comes in contact with a drug-spiked drink.

Founder Mike Abramson said he plans to use the discovery to create a set of products, including cups, glassware, stirrers and straws, that he hopes will be used to help reduce date rape.

"Within the past three years, three of my very close friends and myself have been the unwitting victims of being drugged," Abramson said in a fundraising video.

The company is trying to raise $50,000 so it can produce the cups and straws and begin selling them online, according to a fundraising appeal posted on the website Indiegogo.

Date rape drugs, including the three most common, GHB, Ketamine and Rohypnol, are odorless, colorless and tasteless, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, making them difficult to detect.

Abramson estimates that more than a million people every year are drugged and sexually assaulted. In the video he said he hopes his product will "prevent someone you care about from possibly being the victim of drug-facilitated sexual assault."

Last year, Israeli scientists announced the development of a sensor that looks like a straw or a stirrer that can detect two of the most commonly used date rape drugs with 100 percent accuracy.

When this company sells stock, I'm in.

I hope products like this work and they they catch on.

Not to rain on the parade but this could be easily used to set up a guy. Guy pisses off girl next party she ruffies her own drink shows someone the cup, blames him, guy looks like **** gets ass kicked or worse. Its a great idea, but without anyway to tell who did the drugging it could be used for nefarious purposes. And at a party who keeps up with their own cup? Say the girl finishes her drink is she going to hold onto the cup all night? I doubt it. Four cocktails in and she has misplaced that thing. All this does is give a girl a false sense of safety. Sure as hell someone will come up with a drug to bypass the detection and then before you know it girls are getting drugged left and right because they think their special cup can detect everything and they arent paying attention.

The best way to not get drugged is pay attention and be responsible. Make your own drinks or carefully watch those who do, know your limit, and always be aware of your surroundings and who you are with. If someone messes with your drink set that **** down and get a new one. If you think someone might have bumped into your drink set that **** down and get a new one. If something is odd in anyway get a new drink. It isnt rocket science.

How would she prove he was the one that spiked her cup? It would only confirm that she has roofies in her cup, so she can avoid getting roofied.

You're being too negative. It's better than nothing, which is currently what exists. If it prevented even a few women from getting raped it would be worth it.

Now, the real question I have, is whatever happened to those vaginal inserts with the retractable razor blade that one woman had developed and wanted to start selling? Did they ever get to market?

EDIT: Apparently a version is on sale in South Africa called the Rape-aXe. It consists of a latex female condom with razor sharp barbs on the inside.

I may never get a ***** again...

eh, never mind.

The one I saw on the news years ago looked like a tampon insert but when a string is pulled it makes a razor blade shoot out. The main goal of that one was to make the man withdraw and, of course, be totally disinterested in continuing the rape. The barbed one appears made to cause quite a bit more damage/pain than the one I saw.
