Some exciting movie news today, Smokin’ Aces writer/director Joe Carnahan updated his official website and announced that a prequel to Smokin’ Aces has officially been greenlit. On his blog, Carnahan states…

Finally, some actual ‘Smokin Aces’ news. Universal has officially greenlit the prequel and we are underway. Cameos will abound. Trust me.

Good lord. Why in the name of baby Jesus would anyone revisit this crap?

I liked it, but I certainly don't need a prequel.

Carnahan's original idea had the film focusing on The Tremor Brothers

i loved the original. but i suppose im in the minority. :o

Certainly doesn't warrant a prequel... but it could be interesting in a way, I suppose.

May not be... but could be.

I like the cast, but really hated the movie.

I've live the prequel to be comprised of vignettes focusing on all the characters, and maybe have them cross paths unknowingly throughout the film. I don't think we need anything in depth on the rise of Buddy Israel. The first ten minutes of the movie was enough. But I'd love to see more on El Estrago (The Plague!!), The Tremors, and maybe even Jack Dupree.

Whatever Carnahan decides, I'm on board. I loved Smokin' Aces, even if it tried to be a little too dramatic at the end, but it really is one of those movies where you can forgive its shortcomings because of how well certain characters turn out. All their crazy quirks, and the exchanges of dialogue, they really made the film for me. And something I didn't realize the first time I saw it, Carnahan cut the film so well, the way he transitioned from one scene to the next, it was very subtle, but when you watch the film again, you catch it immediately. It's all quite clever!

same here...i think the movie tried to hard to be 'cool' and ended up being boring. i wasn't impressed with this movie at all and them wanting to make a prequel leaves me scratching my head.

Kevin Durand Says No Thanks To Smokin Aces 2
By Josh Tyler
We’ve got new details on the status of Smokin’ Aces 2. Yes, the sequel to Joe Carnahan’s mildly successful hitman movie is still happening. More and more though, it looks like it will be happening without almost anyone who had anything to do with the first one.

The film is supposed to be a prequel. They’re calling it Smokin’ Aces: Blowback and it’ll focus on the violent Tremor brothers. One problem though, at least one of the original Tremor brothers isn’t going to be in it. We’ve learned that Kevin Durand, who played Jeeves Tremor in the original film (and who you’ll see in Wolverine next year) is out. He’s decided not to return for Smokin’ Aces 2.

The status of the other two Tremor brothers remains uncertain, but Chris Pine played one of them. With Star Trek on the horizon odds are Pine will be much too busy for a sequel which, seems as if it’s shaping up to be little more than a direct-to-dvder full of replacement actors.

As reported last week by Moviehole, right now the only actors signed for Smokin' Aces: Blowback are Nestor Carbonell and Tommy Flanagan.

I loved Smoking Aces, but why make a prequel? They can't think it will make a lot of money so why bother?

I *****ed about Smokin' Aces on these boards for many times already, but I can't resist doing it again; It had the most ridiculous twist I have ever seen in a film. It was pathetic.

There is no reason to make this movie.

I agree.. sigh... makes you just want to shout something like: YOU B******'S!!! YOU F***ING BB******'S!!

I dunno why exactly, and maybe I'm the only one. But these f***ing pointless prequels and/or remakes just make you boil sometimes. Heh..

I guess I can understand when they want to capitalize on a popular property for name recognition. But the first movie doesn't seem like the kind of movie to do that with. Considering the first one only made $36 million even with a popular cast, what can the ceiling be for a poorly-marketed followup without the cast?

Pretty much my sentiments. Take a fun concept and just flat-out ruin it.

Yea that twist at the end was so far "out there" it did ruin it a bit for me.

But to be honest, I don't think the film was aiming for realism or plausibility.
