In a Los Angeles Times interview, Christine Yano, curator of an upcoming exhibit on Hello Kitty at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, said Sanrio considers its billion-dollar icon to be a human girl. As she put it:

“I was corrected — very firmly. That’s one correction Sanrio made for my script for the show. Hello Kitty is not a cat. She’s a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it’s called Charmmy Kitty.”
Cue the collective—and understandable—”What?!?!?!” on social media.

We reached out to Sanrio for comment, and will update this story if we hear back.

Honestly, I don't even want to live in a world where Hello Kitty isn't even a kitten.

How can this be?

Is Lion-o really considered a cat? Cartoons are exceptions.

Bah-humbug, by that logic, Goofy's not a dog. Silly goose.

Turns out Bugs bunny isn't a bunny! nor Daffy duck a Duck!! :wow: :wow: :wow:

This whole thing stinks of a desire to get publicity.

"Oh, Hello Kitty isn't a cat. It's a _____." So pretentious. It's a ****ing cat.

This is almost as bad as that *****e trying to convince us gif should be pronounced "jif". :o

If she said it was a dog, you might have a point. It's a cat-looking drawing made real by a creator who said she made it a little girl who just looks like that.

Lion-o is a perfect example as they never refer to him as a cat, and almost always as a young boy in a man's body.

next you'll tell me Louise Belcher, isn't really a pink bunny :whatever:

oh wait :csad:

Stop trying to destroy the hype with that controversy.

Also, hello kitty is a ****ing cat.

This is how this little "revelation" should have been handled.

"Hello kitty isn't a cat."

"She's a cat."

"No she isn't. She's actually a little girl who looks like a cat."

... ... ...

*picks up phone*

"Who are you calling?"

"The police. Clearly you're a sick SOB who likes to imagine little girls as furries."

That would have gotten him all the publicity he would ever need.

The only Charmy I know is a little annoying Bee from the Sonic games.

Isn't Hello Kitty supposed to be an autistic kid?

(No, that's not a joke)

Hmmm...I'm starting to get the notion that Hello Kitty is the abominable genetic merging of human and cat that's so popular in Japan.

Of course it's not a cat, it's a pillow, with the shape of a little girl's body attached to it

......

I just freaked myself out

Goofy doesn't walk on all fours, but then again, Pluto is also a dog who acts like a dog.

yeah thats because goofy is a human and pluto is a chimp

two separate species that evolved from the same source but different paths

So, one day Hello Kitty will grow up to look like...
