I am not criticizing Brandon Routh, it just seems that the character is very tangential to the main plot of the season (Oliver and the League), and was wondering what other people thought.

I assume he will play a big part in the final but mainly so that they have developed another character for them to use so that they can create another spin-off show.

Agreed. I think his main role is for expanding the DC TV universe, he has yet to add anything to the overall league plot, just his whole stupid love triangle thing. Probably just world building. And if that is the case then they probably should have toned down his screen time and focus more on the actual plot, but that's a whole other discussion lol

I guess it's because DC should have the first shrinking hero in live action, before Ant-Man is released.

Bingo.

Ray has been a good character, but he hasn't really added to or moved the plot forward. If he wasn't in this season, perhaps we would have gotten more LOA and Malcom scenes and the season would have been more consistent, made more sense and been more clear. I have still loved the season though, its just that people have been saying that Malcolm has not really brought anything to the season and that he is just there for the sake of being there but I think Ray is more guilty in that regard. Maybe people are more forgiving of Ray than they are Malcolm because Ray is more funny and a more likeable and nicer person.

So...I see they introduced the Nano-tech that can shrink things...does that mean we really will get an Atom with the the power to shrink? I assumed we wouldn't...

Well they said from day 1 that we wouldn't see him shrink on Arrow and I think they are sticking to that.

But part of the problem is that they never wanted the Atom so it is something they have to work in.

I think people have more of a problem with Malcolm because Ray is kinda useless (meaning poorly used and given nothing but love triangling to do most of the time) while Malcolm's plots seem to actively detract from the show with logically leaps so huge that Superman couldn't match them.

Honestly, I do wish that Ray could have had more to do with the screen time he was given, and with more characters.

At least I remember he's on the show. Unlike someone else.

Because WB wanted to have an Iron Man clone, and couldn't use Ted Kord?

Personally I'm hoping he isn't in next season or is only there for a guest appearance. It's hard to get into his character in a large capacity. More power to him if he gets his own show, but as far as the atom on Arrow, it just doesn't work for me. For starters, the show is getting too crowded with vigilante types. I would be all or Routh being on the show in the form of a scientist/billionaire without the Atom suit. He is better suited (no pun!) on the flash where The Flash actually has no real teammates with any sort of super power or physical training (not including firestorm who hasn't been on the show much).

Same reason they devote plenty of time to Firestorm on Flash. World building and spin off.

I'd say they want to make a TV Justice League for Arrow and Flash, so they made Ray on Arrow and Firestorm on Flash.

They did a much better job of incorporating Firestorm in Flash though. There he feels actually tied into the series.

They had the luck of the particle accelerator explosion. They're doing their best to incorporate Ray at least. There's plenty of poor decision making this season but barring the love triangle, Ray have been good value.

Spin-off potential.

And *maybe* so that Ray can "gift" Palmer Technologies/Queen Consolidated back to Oliver at the end of the season so that the series can move past the compelling "Oliver is broke" and no longer has unlimited resources storyline which they were so interested in at the end of season 2 and seem to have completely forgotten in season 3.

Also, there weren't enough attractive men on the series between Oliver, Roy, Diggle, Malcolm and Lance, so they decided to add someone else to increase the aesthetic appeal of the series.
