gi.biz is reporting that Sony is, in fact, considering another version of the PS3 with a larger hard drive.

Quote:
A Sony Computer Entertainment spokesperson has confirmed that the company is "considering" producing a new version of PlayStation 3 with a larger hard drive.

The comments come just weeks after Sony filed an FCC application which referred to an 80GB PS3. Currently 20GB and 60GB models are available in Japan, with SCEA recently announcing that the 20GB version is to be discontinued in North America.

According to Bloomberg, spokesperson Satoshi ***uoka said the decision is "in line with our strategy as we had planned to choose models based on consumer needs".

Bloomberg also reports that Sony is "considering introducing the model with a bigger hard disk", as stated by ***uoka. He did not provide any further details.

Setting the scene: Sony HQ Boardroom...

'I know, let's kill the PS3 version people seem to really want and replace it with an even more expensive model. Brilliant (clink of Guinness bottles follows).'

Interesting stuff.

Actually most people do not want the 20GB version. It was heavly outsold by the 60GB version and that's why they discontinued it.

doesnt really make much sense to me. If they are going to do another version, why only add 20gb? Its not that big of a differencce. They need to go bigger or just stick with what they have. Plus they can not afford a more expensive system and the only way this would work was to lower the price of the 60gb which I dont see them doing right now. I dont really think consumers care about a bigger hard drive at this point. I say save those costs and just pack more in with the system, like HD cables, headset, possible remote controll, etc...

No thanks, I have a 120GB hard drive PS3.

If a new version offered anything that I'd really want that wasn't in the original package, I'd fook a dook.

I guess as hard drive prices bottom out around the 20 dollar mark Sony might just keep increasing the Hard Drive storage as the progressively larger drioves hit taht price point. There's probably no difference in price between a 60 gig and an 80 gig anymore.

Agreed.

I don’t think it will change the sales that much. But what color is it going to be?

IMO if their going to do a hard drive increase, and make an elite version over the other, they need to increase it a lot more than 20 GB. I'm not sure the cost for game hard drives, but normal hard drives have been about $1 or less per gig for a few years now.

You can get a computer hard drive (maybe not top of the line, but not bad either) of about 80GB for about $60 + tax. 20GB would be a small increase, and wouldn't warrent a large price increase, especially since the 60GB version triples the memory of the 20GB and is $100 more. My guess is the 60GB version becomes the normal $500 version, or goes down to $450 or $400 by Christmas, and a 120GB version is introduced as the new version for the $600 higher grade model.

The 80gb version is only available in South Korea. They dont have a 60gb option there

Probably has something to do with how hard drive prices scale in Korea or whatnot.

They better make up their f***ing minds about releasing it or not soon.
I plan on buying a PS3 with the money I save up from my job over the summer.
I should have enough in three to four weeks.

they have made up their minds. Its not available anywhere other than Korea. I wouldnt buy a PS3 over teh summer unless you really want one bc I bet they will release a new model by Christmas with rumble and/or an even bigger hard drive

those bastids, I already bought the 60 gb version when it came out. Just like microsoft. I would of waited for damn elite if i knew they were gonna release that!!!!!

well the 80GB is only for Korea, so does it really matter?

its really not that big of a deal. From what Ive read you can easily swap in another harddrive into the system if and when you feel the need to upgrade for space

How about they give us some good games before they worry about graphics.
