Spider-Man friend or foe Game Thread

^Yea well I just got my gameinformer and decided to post it. I rented this thing and if not for the single fact I am a huge Spidey fan, this game would have been even more awful. Repetitive levels, monotonous gameplay button smashing, horrible character design, and flat/repetitive level builds. It is a tad fun for about an hour but it gets really old really fast. I am still waiting on a game company to treat the Spider-Man franchise with respect and deliver a great game...not one they finish in a year and multi platform to maximize profits. The Spider-Man movie games are headed in that direction but they still lack a lot. I will be proud to be a Spider-Man gamer when Activision/Treyarch treats Spider-Man like Bungie does Halo, like Epic does Gears of War, MGS, BioShock, GTA, etc...

i think people are kinda missing the point with this game.....the movie games and the movies are aimed at the older child but dont forget Marvel still want to keep the younger generations happy (hence the spiderman and friend toys) and therefore they released a fairly simple game that is based on the movies (which they may not quite have understood).then not only has it got cute graphics and simple comedy lines but it also has a few characters people might not know about at a young age and it opens up a few other directions for them to follow ie comic collecting, toy collecting....all in all i think this was a very clever and very successful marketing scheme by Marvel and it will do their comic and toys sales the world of good and may even bring in a few extra thousand viewers or so of their movies.

^That is all grand...but there comes a point when you have to appease the older fanbase unless you want to alienate them all. Any kids will love anything with Spider-Man's face thrown on it...(hence this game) but quantity does not equal quality. They can keep pushing out these crappy little toys, dumb looking clothes, and bad video games but mark my words the rest of the franchise will suffer. If they keep diluting the genres to fit their biggest demographic...kiddies...then they will begin to loose their older and original fanbase. Maybe it is just me getting older but it disgusts me to see some of the crap these big companies are putting out these days just to make a profit...and that is with everything in today's world. If the next game or movie is not a step up in quality, then this franchise may have already had its peak and will start its downward climb.

im sorry so the fact that the films and games are all pushing PG-12 rating that doesnt appeal to the older fanbase?

The content of some of the comics and the films is sometimes lost on the younger generation due to either the complexity of the story lines or the violence in them. This game along with the toys and tshirts are aimed at the younge ages to bring them into the franchise so theyll enjoy Marvel more as they grow up. I dont think this one game (compared to the movies and games Marvel have made and are going to make which are aimed at the older audience) is gonna lose them fans or money. Like i said it was a very clever idea and if Marvel keep this up then i will definately let my son continue to play the games and watch the films and read the comics. If i let my 4 year old try to tackle spiderman 3 he wouldnt know where to start as the controls and theme of the game is complex and too eerie. I let him play FoF and he enjoyed the simple controls and the graphics and just the sight of all the villains on the screen cos he could name them and liked the idea of choosing one of these characters to run along side him and also to play with....im not saying it was so easy that he fully understood the controls or concept cos again hes only 4 but he dd enjoy it thoroughly.and im sure kids of an older age would enjoy it too if not just for the relief and ease of the game and the fun aspect. The official movie games are too complex for younger kids that is why this game is out...if you dont like well that to me says you have a problem with variety. It doesnt have to be 100% about the films all the time. They are allowed to venture off in other directions to create more fans....

open your mind to the possibilities

^I don't have kids so you certainly have different aspects on these situations than I do...certainly more. What I am getting at is that I do not understand how older people on here will shell out 60 bucks for a game that will last them 8 hours, a repetitive and droll 8 hours. I think the Lego Star Wars game is a prime example of catering to a young audience but making it diverse and expansive all in one...Friend or Foe is not that. I would buy a Lego Spider-Man game in a second because they are quality games, childish yet puzzling and diverse. And certainly not all children need a one button mashing game...I know many kids that can pwn me in Halo or GoW and those games are extremely complex. But if the masses keep shelling out money to buy these kiddy games, then they will keep making them because their profit margin is higher, same goes with toys and other merchandise. I am happy Marvel wants to bring in a new era of fans, I was raised on X-Men and Spidey cartoons but there comes a time when the older fans need to be pleased too. I think the movies have done a great job balancing the line between children and adult fans but it seems the games are not so well handled.

Kids dont need kiddy games. I never played one as a kid. They barely even existed ten years ago. They make this and the TMNT game impossible to lose. Kids played the old TMNT arcade games and Maximum Carnage and those games were all ages, they werent vulgar for no reason like some current games and they also werent catering to kids. They were fun to play yet difficult to master like any good game should be.

And SM3 for the PSP is just the Wii/PS2 port. So if I were you, I wouldn't get it.

It's not God-awful. It's just that Treyarch didn't want to bother with the PS2, Wii and PSP versions, so they shipped it out to a comapny who's been out of Spider-Man since the release of Spider-Man 2 Enter Electro. But it does make me want to get an XBox 360 to play the better Spider-Man 3 though.

Man it sucks that the PS2 doesn't have all the characters and especially the PSP exclusives being who they are. I wonder if anyone has Carnage and Electro unlocked and can get a screen cap. I'd like to see how they were designed for this game.

Here's a screenshot I found on the gamefaqs boards. Sadly it's not a gameplay shot.

Hey Nathan thanks man, just what I was lookin for. Hopefully some gameplay images will show up but at least we get the basic gist of what he looks like. I was wondering if they were going to give him a different design like they did with the movie venom. But highly appreciate it.

Why did they use the Movieverse version of some characters, but then 616 for the rest?
My guess is that most of the target audiance (children) know Spider-Man by the movies. So they use movie designs from characters who appeared in the movies and comic designs to those who did not.

Agreed.

Makes sense to me.

I haven't had the chance to try the game for myself, but it looks pretty fun. Mainly because you get to play the New Goblin and some of the other cool characters (like the Green Goblin), which you don't get with many other Spidey games... It's kid-friendly, but it still looks very interesting. Can't wait to get it.

Do you have one of Iron Fist? I don't have the game yet.

I really enjoyed this game and I'm certainly not a kid. I played the most as Iron Fist but I'm an Iron Fist fan from way back. The game play wasn't tough but sometimes that's just what I want. I'm tired of getting frustrated by some of the extremely difficult games on the market. Playing as Rhino, Iron Fist and Scorpion is as fun as it gets for a long time comic fan.

That sucks that carnage wasnt in the ps2 version...I have now finished this game 6 times now........................It got pretty tedious after awhile..

How in the world did you play that game 6 times? It got repetitive after level one, and the only saving grace was the large variety of sidekicks which also soon goes sour.
