This has been a long overdue question but why do the TV/cable networks advertise their programs during actual programs, isn't that what commercial breaks are for? and it's annoying because they take up one 3rd of the screen.

This is a habit that only surfaced a couple of years since I don't remember this practice when I was a kid.

As an example this clip from Family Guy.

Because everyone knows that people flip through channels during commercials, so to make sure you see the ad for Tyler Perry's new show, they air it during Family Guy.

or with people DVRing and TiVoing, people are skipping commercials and they have to advertise somehow....movie trailers do it with that bar on top of the screen that is visible as your fast forwarding through it....its an advertising tactic

I used to not mind them...but they've gone overboard lately. Some of the adds take up a large portion of the screen, right during a good part of a show. :/

The one I hate the most is when I am watching some movie on tv that has subtitles for foreign actors...and a ****ing ad covers their words. Absolutely hate it!

I actually thought it was because they figured rather than advertising their own shows during commercial breaks, they can sell 100% of the break time to others and just advertise their own stuff during the shows themselves. They make more money that way than by taking even one second of commercial time away from the people they're selling it to.
