Thrill-seekers, like Steve Fossett, piss me off. Here was a guy who was a multi-millionaire. But was he a philanthropist? Not as far as Im aware of. Im sure he made the odd contribution to charity, but did we ever hear much about that? I sure as hell didnt. All I ever heard about the guy was he was an adventurer, a thrill-seeker who liked to try and break records. What purpose does it serve to break a record? Who benefits from it? Do poor people somehow benefit when some guy sets off around the world on his own in a balloon? Ya know what he coulda spent all that money on? He coulda spent all that money he wasted on adrenaline surges helping people. That money could have gone towards building houses for the homeless, to AIDS charities, to children suffering and dying in Africa. And where did it go? It went towards making Steve Fossett feel like a superman. What a selfish sonuva***** he was. And how much did it cost to search for him after his plane went down? $1.6 million. And how much time? When these goddamned thrill-seekers go climbing mountains, leaving their waste all over those mountains, and then get killed in avalanches, when they go hiking on their own and get lost, when they try to set a sailing record and their boat sinks, should we even bother looking for them? These people not only put their own lives at risk pursuing these frivolous activities, they put the lives of the search and rescue teams at risk too, search and rescue teams who could be out saving the lives of people who werent acting for selfish reasons, but who, for whatever reasons, had no choice about their current predicaments, people who probably wont be rescued because time is being wasted elsewhere. I dont even agree with those who do dangerous things for charities. Theres a lot of other things you could do if you wanted to help people. Stop taking foolish risks just for the hell of it.
