SWORD Ongoing Series

Yeah, and Daniel immediately lost his entire reason for being there, so he had to get a whole bunch of new gimmicks. Oh noes, he's the damsel in distress because Sam actually kicks ass! Oh noes, his archeology background provides some mystery they need to solve! Oh noes, he ascends to a higher plane of existence, descends back to the physical plane, and suddenly can't walk down to the grocery store without tripping over 3 alien artifacts and a couple deus ex machinae!

Then when Claudia Black joined the cast, they just had him babysit her the entire time. Daniels uselessness later on in the show was really emphasized by Jonas acting as his replacement, and adding absolutely nothing to the show other than a "the Kelownans want the bomb" subplot. That's why Stargate Atlantis' team consisted entirely of aliens warriors, military personnel, and the one scientist as smart as Sam. The "OMG, I speak many languages and want to negotiate everything" character stayed behind and whined over the walkie talkies at Col. Shepherd until she finally got eaten by Replicators and died.

Really a shame, when you think about it, since the movie and the core of the mythos was sort of entirely built around Daniel and his crazy-but-really-not(-but-really-kinda-crazy) theories.

I liked badass "wearing sleeveless shirts and taking the UN ship back alone from smuggler Vala while having sex with her" Daniel. He was in the unit for ten years, so they let him become something of a warrior, which is a good thing. And he had some good chemistry with Black.

His ascension was stupid though and a huge blow to the character.

To each his own. I'm not saying Brand's a sparkling gem of personality at this point, but I think she has diamond in the rough potential. I like the bits of personality I've seen from her so far. She reminds me of a competent Star-Lord whom the universe doesn't seem to hate quite as much.

As for the f***-buddies thing, I don't think that's it. Gillen described them as Nick and Nora Charles in space, and Nick and Nora were devoted to each other, even though Nick flirted with anything that moved. Although I suspect Nora will do the flirting in this case.

If Star-Lord didn't have the bad luck issues, he wouldn't be as interesting.

It is interesting that Beast has "settled" down in terms of his dating. In the 70's when he joined the Avengers he once had a rep as a lady's man. He once had a torrid romance with Dazzler in the 80's. But since the 90's he mellowed out considerably. Trish Tilby took all the wild man out of him.

To be honest, I don't think this series has long for the world. Marvel can barely launch any X-Men spin offs these days.

I'd have preferred Beast and Wonder Man on Slott's MIGHTY AVENGERS than here. :( Oh well.
