From Variety: Producers team on 'Assassins' redo - Thomas, Nakazawa to make Miike pic
ALI JAAFAR said:
Producers Jeremy Thomas and Toshiaki Nakazawa are teaming to make helmer Takashi Miike’s samurai pic “Thirteen Assassins.”

Project, which is set in the shogun era and follows 13 assassins who come together for a suicide mission to kill an evil lord, is based on Eiichi Kudo’s 1963 film of the same name.

Thomas’ U.K.-based Recorded Picture Co. will co-produce with Nakazawa, who produced the foreign language film Oscar winner “Departures.”

Hanway Films, which Thomas founded in 1998, will handle international sales. Toho has acquired Japanese rights.

Principal photography starts July in Japan’s Yamagature Prefecture.

Nakazawa previously worked with Miike on Quentin Tarantino starrer “Sukiyaki Western Django” and “The Bird People in China.”

Thomas has a long history of working with Asian directors and on Asian subject matter.

He raised most of the money for Bernardo Bertolucci’s $25 million “The Last Emperor” independently, at one point even scouring phone books for sources of finance, and also obtained permission from the Chinese authorities to lense in the Forbidden City. Pic, which was released in 1987, won nine Academy Awards, including best picture

what's Mikke's ratio of his good movies vs his bad movies?

Even the bad ones are good :woot:

The problem with Miike is that he makes too many. Some of them obviously have a pretty rushed post-production.

Even so , his filmography is great. He is one of those brilliant guys , that have a lot of ideas and simply cant organize them...so he tries to do them all.

I cant even imagine what he would try to do if he had those crazy hollywood budgets.

he makes like what....5 movies a year? something like that. he's insane.

This sounds extremely interesting. I don't know too much about the director. Has he done anything notable?

Ichi The Killer
Audition
Dead or Alive Trilogy
Gozu
Izo
Zebraman
Imprint(His banned episode for Masters of Horror)

In the last 2 year he made 4 movies , but he used to make 4 :woot:

Johnny To now also makes 2 (rarely 3) movies per year , and they are awesome. Since 1999 he made 26 motion pictures . But To is in a class apart. A masterful filmmaker that barely gets any recognition in US.

Those are some of his best. I would add Black Society trilogy , his recent Crows movies , Bird People in China , full metal yakuza , Blues Harp , city of lost souls and obviously Koroshiya 1 (a.k.a Ichi the Killer)

I don't know about this guy , he seems to go for a lot of shock value but then again Asian cinema seems unrestrained at times.

This got released on VOD yesterday and I really want to watch it, but I rather not pay $10. I rather pay that to see it in theaters, but I don't think it will get released here. I may just watch it today.

I just saw the new trailer here...

Any day Takashi Miike releases a new film, it’s like a holiday. When it’s a film that has buzz like 13 Assassins, it’s heaven. Miike’s latest release is scheduled to hit theaters on April 29 and after gangbuster screenings at South by Southwest, Fantastic Fest and AFI Fest, among others, we’ve heard nothing but incredibly positive things. The reviews are the kind of raves that makes it seem like 13 Assassins ranks among Miike’s best: Ichi The Killer, Audition, Gozu and others. Check out the full trailer and new poster after the break.

Head over to Apple for the full, high definition version of this trailer.

Here’s the official plot description:
Cult director Takeshi Miike (Ichi the Killer, Audition) delivers a bravado period action film set at the end of Japan’s feudal era in which a group of unemployed samurai are enlisted to bring down a sadistic lord and prevent him from ascending to the throne and plunging the country into a wartorn future.
And the new poster:

How excited are you for this one?

Looks great.

Oh man, this movie was so good! Loved every second and could possibly be my favorite Miike movie. Can't wait to watch it again.

Is Black Society Trilogy worth it? I own it and personally have not watched it yet. I really need to get around to it as a Miike fan, but if its good it will bump it up to watching ti sooner.

This project looks good. Gotta find it at some point.
