SPOKANE, Washington — An explosive device found inside a backpack along a downtown Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade route was a credible threat capable of causing multiple deaths, the FBI said Tuesday.
The device was successfully disposed of by the FBI’s explosive unit after the backpack was found on a park bench by a Spokane city employee about an hour before the parade was set to begin.
Frank Harrell, special agent in the charge of the Spokane FBI office, wouldn’t discuss what specifically made the bomb so dangerous. But he said the investigation has become a top priority.
“It definitely was, by all early analysis, a viable device that was very lethal and had the potential to inflict multiple casualties,” Harrell told The Spokesman-Review.
Harrell said the timing and placement of the device wasn’t coincidental.
“I think the link to the Martin Luther King celebration and march is inescapable,” he said. “At that point, it falls directly in the realm and sphere of domestic terrorism. Clearly, there was some political or social agenda here.”
The bomb was discovered at 9:25 a.m. in a Swiss Army-brand backpack that also contained two T-shirts.
Another explosive device was found March 23 beside the Thomas S. Foley U.S. Courthouse in the eastern Washington city. No arrests have been made in that investigation, Harrell said, adding that agents didn’t know if the two incidents were related.
The FBI is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of people responsible for placing the device found Monday.
Harrell said the people who discovered the backpack and brought it to the attention of police were the heroes of the day. Police quickly rerouted the parade and called for the bomb disposal unit, he said.

That forum is inundated with Islamic terrorism. This is very real, and it should be seen as a sign of the times as this day and age seems to belong to the domestic terrorist.

As it stands, this is a thwarted terrorist act that may or may not have anything to do with Islamic terrorism. At the moment, there is no indication that it is, and it is its own news.

I bet you would like that. :whatever:

Well, it is possible. MLK Day march, lots of people, hard to make secure, tempting target for someone looking to kill a lot of civilians. Domestic terrorism is a perfectly reasonable theory as well, and is probably more likely as it would be somewhat unusual for an Islamic terrorist to pick a target associated with the civil rights movement as opposed to the Federal government or Western corporate globalization, but either is entirely within the realm of possibility.

That's because the most common terrorists are Muslim. There are mentions in that thread though to Columbia's FARC and Spain's ETA, two terror groups who are not Muslim.

Are you sure about that?

I mean, I don't know for certain myself, but it's always seemed to me that the only reason out media is so saturated with stories of Islamic terrorism is because those are the most prominant groups that have a beef with American culture, and because of the focus of a lot of our foreign policy much of our attention is on the Middle East where most of them make their home base. That doesn't necessarily mean that there are more Islamic terrorists than any other kind. You're going to get terrorist groups in any region where the economy is poor, the government is corrupt, tyranical, or ineffective, and there are hot button social and political issues.

You don't know, the perpetrator could be a radical Muslim.

 So is Islamic Terrorism.

I kind of doubt that, an islamlic terrorist would've pull a James Bond villian move like this. Dropping the bomb off and just asssuming the bomb went off. They usually want a front row seat for the destruction.

Good point. They generally like to scream "God is Great!" right before the explosion. This is more like the Olympic Park bombing in Atl. That was a domestic terrorist.

Well, they found it didn't they? So that's a plus.

I like how people in America are focusing on the Islamic terror threat , but are ignoring the domestic terror threat. All those anti government nutjobs and racists didn't disappear when the 90s ended.

Judging from all the racist comments I see posted on that yahoo link, I agree. However Shemtov I'm still looking for a comment from somebody of the Islamic faith? Any Muslims here would like to chime in with their opinion?

I'll always view the domestic terrorist as more dangerous than their Islamic counterpart. They can actually blend in with no trouble at all. Who's gonna suspect John Smith of making a car bomb ?

This sounds like the work of a white american nut job.

Do you remember the Times Square Car bomb?

Yeah, the maker of that bomb just " Drop[ed] the bomb off and just asssum[ed] the bomb went off", and he definitely was a Muslim Extremist.
But yeah, I highly doubt that the MLK day parade bomb was made by a Islamo-Facist. It was probably a racist.
But you can't deny the possibilities, however slight.

Wow, is former President Bush trying to start a war on terror against African Americans now?

I don't care if it was the Mickey Mouse, Tupac, Biggie Smalls, and Space Harrier Syndicate, the fact remains innocent people are losing their lives between the vitriole(popular new word!) of these grown ass necrophites!!! Hey man, this universe is big! It would take us probably 20 lifetimes to travel to the next Star! The simple fact that we know it's there, that it exists, that it contains worlds with resources that dwarf that of our own tells me society needs to...

grow the :pal: up!!!!!!!!

Bush isn't a racist like that dumb piece of s*** Kanye West said.:whatever:

Of course not, he's an alien self-replicating cyborg from the planet Zendar!

Thats what you get when you discuss politics on a comic book forum. Attention, I need it now.

Seriously , if he hated black people , why were Condeleeza Rice and Colin Powell members of his cabinet ? He also did the most for Africa out of all the presidents. If he hated black people none of the stuff I just said would be true.

in President Bush's eyes, they're all brown, so they must all be Muslim extremists.
