Far be it from me to jump into this frey, but Hulks got a point. One of the reasons I do more lurking then posting now is because of the increased shipper talk that takes place on the boards. Its been a slow gradual process, but its happened, and its quite annoying (to me).
Everyone is entitled to talk about what they wish, but I cant count the number of times now Ive seen discussion turn to who should be with Clark in what way. Ive skipped through entire pages trying to avoid it.
I realize this is an introduction to the Superman mythos for quite a few, but I do roll my eyes to anyone who suggests that girl X get more screen time with Clark -- or how girl X deserves one last run with Clark.
I really dont understand the chatter the best theory I can come up with (and its a weak theory at best), is that some of you see yourselves in certain female characters and keep hoping that you could get the hero.
What are people hoping? That the girls are the ones who have to realize on their own that they can never be with him? Must they throw themselves on the sword for him so that their not being with Clark means something?
Again, I just dont get it. But I do know its happening with more frequency here.
Wow. So, the emphasis on shipper comments here has forced you into being a lurker and not a poster? Have you ever been to any actual shipper forums? Trust me, this is nowhere near being one. But I do realize that it's easier to whine from the sidelines as opposed to actually participating in the game.
Enjoying the relationship aspects of this show as much as or even more than the "super" moments does NOT warrant being accused of "Mary Sue-ism" which is essentially what you have implied in your 'weak theory.' A *highly* insulting theory, I might add.
I guess the reason I'm most insulted is the implication that any talk or expression of having a favorite 'ship' somehow invalidates any and all other contributions made to this forum over the past few years and several thousand posts. Oh, but since you've been forced to skip so many pages to avoid the offensive shipper stuff, I suppose any actual valid comments were probably missed too. Unless you just believe that valid discussions of the show aren't possible from people who also dare to enjoy the show on more than one level.
One of the reasons this has always been a favorite SV haunt of mine, aside from my dear friends, is because the arrogant fanboyism that reigns supreme on other comic-centered sites and looks down its nose at SV always seemed less prevalent here. Or at least, easier to avoid.
The idea that the only aspect of the show that is respectable and warrants "serious discussion" is the Superman mythos angle.. or maybe the Lex angle.. or hey, let's throw in the 'how hot Lois is' angle...is selling the show short, IMO.
Funny though, to me, the thing that makes SV the show that it is, with its
own mythos is the emphasis on Clark's humanity and his relation
ships with those he loves. Perhaps you're right and I'm the disillusioned one. I'll be very happy to take my oh-so-offensive shipper comments elsewhere and leave you to dissect the finer points of the Superman mythos in SV.
