The Boss (Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Bell, Peter Dinklage)

I think she's funny in the right projects. You don't see the cursing 'fatty go boom' type humor in "Mike & Molly", and that's refreshing.

I like her, but I kind of miss her Gilmore Girls days, tbh. Sometimes I forget that she can do "nice" humor too, lol.

Mike and Molly is crap. :o

I remember her from that Ryan Reynolds movie, The Nines. Great dramatic chops in that one!

Retitled The Boss

Yeah, because who the f*** wants something recognizable. Lets get generic.

That is very generic. Sad too. I was looking up the title of a movie yesterday and there were several with it, including two that came out this year. Man Up was the name of the movie. At least they weren't the same story, just the same bland title.

Not a fan of McCarthy, her comedic "range" is she's fat and doesn't veer away from that.

Yeah, it was the worst in Spy when they prettied her up for that dinner scene, and it was just this sappy ploy to the audience like "See? Fat girls can look like princesses too!" - It's like, how about yes, she does look attractive, but just let her look attractive in the movie instead of making some point about it. Don't make her vomit on people and make her wear wigs and cat sweaters and give her pink eye for 85% of the film.

Sickening. When she was all dolled up, I heard girls in the theater go, "Awww! She looks so pretty!", like it was something so shockingly impossible. Like she's some retched creature that had no hope and suddenly through the use of movie magic she's Cinderella.

I don't mind her, to be honest. I hate what studios are doing to her. Deep down, I don't think she likes being "that actress".

Women have no idea what they're saying or doing when it comes to feminism. They're all over the place with it.

Here's a little secret: Rocketman is just kidding and if often kidding. I found out via PM, when he said something that was so stupid that I had a feeling it couldn't be real. His humor though is very grey, ala Stephen Colbert when he played up his character when he did the Colbert Report.

Sarcasm doesn't translate in text.

The name change is VERY disapointing. You'd think it would be viewed as a positive to have a memorable name...

I have noticed a lot of people will say they don't like her brand of humor, as if she is somehow all that different from other comedians. And are careful to avoid adding "because she's fat and female" even though she isn't all that different from John Candy or Chris Farley as far as being a fat comedian goes (style-wise, she is more Farley than Candy but it has nothing to do with style and more to do with appearance).

I do know there are people who genuinely do not like her comedy which is fine. There are plenty of comedians I wonder how anyone finds funny but all too often the subtext is "fat female" is not funny.

I've thought the exact same thing for the longest time now. Farley built his entire career and brand around being the funny fat guy who didn't care what people thought about him and he's considered a comedy legend.

McCarthy does the same thing and she's raked over the coals for it all the time. There's definitely some misogynistic tones to it...

Not everybody totally loved Farley either. I'm sure back then people found him loud, obnoxious and over bearing. Same in principle with McCarthy. I don't have much experience watching McCarthy in her more comedic stuff I've seen her in more her dramatic and toned down stuff where she's very good in. Both are very similar and use their bodies for their humor which is fine, it just comes down to whether you think they're funny or not.

It does make me appreciate John Candy a lot though. The man was just naturally funny and had a more wit and charm that people don't usually associate with fat comedians. He never relied on his body to get laughs where he could have easily been pigeonholed to do so. There's nothing wrong with physical humor as it's a different brand of humor, but Candy was very unique like that and that's admirable.

did she have surgery somewhere around the throat and thats why its covered in every shot? i am asking because she lost a lot of weight.

Yeah, something is definitely strange there.
