The Chanukah Thread

The original festival of lights. Have a good'un.

Our holiday starts sooner, lasts longer, has better food, and doesn't shove awful music and tv movies down your throat for a month. Boo-yah, chevrei.

I have invented a new, Chanukah-themed drinking game involving assigning other people shots via which side of the dreidel you land on. Am testing it out at a party tonight.

Also, this didn't go well.

Though in 2004, Channukah started Christmas Night.

You know, I've always wanted to try latkes, but I have no Jewish friends who can hook me up. Luckily I have the internet and a compulsion to experiment in the kitchen. I'll probably take a crack at making them this weekend. I'll let you know how that turns out.

So you're the mystery jew.

lol. Considering how much of Hollywood is populated by Jews it's a little surprising, actually. What's not surprising, though, is that most of those songs and movies are produced and created by Jews. I think the Chanukah story would make a good film, though. Seeing the Temple on the big screen would be cool. It was quite the epic building.

The Hollywood being so heavily populated by Jews is kind of overplayed (it's more of a stereotype than anything). And yeah ,there are plenty floating around out there, but it's not quite the domination that people assume. And keep in mind the people running the entertainment industry have an audience to satisfy, before anything. Otherwise what Chanukah movies there are wouldn't suck so hard (with the exception of the masterpiece "The Hebrew Hammer").

Infinitely nicer than the monstrosity standing there now.

Excuse me? That's a seriously messed up thing to say. What's sad is I came into this thread to say Happy Chanukah to my Jewish friends here on the Hype...and I read this crap.

Happy Chanukah to all the Jews here, even anyone who is bigoted. :whatever:

my keyboard was acting up, and leaving out words.
Heres the fixed version:

How people celebrate Chanukah:
Every Jew has a religous obligation to light the Chanukiah. this is a 9-pronged symmetrical candlabra. Every night people light the middle light, called the shamash. This serves no reliogious function but is there so people don't deive benifet from the lights alone, which is forbidden. on the first night people say 3 blessins and light the light on the far right. Every other night only 2 blessings are said and the number of lights reflectng the night are lit, starting with the new one. Afterwards a prayer , HaNairos Halalu (These Lights) is said. It states the reason for the lights. Then a hymn, Maoz Tzor (Rock of Ages) is sung.
In Grace after meals and the 3 daily prayers a special prayer is added, Al HaNeesim (for the Miracles).
Every day of Chanukah all Jews must say Psalms 113-118, a group Known as the Hallel (Praise).

To celebrate the miracle, which happened with olive oil, people eat food fried in olive oil.Jews of European descent (Azkanazic) Eat Latkes, Grated patatoes that are put in batter and Fried. Jews of Middle-eastern descent (Sephardic) prefer deep fried doughnut-like pastries called Sufganiot.

Anoher costum is to spin the Dreidel, a top like object. Inscribed on the dreidel's four sides are the hebrew letters Nun (n), Gimel (G), Heh (H) and Shin (SH). standing for Naes Gadol Haya Sham (A great miracle happened then)
In Isreal the letter Pe(p)is incribed instead of the Shin (sh) to stand for Po (Here), instead of Sham (There).
there is also a custom to eat cheese, but more on that later.

Those letters are similar to in Arabic. Arabic has letters called Nun and Shin, too. Is Nairos the specific part that means light? Light in Arabic is "noor". :yay:

I recently had a mitochondrial DNA test done that showed I'm in haplogroup W, which is seldom found in the Western Europe. It's a lot more common in Eastern Europe, the Near East and India. I found a database of haplotype W's who had posted their genetic markers(there's a handful of genetic markers that are used out of your overall DNA code to determine your haplogroup) that listed their country of origin. Most of the ones I found who had very similar genetic markers to me were in Poland, Hungary, Ukraine and Turkey. I know all of those places have had historical Jewish populations. On my mother's side our family has always said we are part Jewish from my maternal grandmother's family. Her(my grandmother) family is originally from South Carolina in which Charleston is one of the few places in the South that had a Jewish community back in the 19th century. It's highly probable I have some Jewish ancestry.

Woo, Chanukah's back! And I started it by getting a copy of "Theodore Rex" by Edmund Morris. How did everyone else celebrate the beginning of the Festival of Lights?

Listen, I understand Calling a mosque a "monstrosity" is offensive, however, Mt. Moriah is Judiasm's most holy site. Having any bdy building except the Holy Temple, whether it's a Mosque, Church, Supermarket, Factory, Orphanage, or Homeless Shelter is offensive to Jews. It has nothing to do with the fact it's a Mosque.

Yup.
BTW, the Arabic alphabet comes from the Arimiac Alphabet, which was also the source of rthe modern Hebrew alphabet, except Hebrew is much closer.
The letter I mentioned above, pe, looks so close to Arab Fa'
See lso ل compared to ל

I understand that about the Temple Mount it's just that it's a holy site to us as well. I'm sure you're familiar with the traditions as to why. There has to be a way to share. :o

Cool info about the alphabets! I know there are a lot of similarities between the two languages, like I know the word for day is the same: Yaum/yom.

Edit: Isn't the general Orthodox opinion based on the Talmud that the Third Temple is to be built in the time of the Messiah? As a Muslim, if the Messiah shows up then I have no problem whatsoever with tearing down Al Aqsa to build the Third Temple. Truthfully, there is nothing in Islamic scriptures(Qur'an OR Hadith) that says it's forbidden to remove Al Aqsa. Nor do the Hadith(which elaborates on the Islamic idea of Messiah) say anything one way or the other about the reconstruction of it during the time of the Messiah. Of course, Muslims, like Christians believe the Messiah to be Jesus/Isa ibn Maryam(pbuh) however the concept of what that means is more like the Jewish concept of the Messiah. Not the Christian concept of the Messiah as the "savior" from sin. Oh, and I don't know if people realize this since a lot of Muslims won't admit it but I will: the Qur'an says that the Jews shall return to Israel and that it is God's will that they gather there again before the end times.

Happy Chanukah to all the Jews on the board....who as far as I know are still only composed of Shemtov.

Fun Fct about Chanukah: It is only as well known to non-Jews s it is because it is around Christmas. It actully isn't mentioned anywhere in the Tanakh (Jewish Bible)
