Or he was half asleep when posed. Some cats are so placid that you can do anything with them when they're drowsy. I used to stack things on my (late, great) cat Sammy and take photos of him while he was drowsy. He would be slightly annoyed but if I didn't disturb him much he'd let me do it and just glare at me.
