The Get Down will focus on 1970s New York — broken down and beaten up, violent, cash strapped — dying. (Watch the teaser trailer, above.) Consigned to rubble, a rag-tag crew of South Bronx teenagers are nothings and nobodies with no one to shelter them — except each other, armed only with verbal games, improvised dance steps, some magic markers and spray cans. From Bronx tenements, to the SoHo art scene; from CBGBs to Studio 54 and even the glass towers of the just-built World Trade Center, The Get Down is a mythic saga of how New York at the brink of bankruptcy gave birth to hip-hop, punk and disco — told through the lives and music of the South Bronx kids who changed the city, and the world … forever.

Definitely keeping my eye on this.

New trailer is out and it looks great.

I know, I'm pissed I can't post it here because of the f-bomb or two.

OMG. That trailer…love.

Just watched the trailer and it looks interesting.

Watch: Baz Luhrmann On Prince's Unreleased Song For 'The Great Gatsby,' 'The Get Down,' More In 56-Minute Talk

At the moment for Luhrmann, his focus is on his upcoming Netflix series, "The Get Down," which will take audiences back to the '70s music scene in New York City. And one surprising contributor is Nas, who the director credits for being heavily involved and writing the rhymes for the central narrator.

"One of the things which I don’t think anyone knows, because it's not in the trailers — and we've been doing this for about a year now — is that one of the characters goes on and we discover that he’s actually a successful rap star in the '90s, and he narrates it through rhyme, through rap, on stage, in a sort of Madison Square Garden… It's somewhere between pure rap narration and a sort of Greek chorus comment, and we use it a lot throughout," he said. "Nas has been this other huge creative force in the production and it's been playing really, really successfully."

Gonna have to read that later.

Was looking forward to it but reviews are saying its just another Vinyl but even more expensive.

I didn't watch Vinyl, but Im currently watching the first ep. It's way too stylized for my liking. It is Baz Lurhman and it's only the first, 90 min, episode; but Im not interested.

SO much potential in a tv show about the birth of Hip Hop, but this is just ugh so far

The 2nd half of the first episode really picks up

But it's still a bit too stylized

Watched the first two episodes which were ok. It is better than vinyl.

Not sure why HBO and Netflix are spending insane amounts of money on 20th century music shows though.

Finished binging it.

It's pretty good. It really does pick up in the 2nd half of the first part of the season. Acting is fine, no one really incredible and no one really bad.

The problem is that this suffers from too many characters and storylines. They really should tighten up the story. I am also kinda disappointed that this isn't actually about "the birth" of hip hop. It's more about the rise. I wouldve loved to see more about what actually caused hip hop to start, rather than what caused it to rise to prominence.
Also the overstylized Lurmanisms hurt more than helped

It's fine but if they were to not make more of this I wouldnt really care.

I see why they split it into 2 parts, but I think they should just label it season 1 & 2 since this feels like a whole complete season anyway.

Yeah I really don't get it either.

Also how are they able to pump out such expensive shows?

It seems like music shows in general aren't doing good. I mean we've had Vinyl,Roadies and now this show it seems like there is some kind of disconnect.

I think it's because they're not really doing anything that cool.
Sex, drugs, and rocknroll.

At least Get Down is using a genre that hasn't really been explored that much in TV or films

The people who make this show sure love Can's Vitamin C. The song is in almost every episode.

The fact they are subscription based and don't have to fill a traditional weekly television schedule means they can spend large amounts of money on high original content.
