The Get Down - Baz Luhrmann/Shawn Ryan '70s Music Drama on Netflix

I loved The Get Down. It's my favorite thing I've watched all year.I've always wanted a show or movie similar to this. The Late 70s early 80s is a very interesting musical era.

It's a decent show, but I doubt it will pay off all the budget at the end. It's surprising how people don't watch the first six episodes, considering this is one of the most expensive tv series ever made. I think Netflix will cancel this if something doesn't change radically.

Part Two of The Get Down picks up in 1978, one year after the events of Part One. The sweeping upheaval of late 70s New York City finds an as-yet-unnamed new pop cultural force striking a new beat in the Bronx, while disco still reigns supreme. Our young lovers Books and Mylene are caught in the swirl of a looming cultural revolution destined to change everything about their world – but they have this moment to make their mark. Amidst the backdrop of a bankrupt New York City, ruthless gangsters and money-hungry record label bosses, they discover it’s only their creativity and love that will carry them through — and that they’ll sacrifice everything for their music, and each other.

I watched the second half of the first season. I didn't enjoy it as much as the first half, but it was still entertaining. The animated parts were a surprise. Maybe it was a way to save the money. With the costs, I would be surprised that they would do more of this show.

I just finished Part Two this morning. As a person who's not into Hip Hop, I found this show educating and I really enjoyed it too. I even started watching the Hip Hop Evolution documentary on Netflix to learn more about its origins in the Bronx how Afrika Bombaataa, Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash had their own territories, and then watching the last episode of Part Two of The Get Down further solidified my enjoyment of the show and the music in general.

I'm more of a Hard Rock, Metal, Progressive Rock kinda person but after watching Straight Outta Compton, I'm starting to gain a newfound respect for Hip Hop and Gangsta Rap's origins - and from watching The Get Down simply solidified my status as a student of music. ;)

Now, I think it's time I finally watch The Warriors movie! :p

Stupidity

Trying way too hard to be authentic. Too epic a scope for TV

I suppose I can agree with the stupidity part as I can't tell where all the money went. I guess the producer's gave themselves some very nice bonuses. :hehe:

Can't agree about trying too hard to be authentic or that the show's scope was too epic for tv...because again where did the money go?

They spent a lot of money trying to build authentic 70s sets and atomosphere that costs a lot of money. In addition to that this is what is from a Deadline article
However, Deadline has learned that given the way the deal is constructed, Netflix is paying more like $16M per episode — inclusive in the total is worldwide rights to the IP, and factored into that are the premiums that Netflix paid to acquire those rights exclusively.

Other costs include start-up, visual effects, music rights and production design. Of the $16 million, around $11 million was the final production expenses per episode, $3 million-$4 million over the initial budget following a string of filming shutdowns, staffing changes and script rewrites. When a TV drama is produced for $6M or higher an episode, it is considered expensive.
