The GOON

I'm sure there's another thread, but in any case, I love this series too:
- the oddball characters & the spooky gloomy world they inhabit
- the zany dark humor
- Powell's style,
- specially his great painted covers (wonderful colors).

Yeah, this is an original modern classic of pulp literature.

I've got the first three trades displayed proudly on my bookshelf. The mix of soft curvy characters with bleakly rich inking, gives the book vision.

As well the playfully dark humor contrasts the illustrations as well as I've seen.

And it's just plain fun.

I can't find the Trades (I Haven't looked overly hard) But Fear The Bat just goes on and on about how great the Goon is

I think I bought mine off of Amazon.com or one of the stores that advertise on Amazon.

Of course, I always see the trades at local book stores too (?) but they're more expensive.

My good friend Roughneck is right, I am a big fan of The Goon. I have all the TPBs so far, its been a great read. Its just so different than most stuff out there, especially since it has such a bizarre sense of humor that appeals to me. Eric Powell's work, be it the covers of panel art, is damn great.

Anybody that has an interest just go get you the Vol ) Rough Stuff TPB and just thumb through it. The art is a little rougher than the main book but it'll give you the dose of The Goon's world and humor. If you like it then keep getting them. If not just don't buy it. All you gotta do is give it a shot.

The Goon is by far my favourite indie comic, and it saddens me that I have to bump 2 year old threads and that no Goon thread has past a page in length... What the hell people?

The Goon is my favorite comic book of all time. I love it. The drama, the comedy, the art...great stuff. I kinda wish Dark Horse had the rights to the Spirit, as i'd love to see a Goon/Spirit cross over. That would be great.

ditto, every word.

ive only been keeping up with the ongoing through trades however, so im quite a few issues behind. :csad:

what'd everyone think of the Goon/Dethlok crossover?

I thought the crossover was awful, but then again I had no prior knowledge of Dethlok and they just came off as some terribly ******ed, unfunny caricatures of braindead metal fans, the art was crap... And yah, guess I'm picky.

I just caught up with my Goon readings, and apart from the aforementioned crossover, was the last thing released the 10 year anniversary, is the ongoing done for good... Any prospects for it to start up again?

yeah i was extremely disappointed by the crossover as well. but, like, you i had little knowledge of dethlok and wasn't really all that interested anyways. i did like they tried to blend the two styles of animation together though. i just dont think it worked as well as it sounded on paper. :o

Well, Dethklok is supposed to be a parody on heavy metal bands. They basically live out the stereotypical things associated with the genre of metal. As a metal fan, i think the show is hilarious.

I loved the cross-over, especially Franky's reaction to seeing them for the first time. And it's always a pleasure to see Peaches Valentine.

I imagine that the on-going is going to start up again after October. The 9th trade is coming out in October which concludes what Dark Horse calls "The Goon Year". If that's the case, i like how they did it. They're allowing readers, especially new ones, to catch up before continuing. The Anniversary issue was good, but there's more to tell, i think. So i guess in the coming months, we'll find out.

UPDATE: Just checked Dark Horse's website. Apparently, i was right. November 25th sees the release of The Goon #33, featuring disgruntled dentists, sentient manatees who act as secretaries, and aliens. 40 pages, for $3.50.

awesome, i get some time to catch up.

so any further word on the animated movie coming up? i remember seeing a couple screens a while back and being extremely pleased with the style. but i havent heard anything since.

Back again to proclaim my stance as a Goon supporter. Some of u guys need to seek out the one shot "Satan's Sodomy Baby", its insane. And don't forget to snag the The Goon's Chinatown Hardcover.

As for the Dethklok crossover take CrimsonMist's word for it. Dethklok (the band) has an animated show called Metalocalypse which as he already said has the band members being some stereotypical metal band guys. Its a pretty funny show, I made sure to catch a few episodes prior to the release of this one-shot just so I could know what they were about. The one-shot represented them to a T. The art was a blend between the two worlds of The Goon and Metalocalypse which worked for me. It was a way to stay true to both properties.

Sorry some of u guys weren't pleased by the crossover, unless some of u guys prefer a book fulla Albatross' tightey whiteys plastered all the way through.

just finilshed the most recent TPB, Those That Is Damned, and it was ****ing fantastic. it was just so short it was actually a bit maddening. and although i do enjoy the short stories put in the back, i would gladly, easily, trade in the majority of those for some more issues. nobody does it like Powell.

Nah man. Vol.9: Calamity of Consciousness came out about 2 weeks ago! It was awesome, though one of the most pivotal returns in The Goon was one issue. It was so brief that the emotion was underwhelming. It was still a great read though.

But i agree about vol. 8. Those short stories at the end, where good, could have been excluded for another issue.

Can't wait for November when the monthly picks up again.

oh thank god! :woot: i was hoping i was wrong but was too lazy to check. :oldrazz: gonna have to make another stop by the comic book shop to pick up Vol. 9. either way, reading Vol. 8 really reminded me of why The Goon is probably my favorite comic ever.

Yea, you HAVE to get it!:woot: And while you're at it, if you haven't read it yet, see if your shop has the "Satan's Sodomy Baby" one-shot that Fear The Bat mentioned above. It's hysterical. It was supposed to be Goon #18, but, according to the maybe-fictional circumstance spoken of in Goon, vol. 5, it was held off from being published and eventually came out as a one-shot. It is one of the funniest comics i've ever read.

did that come out last week?

no, it came out a few years ago. Really worth tracking down.
oh my god, i totally missed that. i thought it was a joke that he just references. i didnt know that there was an actual issue. yeah ill have to find that for sure now. wonder how much it'll run, price-wise.

As far as the story goes, it's great. But the book itself is advertized poorly. That's the trouble with indie comics. Whenever they put out something good it usually ends up with little notice because it is advertized poorly and no one really knows it.
