How can they drop the video game aspect? The whole movie's premise rested on "what if your favorite arcade game was a recruitment tool to an intergalactic starfighter squadron and you just got the high score?". It was essentially a video game come to life. And what better time to use that concept than now, when video games are visually and physically realistic as they are? They actually use video game-like simulations for training in the military so as Pink Ranger pointed out, it makes perfect sense.
It bugs me when core elements of stories are tossed aside these days in remakes, reboots, and sequels because they're seen as passé. It's the most important element of the whole damn thing. If you don't like it, why bother making it at all? Why make a superhero movie when you're ashamed of the concept of superpowers or colorful costumes, or a Hellraiser movie if you hate sadomasochism? It's freakin' stupid.
