Former Wipeout Developers Working On Successor, Searching For Publisher. September 24, 2014 . 4:00pm

“It is a ‘Huge’ project and not one that we can do without help—so we are being brave and aiming high,” say R8Games, developers of Formula Fusion.

[YT]MPnkFTXsG6c[/YT]

R8Games is an independent developer founded in 2014, and consists of staff members that previously worked on the Wipeout franchise. Recently, the developer revealed their new project—tentatively titled Formula Fusion—which looks very much like a Wipeout-inspired anti-gravity racer. You can view a trailer for it above.

Formula Fusion may not end up being a strictly indie game, though. A member of the R8Games team that goes by the online handle “MrFisty” has been discussing the game on the Wipeout Zone forums, which is one of the most committed Wipeout communities on the net. In a recent post on September 19th, MrFisty revealed that the trailer you see above is more of a visual prototype being used to attract attention from publishers.

“It was actually created (in a few months I might add) to stir things up with publishers, to generate interest and also to provide funding opportunities—in the same way a ‘pilot’ may be used for films with investors,” MrFisty wrote. “It is a ‘Huge’ project and not one that we can do without help—so we are being brave and aiming high.”

He continued, “Things have changed in the games industry now. ‘Very few’ publishers actually believe in AG Racing as a valid next gen genre—so we are trying to convince people of the ‘potential’, and to set up a studio staffed with other ex-Wipeout devs, (with some new Wipeout dev talent of course) to hopefully carry the torch again. But this time being much more open with the community.”

Music for Fomula Fusion is being composed by Dub Fx, a band based in Melbourne.

The Studio That Gave Wipeout Its Unique Look Is Working On Formula Fusion. October 6, 2014 . 9:01am

Formula Fusion, the upcoming futuristic racer being created by a team of former Wipeout developers, will feature graphic design by The Designers Republic.

Formula Fusion, the upcoming futuristic racer being created by a team of former Wipeout developers, will feature graphic design by The Designers Republic, a graphic design studio that helped set the tone and aesthetic of the Wipeout games during the franchise’s infancy back in the PSOne days.

Developer R8 Games say that The Designers Republic will “work side by side with the developers to promote and establish the visual style design aspects for the game”.

“I always said we’d never do another Wipeout. After Wip3out, the third instalment, with the original team dispersing if not already long gone, the Idea was degenerating into a marketing led franchise—from our perspective—an ever decreasing circle of senseless reiteration cranked out for cash,” says Ian Anderson, founder of The Designers Republic.

He continued, “The difference for us with Formula Fusion is the return to values behind the game—the desire to make it, and the community aspect—the desire to not only play it, but to contribute to creating it.”

Formula Fusion, which is currently in development for PC, will supposedly introduce a number of enhancements over the Wipeout series, including craft and technology customization and a track editor. At the moment, the game is still in pre-production and will be targeted at PC, with console versions to follow later.

Formula Fusion is planned for Steam Early Access release in June 2015, with the full version of the game scheduled for a Q2 2016 release.

Wipeout Spiritual Successor Formula Fusion Will Turn To Kickstarter For Funding. October 28, 2014 . 8:27am

Prior to announcing their Kickstarter, R8 said they were facing difficulties finding a publisher that has confidence in the futuristic racing genre.

[YT]K5lUBN8EjZQ[/YT]

In a new developer diary, Ian Anderson from design studio The Designers Republic talks about the studio’s involvement with Formula Fusion, a futuristic racer intended to serve as a spiritual successor to Wipeout. As you may recall, The Designers Republic was the studio that gave Wipeout its identifiable look.

The clip, embedded above, will be part of developer R8 Games’ forthcoming Kickstarter campaign, which will go live in two weeks. Prior to announcing their Kickstarter, R8 said they were facing difficulties finding a publisher that has confidence in the futuristic racing genre.

R8 Games have already begun discussing some of the features they have planned for the game’s crafts, that they will hopefully be able to implement. On Facebook, the studio stated: “You will be able to fully customise your craft; skins and components, through the garage. You will also be able to sell your craft to the community through the auction rooms (at least that’s the plan).”

“We want to encourage community ownership and creativity. Our experience with Midnight Club will help with this aspect.”

Formula Fusion Developers State Their Goals For The High-Speed Racer. November 10, 2014 . 8:30am

In the near future, R8 plan to launch a Kickstarter campaign for the game, but prior to that, they’ve published a pitch video stating their goals.

Formula Fusion, an upcoming spiritual successor to Wipeout, is early in development at indie studio R8 Games. In the near future, R8 plan to launch a Kickstarter campaign for the game, but prior to that, they’ve published a pitch video stating their goals.

R8 say that PC will be the lead platform for the game, and that the plan is to release it via Early Access in June 2015. The full version of the game is planned for release sometime in March 2016, if all goes according to plan.

Formula Fusion, R8 say, will adopt a visual style similar to Blade Runner. The game is being described as an edgy, “near-future” anti-gravity racer, rather than far-future sci-fi. The “formula” in the title refers to Formula 1 racing, which the developers say has been influential during Formula Fusion’s development, in terms of craft design as well as the team aspect of F1 racing.

Features being planned for Formula Fusion include: 21 tracks, 2-player team co-op, craft customization, a degree of track customization, 5 different race craft classes, weapons, and more. You can learn more about what features the team is thinking of in the video above.

This Is Hopefully How Wipeout Spiritual Successor Formula Fusion Will Look And Play. January 11, 2015 . 2:00pm

Formula Fusion, a spiritual successor to Wipeout, created by former developers of that series, is now up under Concepts on Steam Greenlight. Additionally, a gameplay concept movie is available for viewing as well.

As the concept movie points out, the footage you see isn’t representative of final gameplay, merely a teaser meant to illustrate what the game will hopefully look like and how it will play. In the past, R8 have stated that they are drawing inspiration from the handling of Wipeout 2097, but this, too, could change.

Formula Fusion is in development for PC. A “pre-release” build of the game is planned for this June.

Formula Fusion, A Racer By Former Wipeout Developers, Is On Kickstarter. April 29, 2015 . 11:01am

Formula Fusion, a futuristic racer that’s intended to give players the same sensation as a Wipeout game, now has a Kickstarter campaign.

[YT]iASsC2Du8R4[/YT]
Formula Fusion, a futuristic racer that’s intended to give players the same sensation as a Wipeout game, now has a Kickstarter campaign. After months of planning, developer R8 Games have launched their crowdfunding effort, with the goal set at £35,000. As of press time, the game is very close to making that goal.

As previously reported, Formula Fusion is being developed by R8 Games, who have former Wipeout developers on their team. The game is being made in collaboration with The Designers Republic, the graphic design studio known for giving the Wipeout series its visual identity. They’ve also managed to enlist the aid of Dub FX and CoLD SToRAGE, who have worked on Wipeout soundtracks in the past.

The goal for Formula Fusion is to create a futuristic racer with eight tracks and local and online multiplayer using the £35,000. R8 claim that they are confident they can get a version of the game running on Steam Early Access with one complete track using the 35k, too, and that this will allow them to leverage investments from other sources (such as pre-orders) to push on with a more fully-featured release.

Formula Fusion is in development for PC, with more features, tracks, and platform options available as stretch goals. In order to net yourself a copy of the game when it launches, you’ll need to contribute at least £20 to Formula Fusion’s Kickstarter campaign. If you contribute £60, you’ll get a special boxed edition of the game along with a number of bonus items that you can read about on the Kickstarter page.

Wipeout Fans, What Do You Think Of This Formula Fusion Footage?. May 11, 2015 . 5:31pm

Pre-alpha footage from the upcoming Wipeout-like racer.

[YT]nIoKLAXmq64[/YT]
R8 Games, the developers of futuristic racer Formula Fusion, recently showed off in-progress pre-alpha gameplay footage from the upcoming game. This footage, which can be watched above, was meant to show off how the game will handle in general, and naturally everyone that watched it had an opinion on how it looked.

This is great for R8, because the studio is attempting to build Formula Fusion up to be something of a spiritual successor to Sony’s Wipeout series. Following the swath of opinionated feedback in response to the video, the devteam posted a response on the game’s development blog.

“Basically we have been creating a hybrid system that combines the physics side of [Unreal 4] with a spline system (there have been more than a few editor quirks to iron out). The floatiness of the craft will come from adjusting the ‘springs’ we have applied to the body—this is a process we are now going through. The way the camera feels, the way the craft feels the way the track feels are all to be refined now.

“The spring system we have in place was created by our programmers and we now need to create a system to allow designers to make incremental changes/tweaks. The speed we have right now is close to ridiculous and the speed blur is experimental – lots of balancing to be done.”
R8 say the will update the gameplay clip with another version sometime this week. Formula Fusion is currently in development for PC.

Formula Fusion Will Debut On Early Access This July. May 15, 2015 . 1:32pm

Formula Fusion will get its very first public release at the end of July.

[YT]2exjKNX0LTY[/YT] Formula Fusion will get its very first public release at the end of July, developer R8 Games have announced. The game will make its debut via Steam Early Access.

The Early Access build of Formula Fusion will comprise a “polished demo” with a single track and craft AI. It is meant to represent a vertical slice of the game, and everyone that has paid for the PC version will receive a Steam key.

The full release of Formula Fusion will consist of eight tracks, and local and online multiplayer. Any content beyond that is still up in the air, depending on if and how R8 secure funds for additional development resources.
