Playstation The Official Playstation 5 Thread

Gotta make up for all the game flops somehow huh. Some might blame the currency for being weak too.

this is so stupid. Ps5 is 4 year old tech and Sony wants to charge you MORE for it.
I cant wrap my head around this decision when allegedly they already struggle a bit selling the PS5 in Japan.
Why do this when Nintendo is most likely revealing the Switch 2 this year?
Sony already will have a hard time keeping up with the Console, but with this decision...Nintendo will easily overtake them in no time.

they also have the Ps5 pro incoming this year. The regular Ps5's price should have already been cut to $400 so that the pro is gonna take its spot. If they launch the pro at $600, everybody is gonna remember the Ps3 and its ugly price tag and it's gonna turn off a lot of people from the playstation ecosystem.

Hmmm, these prices always go up and down though.

When the Ps5 pro comes out, expect those prices to drop down, just like when the PS5 slim came out. The original model had noticeable price cut.

this generation, these prices have gone up and stayed up. after they went down, they went back up and the prices were never cut again.

the pro is supposed to be right around the corner. if the prices are gonna drop down when it comes out, then they wouldn't have raised the prices now.

No, they've cut the price several times from my recollection (holiday 2023 + early 2024). I'm pretty sure they have done that when PS5 slim was coming out and there were also holiday sales.

The thing is if someone is planning to get a PS5 by getting it through a cheaper price, they would need to watch out for price cuts, and they need to be quick buying a ps5 before the price goes up.

Also you do know that the PS5, is being sold by Sony for a loss? And they don't earn their profit from ps5 console sales. They get profit from the games. So this price increases don't surprise me anymore.

You're confusing price cuts with sales. If the PS5 goes on sale, that sale price is temporary and it will eventually go back to the retail price. If the PS5 get's a price cut, that's now the new retail price and normally (for the most part anyway with these consoles) it won't go back up to the original retail price. This is a situation where they are raising the retail price to a higher price than it was 4 years ago which is pretty baffling. Especially when it's mid lifecycle and there's reports of the PS5 pro being released.

yeah that's what I meant when I said they went back up and the prices were never cut again. the cuts were temporary, but the hikes were permanent.

well that's just what going on sale means. temporary discounts. it's not the same as a permanent price cut which is what @Venom 1988 is explaining to you. the only time that happened this generation was the Spider-Man 2 bundle at $450, but after that went out of stock, people were stuck again with the $500 box.

Nope. You are absolutely wrong about that. Ps5 stopped selling at a loss 3 years ago. they have been profiting for the vast majority of this generation.

I am not saying it's surprising, I am saying it's stupid.

There aren't making these consoles more expensive just to be expensive though.

I understand it might be frustrating for those who are saving up, and then ends up seeing these new prices, but there's probably internal reason behind these price increases.

how do you know that? based off of everything Sony has done this generation - making everything more expensive from their games, to psplus, to the Ps5 itself, I am inclined to believe they are just participating in corporate greed.

they will use inflation as their excuse just like all the other companies when really (as it has been proven) they are doing it because they know that they can just get away with it.

If you raise the price you sell fewer consoles which means fewer game sales.

Obviously.

The reasoning they are using is due to the Yen decreasing in value. They're prioritizing profits over their customers.

You are assuming these prices were raised because of greed and Sony just shooting themselves in the foot by alienating buyers - when Sony has no big game this year aside from Helldivers 2 and Concord just flopped. And who knows when will their next bigseller arrive?

Okay I went back to read the report and it says:

“Given the recent challenging external environment, including the current fluctuations in the global economic situation and the impact it will have on our business, we have reached this decision,”

“We appreciate your understanding so that we can continue to provide our customers with the best gaming experience and operate a stable business.”

This seems like a valid explanation.

I can say the same thing about you. You're assuming they did this because they have a neutral, economical, and honest reason for the increases in price but all the evidence has been pointing to the contrary.
Sony just shooting themselves in the foot by alienating buyers
alienating buyers? when it comes to traditional video game consoles and third party support, consumers have the option of either playstation or Xbox and it's common knowledge that the latter has been struggling to compete. the vast majority of buyers are going one way, if they are interested in spending hundreds of dollars in the first place.

Helldivers 2 was a sleeper hit, a breakout success that took everyone by surprise. Concord is the flop of the generation sure but a lot of people - yourself included - aren't interested in these types of games. what does Sony's next bigseller have to do with anything anyway? The Ps5 was sold out and scalped for a whole 2 years even without having a consistency of bigsellers compared to last generation.

it sounds like you'll believe anything Sony says, to be honest.

I'm not responding to every response you've made. I'm only responding to the last part.

Just because I'm not calling them "stupid" for price increases, it doesn't mean I automatically believe everything Sony says. You are not new here, I've complained about Sony several times in this thread (lack of first party games, State of Play, etc). I've recently spoken about Concord flopping in the other thread.

And yes, their explanation was valid enough. I can believe that if I want to.

That’s a big rise so late in the gen, and and with the Pro around the corner. Japanese fans don’t seem to have been treated the best this gen by Sony.

looks like a recipe for disaster if you ask me.

sounds like an easy way to avoid accountability when I've proven you wrong so many times. you are not obligated to respond, so why are you bothering to respond to me at all?

go ahead and believe them if you want to. I am not sitting here trying to tell you what you should and shouldn't believe; that's your choice, do what you want. I am just saying that they do not deserve you giving them the benefit of the doubt. that's my opinion.
