The Orphan Works Act (S.2913) And its companion bill (H.R. 5889) Have since been endorsed by the Senate Judiciary Committee and are now on their way to the full Senate.
I strongly urge you to contact your State representatives and ask them to oppose the Orphan Works Act and request open hearings.

Dude I've written everyone of my reps and the candadites and told them of my disgust.

All of us should be very afraid.

^ Thank you KAD.
Ive been emailing both my Senators (Corker and Alexander) everyday for almost a week now,.And as I told them, I'm going to keep writing until I get a response.

I'm with you Ed

Hypsters support your local Artist Send a letter to your senators/reresentatives demanding the orphan works legislation be stopped

Or there may not be a fan art forum someday

This is freakin crazy. WTF!!!

I would write but I'm from Canada, but this isn't going to be any good for us either.

That's seriously messed up. Better not pass...(being only 17, I dunno how much I can do)

Writing can't hurt let them know this is a global issue and that creatives are a global group

So where do I find an address to write to? That's what I'm not sure about.

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard and I've seen articles trying to justify it.

Hmmm...I might have to check with Capic and see if they have anything to say.

Alright I found a link that gives international artists addresses to send write to.

Addresses

Also here's what CAPIC (Canadian Association of Photographers and Illustrators) has to say.

Good article  I know that similar laws are being passed in Europe as well. Its downright heinous.
I have another scenario for you.

The Register herself, Marybeth Peters has gone on record saying that a copy-written/registered work could mistakenly be classified as orphaned. That premise in conjunction with a limitation on statutory damages is frightening.
When a lawsuit isn't even going to make a dent in the profits someone made off your stolen work,Its going to set a precedent when it comes to compensatory damages in terms of a penalty.

This is insane! I'm putting a link to this thread in my sig.

Edit: Here is the link to a form letter on the IPA website if you haven't seen it already.

^ Another good link and a good idea Afroman.
Time is not on our side people. This bill is might come up in the next few weeks.

the form letter has alot of language that pertains to international artists, so if anyone is going to use it be sure to edit it so that it applies to you.

^Thats another part of the overall problem with this legislation.Artists globally who aren't even aware of this act are more vulnerable to infringement.A painter in Calcutta needs to register his work for an American copyright? Its devious

Just a heads up. This legislation was DOA when it hit the house. :woot:
Expect it to come back in some form or another later on down the road.
But for now, minor victory winky :cwink:

I'm sure if anyone was actually concerned that this could have passed, it would have been bigger news.

The simple fact that it made it to the house should've had anyone interested concerned. What concerns me is that every single art related web page I frequent was up in arms over the matter, except for the hype.
