The Reason Why a Schwarzenegger-less Reboot Never Works

After returning home from a screening of the newly rebooted Conan the Barbarian I sat down to write a review for my column and realized, that I was absolutely indifferent to the film. While the picture was playing I enjoyed it, but the minute I left the theater a faint sadness drifted over me. I’d been sucked in to paying for a sub-par ‘re-imagining’ of one of my favorite films. It reminded me of the same feeling I had upon exiting the theater from Predators last summer

Seems like you put Arnold on too high of a pedestal. I love me some Arnold, but that doesn't mean another actor can't come along and do a better job.

The original Conan was great, and the remake was just as good. At the time of the original, Arnold was possibly the only one who could have portrayed the character, or possibly Lou Ferrigno, and we all saw how Ferrigno handled Hercules.

Close thread.
Especially considering this is just poorly veiled attempt to advertise his site (which I'm fine with, but just be honest about it; these attempts at subtlety are insulting).

I have to agree.

So far there's only one example , lol, and most of us haven't had a chance to see it.

I don't know... let's wait after the release of the Total Recall-remake

I like Arnold but I can't say a remake/reboot/reimagining of anything he was in is a failure without him. If it fails it's because of poor writing or acting, directing, editing, any number of possiblities. Very few movie roles can be defined by the actor and not replaced in some re-do.

lol, there is a HUGE difference between having a link in your SIG, and making an entirely new (useless) thread solely to do try and get hits to your website. There already is a Conan thread, on the first page when he made this no less, that he easily could have posted to, simply saying "hey guys, i got a site where i critique films, heres a link to my Conan crit if anyone is interested". But he didn't, and this type of "subtle" advertising annoys the heck outta me. Its like those radio segments the morning DJs do to sell weight loss formulas or whatever; trying to make it look like a legitimate segment to their show, but its nothing more than a damn real time commercial. Idunno, its just a pet peeve.

It isn't just about Conan though, its about Schwarzenegger-less movies.

Its kind of true though. Look at all the Arnold movies with out Arnold in them:

Predators (Garbage)
Conan (looks like garbage)
Total Recall (sounds like its going to be garbage)
Terminator Salvation (Garbage)

Now granted this is just my little opinion, and hey the Total Recall remake can still be awesome, but Arnold movies without Arnold have kind of sucked.

And, I get that its because of the writting and stuff, and Arnold isn't exactly the greatest actor ever (he's not even a good actor) and he has been in some turds as well (I'm looking at you Terminator 3).

I liked Predators, Total Recall looks pretty good, but I think it's his presence that has been sorely missed since his heyday. Honestly, and I'm one of the most hardcore Schwarzenegger fans you can find, The Rock has taken his place now. A year ago, no, that would be blasphemy, but after The Other Guys, Faster and Fast Five he is the man now.

I liked Predators. I thought it was better than Predator 2 anyhow and the Total Recall movie looks good, so does Conan but not having seen either one of them yet I can't judge them. Terminator Salvation was alright but definitely a let down. That was a case of with or without Arnold it probably wouldn't have made a difference though.

While Rock has made a great return with Fast Five i think that Vin Deasel was able to be in a bigger list of great and entertaining movies, The Rock was never in a great movie like terminator or Conan while Vin Deasel was in Pitch Black

Milius & Poledouris were much bigger reasons why the original Conan movie was great. Arnie's fine but he wasn't even the best thing about that movie.

Guys you are forgetting another Arnold film being rebooted, Commando.

Comparatively, where the Milius and Schwarzenegger Conan was given ample time for quiet and more thoughtful moments, Marcus Nisepel's and Jason Momoa's Conan was always in a rabid action mode; more arrogant, thoughtless, and after a while, his monotone and lack of character made him too boring and too cardboard-like to sympathize with. The lines he spat out were all barbaric machismo and of vengeance and savagery, which after a while began to sound annoying and awfully corny.

Are you trying to infect us with a trojan or something?

Meh. I gotta disagree. I liked Predators. And while Terminator Salvation was a let down, at least we got two seasons of a awasome tv show.
