Joe Penhall to Adapt The Road
Source: Variety April 2, 2007

Screenwriter Joe Penhall has been set to adapt The Road, Cormac McCarthy's post-apocalyptic novel that was chosen as the latest selection of the Oprah Winfrey book club. John Hillcoat will direct.

The book was acquired last fall by producers Nick Wechsler and Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz.

The story is about a father who transports his son to safety following a nuclear explosion and battles starving stragglers and marauding packs of cannibals in his way.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Viggo Mortensen is in early talks to star in the big-screen adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's best-selling novel "The Road."

The story, about a man and his young son traveling through a desperate, post-apocalyptic world, is being adapted by Joe Penhall ("Enduring Love").

Aussie John Hillcoat ("The Proposition") will direct. Mortensen's involvement may require some tricky scheduling since the actor is next set to head to New Mexico to shoot the Ed Harris-directed "Appaloosa."

I loved the book, but I doubt the movie will be an accurate adaptation.

Apocalyptic Thriller The Road to the Big Screen

Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban's 2929 Productions is gearing up for an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's (No Country for Old Men) Pulitzer Prize-winning The Road, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Dimension Films is in final negotiations to distribute the apocalyptic thriller in North America.

The film, based on McCarthy's 2006 best-seller, centers on a father who walks alone with his son through a ravaged postwar American landscape in search of civilization. While Viggo Mortensen has been attached to play the lead role, no deal is in place, and his participation had not been decided by press time.

John Hillcoat (The Proposition) will direct from a script adapted by Joe Penhall. Marc Butan, Wagner and Cuban will executive produce through 2929, and Nick Wechsler (North Country), Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz will serve as producers.

The feature is scheduled to begin production in January

This could be interesting, I like Viggo and while i wasn't a huge fan of the Proposition it was nicely shot.

Charlize Theron Hits The Road

Charlize Theron will star opposite Viggo Mortensen in the big screen adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's bestselling novel The Road for 2929 Entertainment. Dimension Films will distribute domestically.

The story centers on a man who embarks on a nightmarish road trip after a nuclear explosion in an attempt to transport his son to safety while fending off cannibals.

Australian helmer John Hillcoat (The Proposition) is directing from a screenplay by Joe Penhall.

Theron, who will play the wife of Mortensen's character, will be seen mostly in flashback. Although the role is small, Theron joined the project because she's a big fan of the book -- published by Knopf in 2006 -- and was eager to reteam with producer Nick Wechsler, with whom she worked on 2000's The Yards.

Shooting is set to begin next month.

With Hillcoat directing this I'm interested and I believe my brother got the book for Christmas.

I've heard good things about the book, might try and pick it up.

Love No Country! Love Viggo! Love The Proposition! Love post-apocalyptice stories!

I'm all onboard for this filck.

Young Wolvie Hits The Road
Duvall, Pearce also rumored to be cast in post-apocalyptic pic.

US, January 29, 2008 - Kodi Smit-McPhee, the 11 year-old Aussie actor recently cast as young Logan in Fox's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, has reportedly been cast as Viggo Mortensen's son in the feature film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's post-apocalyptic novel The Road.

Smit-McPhee's casting was reported by Australia's The Daily Telegraph. He first gained notice for his role as Eric Bana's son in the Aussie drama Romulus, My Father.

In related news, The Pittsburgh Business Times reports that The Road will commence production next month in Pittsburgh for an eight-week shoot. (ProductionCharts.com adds that the film will also shoot for one week each in Oregon and Louisiana.) The paper confirmed the film's Pittsburgh stint with both production company 2929 Entertainment and the Pittsburgh Film Office.

The Times adds that the film, which stars Mortensen and Naomi Watts, has also cast Guy Pearce and Robert Duvall in unspecified roles. Pearce was rumored last fall as possibly replacing Mortensen in the lead role, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

Given that the novel is essentially a two-character tale, perhaps Pearce and Duvall will, like Watts' character, appear in flashback. Pearce previously worked with Road director John Hillcoat on The Proposition.

Nice find Donnie, don't think this is gonna be a cheery flick. :D

Colour me interested. Good director and Mortensen is good since Eastern Promises.

Most of all, I'm looking forward to the soundtrack by Cave and Ellis. Those dudes are ****ing geniuses.
