I find this to be incredibly stellar, considering the talent contributing to this miniseries. I can't imagine it will be on par with Stevens' original stories, but good grief does this look like it will be near-perfect. Cooke relaunched The Spirit with exceptional ability, and to know he has his hands on The Rocketeer is astounding. Mike Allred, Bruce Timm, Michael Golden, etc. I have already found what will replace FIRST WAVE after it ends in January. I love this book without having opened a single issue.

Mike Allred, Kurt Busiek, John Cassaday, Darwyn Cooke, Michael Golden, Gene Ha, Michael Kaluta, Garry Leach, Bruce Timm, Bill Willingham...and more?!?

:woot::woot::woot::woot:

That's some list of talent. With my pull-list dwindling ever slowly, this is so being added on. The prospects of this being great are so high. Cooke and Busiek can tell damn good stories. Kaluta's artwork lends itself perfectly to the character. As does Allred's and Timm's. Willingham and Cassaday have gorgeous artwork(the pulp related stuff in the first bunch of Planetary issues are awesome!). Gene Ha's artwork is pretty exciting to look at.

There's no reason for this not to be good. And though it may be a pipe-dream, some unnamed appearances by Doc Savage and The Shadow couldn't hurt, either.

Awesome news. So excited right now!

It can be awesome even though Dave Stevens is an incredibly hard act to follow. I always wished he did more with the character :csad:.

Yeah, there isn't one person listed in the creative department who I think can't deliver, but it is definitely a tough act to follow.

BUT... the pinnacle of my enthusiasm is stemming from a total wish fulfillment scenario that I finally see potentially happening.

I may very well be setting myself up for getting my heart ripped out, but since the soul of the original runs were loaded with pop culture and pulp hero cameos, here is my one fanboyistic hope: Darwyn Cooke has Cliff team up with The Spirit.

Fingers crossed.

As far as the art, itself, I love everyone attached and can see nothing but greatness coming from their involvement, but most of those guys are so stylized that it will be a massive directional shift from Stevens' pinup style. There isn't one panel in either of his minis that couldn't have... wouldn't have... been painted on the side of a bomber in WWII. That being said, I think the new teams' contributions are going to be mind blowingly good.

Thank God finally. I hope they go off of the notes he left behind. I want to see a follow up to the first series with Cliff returning home finally to Pete and Betty (who still should look like the late Betty Page) and take it from there. Even though for the most part his ideas for the ending of his comic series went straight into the movie. Which is also very much underrated.

I agree that using Stevens' notes would make a solid foundation; but as you said, a lot of his future story ideas were morphed into the screenplay for the film, so I would hope that if there isn't a wealth of new directions to choose from, they wouldn't veer toward redundancy.

And, I completely cosign that the film is agonizingly underappreciated. It's actually my favorite comic-to-film adaptation.

But, if at least one writer picks up where Betty left off in returning to the west coast, that's good enough for me.

Related-ish: I literally just won highest bidder on a Hebrew translation of what I think is the movie adaptation in 3D. It's definitely the Neal Adams art from the Disney US version of the 3D comic, but I'm anxious to see if there are any changes. I usually don't chase down foreign language comics too often, but I know some biblical Hebrew and love the Rocketeer, so I figured why the heck not...?

The team on this sounds outright insane. I usually wait for the trades of IDW series due to the price, but may opt on the singles for this. Either way, definitely checking it out.

Well, DC owns The Spirit, so unless there's a crossover team-up I don't see how that can happen.

It's still possible. In the original series, both Doc Savage and his crew and The Shadow make prominent appearances. But it is never said outright who they are. The Shadow was obvious. I had to read it a few times to realize it was Doc Savage and his buddies, notably Monk and Ham.

It's possible that for this series, they could team up Cliff and a domino masked/business suit attired hero, and have him be outright be called Denny, or Colt. Or, in the instance of Doc Savage, have them team-up and never give the character a name.

Though it's doubtful it'll happen, one of the things that made the original series fun was the reference to other pulp characters.

The crossover Stevens wanted to do but it never happened was The Rocketeer meeting GA Superman. He had the notes and story already plotted out but DC said no to the idea. It looked great from what I read.

Correct. I would never expect to see a fullblown "Denny Colt" versus the "Octopus" in "Wildwood Cemetery" being outright written, but the likeness of the Spirit as one of the teamups - if this series follows the previous minis AT ALL - is not out of the realm of possibility, thankfully.

I would also agree that it's not likely. However, seeing the name Darwyn Cooke in the creative slot gives me hope that this is an honest prospect. Not only does he love the Spirit, he easiliy strikes me as the type to 'get' the original Stevens stories and their endless use of pulp cameos.

If we can get page after page of Lamont Cranston (even referring to himself as "a shadow", I am byond hopeful one of the most successful talents to ever work on the Spirit can/would want to sneak him into a teamup with another golden age/pulp inspired hero.

My intent with this idea isn't to veer too off topic, but it's more based on my contemplating what the new writers could possibly do to recapture some of the greatness that Stevens filled his panels with, and cameos are a must. Which led me to consider the possibility that The Spirit may finally meet my other favorite character. Cooke's involvement sorta sealed the idea in my head.

I am a huge rocketeer fan...my main hobby is the rocketeer and been collecting for several years now (i will probably create a new thread in near future to show it off), but I dunno....I am just not that excited about the new mini-series...

Dark Horse was suppose to have their own rocketeer series a few years ago while dave stevens was alive...he stepped down to let DH continue the series, but they dropped the ball..since dave is not longer with us....i will miss his view on the stories and art design....

Ima say right now. There is absolutely no way this will touch what the late, great DAVE STEVENS did! That was an amazing set of comics. I have been a Rocketeer fan for about 15 years and I adore his original 8 issues. I WILL check this out, but I don't expect it to hold a candle.

since i am basically on "probation" for like a month for being a newbie, i cant really post much as in uploading pictures or other fun things which is unfortunate...because i want to upload my collection to show it to you guys...and a pretty cool dave stevens drawing that will be featured on an upcoming magazine...it has dave steven's last interview and an interview with dimaggio and bilson aka the writers of the rocketeer movie

i'm going to miss his rocketeer artwork....dave is the rocketeer, but the new series does have a few big names and i am sure they will try their best to bring the character back to life in a memorable and respectful way...

maybe, we will see thomas jane write something cool....he is a huge dave stevens fan

That's sick. Keep us updated on what's up with that magazine. I'd love to hear from the screenwriters after all this time. I love Stevens' work onThe Rocketeer and to see that 2011 is showing a resurgence of the character into new material is nothing but a great thing. I have no belief that it will match the original, but renewed approaches to the character and revisiting some of the creative minds in the same year is all good to me.

So would be releasing the film on BLU RAY!!! :argh:

Small update, but really worth the mention. Mike Mignola will be doing a pin-up for the series, and it's confirmed that Darwyn Cooke will be writing and illustrating a story. Sweet! Apparently #1 comes out in May. Can't wait!
I hope it is a mini series and not an ongoing. As I have said before but I just think the Rocketeer works better as a mini-series or a series of mini-series than an ongoing.

Lots of respectable names attached to this - that art is fan-freaking-tastic! I dare say Alex Ross is perfect for Rocketeer.

Looking forward to this!
