Sony Pictures Takes Woman Versus Shark Tale In The Deep

Source: Deadline
September 18, 2014

Sony Pictures has, according to Deadline, secured a new spec script today with In the Deep. Hailing from scribe Tony Jaswinski, the thriller is teased by the outlet as "'127 Hours' meets 'Jaws'" and is said to offer a protagonist in form of a woman in her 20s and an antagonist in the form of a great white shark.

The story takes place on a remote beach where the lead, having just lost her mother, is surfing. Her world soon turns to terror, however, when she finds herself just 60 feet from shore with a great white shark in the water below her.

Lynn Harris is attached to produce In the Deep alongside Matti Leshem.

It sounds like this one might move forward at the studio rather quickly, so check back for additional information as it becomes available.

Jaume Collet-Serra Circling Sony Shark Pic ‘In The Deep’

EXCLUSIVE: Jaume Collet-Serra is circling to direct In The Deep for Sony Pictures. This is the spec script by Tony Jaswinski that created a feeding frenzy last fall when Sony beat out three other studios to win the project. The film will be produced by former Warner Bros executive Lynn Harris and Matti Leshem; it was the first project they set up under their new producing shingle Weimaraner Republic Pictures.

At the time Deadline broke news of the spec, it was described as tonally similar to a cross between 127 Hours and Jaws, with a touch of Gravity thrown in for good measure. A young woman who is dealing with the recent death of her mother is surfing on an isolated beach and gets stranded 20 yards off shore on a buoy. What lies between her and the shore is a huge great white shark. It’s an emotional piece for a young twentysomething star.
Collet-Serra, the Spanish director who popped in the U.S. with Orphan, followed with three Liam Neeson films: Unknown, Non-Stop and Run All Night. No deal yet, but Collet-Serra has the offer and they’re in early talks. stay tuned. He’s repped by CAA and Management 360.

That poster horrifies me to no end.

**** sharks.

i watched the trailer yesterday. Looks good and the shark CGI looks great as well. Hoping this turns out to be a good film. Need more good shark films and less cheese like the horrible horrible scifi shark films such as the Sharknado series, sand sharks, megalodon vs series etc etc.

I hope the shark bites off her bikini.

Just watched the trailer for this. Looks real promising.

Good shark attack films are few and between.

The CGI shark (one shot aside) looks quite good. And Blake Lively (who is sometimes good and sometimes bland for me) looks like she's in "good mode" here.

And if I could watch bearded, half-naked Tom Hanks talk to a volleyball for most of a movie and enjoy it, then I suppose that I can bring myself watch bikini-clad Blake Lively battle a massive CGI shark. ;)

Looks really good from the trailer, and I jealous that shark gets to bite Blake Lively when I never will :csad:, though my bite would be more playful of course!

Ryan Reynolds is one very lucky man.

Looks like a good shark movie.

I like sharks so I kind of want to see this.

My only problem with that trailer was that weird misplaced voice-over.

Great white shark, of course. So innovative... not!
How about using the bull shark or the tiger shark for a change of pace. They can be quite the a**holes too. :o

But seriously, it's a decent trailer. I'm curious to see if Lively is able to carry an entire movie on her shoulders.

While Bull and Tiger Sharks are more, aggressive, by nature, I can see why they went with a Great White. One, they're bigger. And two, they're THE iconic shark, and it's easier to scare people with them.

These kinds of films are actually some of the few that can genuinely still terrify me. Even today, I still have trouble sitting through Open Water all the way through for example (it being based on a true story doesn't help in that regard either). I have to be in the right frame of mind at the time.

Looks good.

But then, I'm apparently the only person on earth who liked Open Water, so what do I know?

I did as well, unnerved the Hell out of me.

Yes! I knew there had to be someone else out there! I AM NOT ALONE.

I liked it too, I thought it was pretty well received but I might be wrong. Looking forward to the Shallows, also Meg lol

Yeah, I initially thought it was well received too, but anytime I ever mention it to anyone, people always say it's terrible. I don't know; I thought it was effective and terrifying.
