The Sorority Row Trailer

The first half of The Descent is awesome. Basically perfect. I don't want to spoil anything for you, but that film lost me completely after a certain point. Still worth viewing though.

Hmm, I'll try to check it out. I guess Marshall's best is Dog Soldiers then?

I'm interested in what he's doing next. It's with that Olga Kurylenko.

I'd rank 'em like this:

1. The Descent 5/5
2. Dog Soldiers 4/5
3. Doomsday 3/5

Haven't seen Doomsday. It looks a little too over the top for me. Dog Soldiers however is like a werewolf movie with an alamo Predator concept. My uncle and I love that movie. I just bring up the name Dog Soldiers and we both nod smiling.

Final one Sheet.

Watching Alexa Chung the Willis daughter was on (who has zero personality, and Alexa looked good) but anyway, the clip she was just overracting.

Most horror films do suck. That is a fact and they all do start to become the same generic predictable pieces of **** that has been going on for years. They never changed except a rare gem out of a pile of **** which hasn't happened since Scream. But there are probably other good horror films that I haven't seen. Anyone name me a good one from this decade?

Hardly a factual statement...merely the all too common opinion as fact type of statement around here.

And I can name tons, all of the SAW films, The Descent, both Jeepers Creepers films, The Ring, Orphan, The Hills Have Eyes, The Devil's Rejects, The Last House on the Left, Drag Me To Hell, 28 Days and Weeks Later, The Strangers, Funny Games...

Of course I can already see the response to this before it's even posted "OMG most/all of those suck..." and "OMG you called that SAW trash good!" etc...

which are purely opinion statements, opinions shared by many perhaps (which has nothing to do with making said opinion a fact, btw), but opinions none the less...and many of which just don't like the genre.

There are plenty of generic entries from every genre...there are a ton of generic love stories/romantic comedies, there are plenty of generic crime dramas, there are plenty of generic gun-blazing action movies...you can find it as easily in one genre as you can in the next. People just choose to focus on it the most in the genre(s) that they like the least.

I don't think this film looks like anything special by any means, but that hardly demonstates the so called "fact" that the entire genre consists of almost nothing but generic, interchangeable, terrible films. Even in the examples I gave, regardless of personal opinion of the quality of the films, they're very different films.

SORORITY ROW (Film Review)

Summit Entertainment is criticized for 'watering down horror' with their TWILIGHT franchise. Those critics will eat their words when they see SORORITY ROW, a full-on '80s slasher throwback with a high body count and black sense of humor.

A loose adaptation of the minor classic HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW (no head-in-a-toilet this time), it's the story of a Sorority prank gone wrong. With one of their own dead, the girls of Theta Pi are ready to confess. Lead sister Jessica (Leah Pipes) convinces them to hide the body instead, noting "I would rather not spend my child-bearing years in lock-up!"

Set to marry a Senator's son, Jessica and the rest of the girls have bright futures upon graduation. Unfortunately, a hooded maniac shows up with their murder weapon and begins picking them off one by one.

That's a standard slasher movie plot of guilt and revenge, but SORORITY ROW handles the material in a dark, amusing way. Director Stewart Hendler keeps things moving at a rapid clip and more importantly, remembers what most remakes of '80s classics forget: copious gore and nudity! His film has a fun HEATHERS Meets HALLOWEEN vibe. Writers Josh Stolberg & Peter Goldfinger make their girls distinct and likable--you want them to survive. Gino Crognale's FX completes the old school feel. His work is especially good in murders by bottle and corkscrew.

All the girls are stunning, so Rumer Willis wears big Velma Dinkley glasses to show she's the nerd, while Margo Harshman is fun as boozehound Chugs and Briana Evigan is the movie's slightly grimy conscience.

In these movies, there's always a *****-goddess for the audience to hate. Her death is the most gruesome--because her character is nasty. Think Nancy Allen in CARRIE and Rose McGowan in SCREAM, but here, you root for her! As Jessica, the catty alpha female, Leah Pipes steals the movie--it's her *****iness that keeps the other girls (none of whom she particularly likes) alive.

She identifies a victim by noting "I would know those ugly-ass shoes anywhere!", when a girl prays "Oh God, please don't let me get killed", Jessica snaps "stop giving Him ideas" and, when she thinks she knows who the killer is, proactively runs over them with her SUV!

The best surprise comes with Carrie Fisher as tipsy house mother, Mrs. Crenshaw. In '80s horror movies, a star would play a minor character like this in a glorified cameo--but Fisher makes Crenshaw a vital part of the film. Seeing a pistol-packing Princess Leia chase the killer with a double-barrel shotgun screaming "Come to Momma!" and assuring the girls that "He, she or It is about to get two rounds in the face!" is my favorite movie moment this year, bar none.

Mark Rosman, director of the original, executive produced.

Yes, we already established the good ones that came out this decade. And I didn't say all horror films suck. I said most of them do and there are some that are truly great. Like the ones you and others have mentioned which we've been over already.

I know some people act like their opinion on certain things are law and true with everyone having to follow them cause said person said so.

Not really. We just have different opinions on it and people assume we think we know everything because of what we say. We just simply state our opinions or are baffled how people can like ****.

I feel like this is a project where they took a bunch of "z-list" hot girls and put them in front of a camera, but I guess if they want to be in movies this is a start..

This movie looks stupid. Why would a guy stab a girl that is already dead? Stooopid. Plus, this has Audrina from the Hills in it...PASS.

Because one of the girls said to look for something sharp to cut up the body, this was still when it was a joke.

.

That's deal-breaker, ladies !

Nobody is forcing people to watch this film! Caveat emptor you pinheads!

I just saw a special preview screening of this.

I have never seen a movie get progressively more stupid as it went along, but it's too silly not to enjoy it on some level as it tumbles to the finale.

Leah Pipes makes her character really fun to watch.

And the reveal of the killer is just so over the top and ridiculous. I won't ruin it but, the destruction of planet Namek was basically the backdrop.

I know, no one is forcing these people to see these movies, but they gotta make their opinions valid and have someone here them complaining over it.

So they cant express their opinion? No one is forcing you to READ them. You can simply ignore them. But you dont. You're putting out the fire with gasoline.

(**** yes, i am listening to that now)

I've got zero expectations for this one. Sure, it's another remake on the Hollywood pile, but the trailer at least got my attention.

wont be watchin this......

this is one of those rainy day movies where you go to blockbuster and theres nothing else to rent.

BD Review: 'Sorority Row' is Well Played

Now in theaters everywhere is Summit's Sorority Row, a 90's throwback movie that BC really enjoyed. "I know this won’t be a favorite among anyone, because it’s so by the numbers, but dammit, I miss this sort of “nothing special” slasher movie. So many of them nowadays are fixed on gimmicks, or 3D, or trying to outdo one of the other films - it’s nice to see one that’s simply a traditional slasher movie. It even has a nonsensical sequel setup, another tradition that’s been somewhat phased out. Well played." Click the title for the full review or write your own review and tell all of BD what YOU thought.

When five sorority girls inadvertently cause the murder of one of their sisters in a prank gone wrong, they agree to keep the matter to themselves and never speak of it again, so they can get on with their lives. This proves easier said than done, when after graduation a mysterious killer goes after the five of them and anyone who knows their secret...

Review of The Film.
When Glen Morgan remade Black Christmas in 2006, he was burned at the stake. Bob Clark’s original is a classic, and it didn’t deserve to be part of the remake machine (I am curious how it would fare had it come along AFTER Rob Zombie’s Halloween). I, however, liked his film. It wasn’t better but any means, but I liked the approach: putting a bunch of cute girls in a house, deriving humor from the characters instead of referencing horror movies, and dishing up a lot of over-the-top and gory kills. Fine by me. Well, now we have Sorority Row, which takes the same approach, except the original House On Sorority Row isn’t quite as lauded as Christmas, so hopefully this time folks will go easy on it.

What I most appreciated was that it offers up traditional slasher fun without any of the excessive brutality that a lot of modern slasher films have. The kills are bloody, yes, but not viciously so. After seeing H2’s overkill (“Why stab someone once when you can stab them 34 times?” Rob Zombie seems to be thinking), it’s nice to see a simple impaling every now and then.

It’s also refreshingly fast-paced. The prank that sets up the I Know What You Did Last Summer-esque plot occurs in the first 5 minutes, with the slasher claiming his/her first kill a few scenes later. The original took FOREVER to get to this point, and there was a lot of dilly-dally after that (then again, it had a slightly more complicated plot). And at first I was afraid that the compact main cast (six girls) would mean a low body count, but it’s actually about double that.

I do have one major issue. My biggest problem with the original was that the killer had this really creepy Jester costume that you never saw until the end of the film. I was hoping that the remake would make up for this and put him in a few scenes at least. But no! The costume isn’t used at all, and worse - now it’s just a big hooded coat like in Urban Legend. I don’t know why so many modern slashers are so reluctant to even try to make an interesting, costume-worthy killer, but that seems to be the case. Then again, I guess it makes the occasional memorable killer (like Chromeskull from Laid To Rest, or Babyface from The Hills Run Red) look even more badass in comparison.

As for the surprising R rating (I thought for sure this would be a PG-13 deal), it’s well-earned, though if you’re hoping for lots of nudity you’re **** out of luck. None of the main girls disrobe, instead only a couple of the random house girls are seen topless. More importantly, some of the deaths are pretty splattery, and follow Happy Birthday To Me’s template of being somewhat goofy (there are at least two deaths via something being forced in someone’s mouth). And (and this is what really won me over), the girls swear like sailors. Hell, even Carrie Fisher has a potty mouth. But unlike Zombie’s Halloween, the girls (particularly Margo Harshman) sound natural when they swear, and don’t get excessive with it. Plus, some of them ARE *****es, so when one calls another a *****, it actually makes sense.

I know this won’t be a favorite among anyone, because it’s so by the numbers, but dammit, I miss this sort of “nothing special” slasher movie. So many of them nowadays are fixed on gimmicks, or 3D, or trying to outdo one of the other films - it’s nice to see one that’s simply a traditional slasher movie. It even has a nonsensical sequel setup, another tradition that’s been somewhat phased out. Well played.

Score: 7 / 10

7/10 that's what I just about expected it to be about.

It sounds like fun . I don't have high expectations but I liked the Scream movies and to a lesser extent I know what you did last summer.
