Ryan Reynolds has taken a leading role opposite Helen Mirren in The Weinstein Company's The Woman in Gold (previously The Golden Lady), an upcoming biopic of Maria Altmann. Deadline has the news, reporting that Daniel Bruhl (Rush, The Fifth Estate) is also negotiating for a part.

The Woman in Gold, scripted by Alexi Kay Campbell, details Altmann's (Mirren) real-life quest to recover from the Austrian government five pieces of Gustav Klimt artwork stolen from her family during World War II. Reynolds will play Altmann's lawyer with Bruhl targeting the role of an attorney on the opposite side of the case.

Simon Curtis, best known for helming My Week with Marilyn, is directing.

Potentially a bit of Oscar bait.

I just watched this movie and cried. Helen Mirren should have gotten an Oscar just for being able to pull off the Austrian accent.

Those flashback scenes were gut wrenching.
